Take a drink every time you hear "terra cotta" lol. All jokes aside, this is a great video and thank you for talking about the benefits of terra cotta pots before just jumping into everything! :D
Thanks for the advice! :3 -I can't help but wonder though; if you use this Rust-Oleum stuff to seal the inside of the pot, won't it leach into the soil over time and poison your plant? 🤔
That may be a minor risk over a very long period of time I suppose. I would definitely avoid bottom watering a plant in a sealed pot because that would allow water to flow freely in and out of the pot thus leaching things both directions, but if you top water I think it would be far less of a problem. In my case I only chose to seal the saucer that the pot sits on rather than the pot itself, and I rarely allow water to sit in the saucer as I empty it out right away. Personally, I think that would be the best practice. Thanks for the view and the feedback! 😊
@@MossAndMirth Thanks for your two cents! ☺️ -If you're interested, I recently discovered this stuff that people use to seal their aquariums/ fishtanks with, called 'Everflex Aqua Mate'? (In UK here) I've been using it for the insides and bottom of pots as a sealer. It's hard to spread evenly, but it's like this silicon gel that hardens and is watertight (not just water resistant), and doesn't disintegrate when submerged, and is also fish-safe (and presumably therefore plant-safe) once dry. Still practicing as it's a fiddly process, but it seems promising! 👌
Wow, that sounds very intriguing! I will be on the lookout for that or a similar product in the US. I could see myself using that for a terrarium in the future!! Thanks so much for the feedback! 😁
@MossAndMirth, I do bottom water my plants. And some plants are herbs, so I don't want anything leeching into the soil. What if I sealed the outside of the saucer instead?
I unfortunately did not wipe mine down prior to Glossing periodmy terracotta plant was outside for quite a long time and is a bit weatherworn. But it has pictures of things that my children had drawn on it so I wanted to presrve that and I sprayed from the can instead of using a brush. Its the same product that you're using. But As it dries It kind of has white spots in certain areas and I'm wondering if there's any way that I can fix that
Very informative much appreciated 👏🏽 If I want to paint a pot should I seal it first or paint then seal it ? Also should i apply the sealer over everything I paint or only the inside of the saucer?
Daneka, if you are painting the majority of the pot, I would recommend sealing afterward, but only to protect the paint. If you are only painting a small portion of the pot (for example, a tiny polka dot pattern) you may want to avoid sealing so the pot is still breathable. I would definitely recommend sealing the saucer regardless of what you decide to do to the pot. 😊
I want to seal my pots before I paint them with acrylic paint, any tips for non gloss? More of a matte? Should I seal them before or after I paint them, or both?
Hi I have very BIG terracotta pots with no glaze on them but I need to seal and paint them with water bast paint. Can you paint on top of this stuff. Please can you help 🙏 .
Interesting. Thanks Moss & Mirth for sharing this video about seal terracotta saucer, I have a question, after seal with that product from Rust-Oleum (really good), I bought the same, can I cover them with acrylic? the idea is to add color.
Where did you get the rustoleum clear sealer ? I found the big can on line for $38 , but couldn't find it at any hardware or home improvement store locally.
@@MossAndMirth I'm confused, you replied to Ceemarie Jaye that you thought it would work to paint the inside of the pot, but here you're saying it might infect the plant? I'm trying to figure out the same thing - I want to paint the inside of a pot but am wondering if it's toxic and might seep into the soil hurting the plant. If you're able to clarify I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks for the great video!
Why seal the terracotta if the advantage is it is breathable? Sealing will make it not breathable. If you’re painting the outside, you need to seal inside and out as overtime the paint will bubble up if the pot was only painted outside.
Thanks for this video. My final process is to whirl two coats on the finished pot. After I seal the bottom twice get in the weep hole.
Thank you 🙏
What about using elmers or tacky glue as coating before painting rather than using Rust-Oleum? Thank you

Lol, thank you Mortessa!
I didn't even know you could do this! Thank you
Great video! This was so helpful! I wanted to paint an acrylic design but didn’t know how to seal it from cracking over time.
This would be the perfect way to seal in acrylic paint! I have actually thought about trying that myself. Good luck to ya!
Where did you get the pot with the chevron design. It's beautiful!
Can this be used inside the planter?
Thanks for the advice! :3

is there any difference with the ultra cover 2x clear ( same stuff ) but spray ?
How would this work if you did this inside the entire terra cotta pot? Not just the saucer. Wanted some feedback before committing to the purchase.
I bet that could work!
Where do you get your clear coat?

Harry, I suspect that acrylic paint would perform just fine over this sealer, although I have not personally tried it. Best of luck to you!
@@MossAndMirth Yes, I also think that it will be fine, thanks for your help and great channel.
Can this prevent mold and mildew from forming on that flower pots? If not, can you suggest a paint to prevent mold and mildew? Thanks
This is the same issue I am having! Did you ever find a solution? I'm nervous about applying Rust-Oleum to the exterior of my pots!
@@Bailey_B I found a solution. I trashed them lol. The mold took over before I was able to find a solution. Best of luck.

If you're in the US it's at Home Depo.
Can you suggest a glaze for terracotta clay?
Can I use it for the inside of the pot?
You could run the risk of the lacquer infecting your plant, so I would probably avoid that. I think using it on the outside would be a safer bet!

I pant Tara cotta pot and seal with clear seller. Now I water paint come off help me.
Would you use the Rust-Oleum with herb pots?
I know your comment is old, but for anyone else wanting to know. No. not with anything you're going to eat.

What is your point after all? I have had the same thought as yours about the breath ability of terracotta.
You seal only the saucer not the pot itself. The plant would still "breathe".
What is this suppose to do?
Jannet, if you use terracotta saucers this will help prevent water from seeping through the terracotta and potentially damaging surfaces. 🙂
