Your video implies national debt as limited only to government's direct borrowings. Strictly this is incorrect: it should be direct and indirect borrowings. Indirect borrowings comprise the government's obligations and guarantees on behalf of state owned enterprises. Another important consideration, not discussed in the video, is the source of the borrowings : from inside or outside the country. Borrowings from outside the country tend to be riskier and involve capital outflows for interests and repayments. For example Malaysia, while its debt to GDP is higher, 95% of its borrowings are from inside the country.
you know there's thing where the bigger your nation, the more beneficial to borrow from outside because in the end it'll stream back liqudly back into your natjon, the example is china and US debt, chinese holds lots of US debt bonds. and the Chinese borrowing is not limited or intentionally limited to borrow domestically. malaysia and other smaller nation can't do that without risking outflow cuz their markets aren't big enough to flow it back naturally. so they gotta optimized which drives domestic money to be borrowed and instead make it harder for domestic people to borrow capital domestically or make it more lucrative to borrow internationally. and di ya know everysince the romans did what Malaysia as your example did. everytime there's a crisis the creditor lost money and government lost tax renue due to defaulting on their debts because of a regime change/the historical famines and barbarian invasions. and suddenly tasx income is cut inhalf. because the romans didn't borrow from the outside and when this happens trade flow OUT cuz capital that existed on thin air"debt" disappear inside the country en mass in short borrow from outside increase demand abroad, which increase domestic productivity since a big nation, your products aren't efficiently getting productivity if you focus on domestic demands while smaller nations use comparative advantage to take parts of your domestic market
you are correct of course. but in the case of indonesia, most external debts are made by government (60%) like sovereign bonds and multilateral loans and including SOE's debts. this is very different than during 97/98 crises when most debts were private sector debt. currently around 40-45% are private sector debt originated mostly from domestic loans. so this video is not (very) wrong given its focus on external debt.

Based on my perspective, there is a hypocrisy among Indonesians who fear debt but are rather comfortable with gambling (online/offline). I believe that the Indonesian government should educate its people about debt and its uses, both personally and nationally, so that if the Indonesian government decides to take on more debt for whatever reason in the future, people will not freak out and say that "ooh, the 1998 crisis traumatized us" is the only reason we should not take on debt for development. I mean, there's no harm in learning about something new right? Or maybe learning about something that has been considered "taboo" in the past or even present. Just so we could fathom it's true uses and best practices, especially binding it with the unique characteristics of us Indonesians, just so we could finally decide what's good and what's bad for us and for generations to come (counting out further changes and needs, for the sake of making it work right now). I'm open to discussion and would like to hear your thoughts (particularly from fellow Indonesians). God Bless, and have a great day.

I'm not surprised by this news since I always follow updates from our Finance Minister, Sri Mulyani (SMI), who I really admire. She's been doing a good job managing Indonesia's macroeconomics, especially during the global economic turmoil during and post-COVID. Our debt-to-GDP ratio is around 40%, which is still under control, considering the massive infrastructure development under Jokowi's administration. There's nothing wrong with debt if it's used for productive purposes. What worries me a lot is how easily some Indonesians get provoked by the opposition (or those who have own agenda or part of foreign proxy to prevent Indonesia become prospering), like when they claim our total debt is dangerously high. If these people don't like a leader for personal reasons or presumptive, they'll hate the leader no matter how well they're doing their job, like maintaining economic stability. Instead of offering constructive criticism, they resort to character assassination, hoping the leader will step down and get changed. This is really harmful to our country's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2045, which needs political stability.
You need to carefully analyze the last part of the video. Our current debt ratio is relatively small because some of the debt from government projects is paid by state-owned enterprises.

There are differences in recording procedures in Indonesia's accounting system with the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia. The Indonesian government does not record the debts of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in the financial books of state debt. Whereas countries such as Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand record all debts of state-owned enterprises in the state financial accounting. Even Malaysia records the debts of companies engaged in strategic sectors such as energy and infrastructure into state debt. If Indonesia includes SOE debt into state accounting, then Indonesia's debt has touched 100% of GDP.
BS, I am Indonesian and we have been got many unofficial foreign debts those were unwritten on National Budget. Those debts are caused by bad governence and corruption at anywhere here.
Jokowi administration is no brainer in terms of unnescessary spending. Building infrastructures is a good thing, but the placement and realization of the budgeting and building are misplacement more than half of it. Luckilly, Indonesia has the genius Mama Queen Sri Mulyani who kept things in checked. In the middle of buying powers decremental, Jokowi insisted wanting to build his own temple, (I mean city, Jokowipolis/Jokowisburg/Jokowigrad). If your policies are mostly populist, it's definitely no brainer spending. Politican tends to do populist policies for electoral purposes, but a true Stateman tends to do strategic policies. Thank God for sending the Great Sri Mulyani among us Indonesian.
Me personally ok with debt, but not ok with the 'conditions' imposed by the debt. Any other big country can make any debt they want and stay on their agenda. Indonesia didn't have that leeway.

And what use is that surplus? A government is not a business. A business is run to make a profit. A government instead must be run to service their people. If there is a surplus, might as well spend that surplus to fix roads (infrastructure spending) or pay teachers more (education spendng) or give more medical equipment to puskesmas (healthcare spending).
@striker7469 Point, but why do we need to generate a surplus first if we are going to spend it anyway? It doesn't make sense to adjust the budget so there is a billion dollar surplus, hold it until the next year, and only then spend it. Just pay the teachers more immediately (or something similar). Anyway, my position on national debt is more relaxed. The deficit, which has to be covered with debt, should be low enough percentage-wise that the GDP growth is bigger than the deficit. If that is maintained then there is no problem paying the debt.
@@striker7469 Point. My mistake. However, why do we have to make a surplus first if we are going to spend it anyway? It doesn't make sense to adjust the budget so that there is a billion dollar of surplus, and then wait until the next year, and only then spend it. If there is going to be a billion dollar budget surplus, we might as well pay the teachers more right away rather than make them wait a whole year. Anyway, my own position is that a no-debt policy is unnecessary and a waste of time for a developing country. What's important is making sure that the deficit, which will have to be covered by borrowing money, is lower percentage wise than the growth of GDP. This ensures that debt will always remain small proportionally even if the number grows bigger. If you owe the bank a hundred million and you make ten million a month, that's hard. But if you owe the bank two hundred million but you make forty million a month, then even though the debt is twice as large, but it's actually easeri to pay. So if the country has a 1.95% deficit but the economy grows by 4%, then proportionally it's smaller.
@tonychen76 I still discourage countries making debt. Please spend on what your earned for that year only. Be prudent. Running the country yearly cost must not exceed 1/3 of of your gdp that year. Another 1/3 goes to development like salary increase, infrastructure or cash hand-out to the most poor. The final 1/3 is your yearly saving in case of any disaster like war or pandemic. Fight the corruption everyday. Stop wasting money on anything unnecessary like sports events if your country have a better things to pay. Stop the general subsidi. Go green in energy production. Stop paying pension for the new generation. Instead pay them more to cut more for their retirement and medical insurance. That would save every country and its youngs generation. 😏😏
People are being fallacious when valid concerns such as corruption levels are raised. Yes, Indonesia's debt is low which is not bad, and yes, corruption levels are high, which is bad. Ratio debt to gdp is low, but interest rate in Indonesia is quite high. So it’s not wise to cap the debt ratio. But Don’t worry the debt ratio will increase due to deficits
For some Indonesians, the topic of the proportion of national debt is a sensitive matter. The bitter experience of experiencing two major crises in 1960 which experienced inflation of 600% and the 1998 crisis was a major blow to the economy which left Indonesian society a little traumatized. So the Indonesian government made state regulations and drafted a law that the proportion of state debt should not exceed state income. Of course this prevents our country from falling into a third financial crisis.
Wow, this video explains it way better than the entire government press release 😅. I just found out today that loans taken by state-owned enterprises aren't included in our country's debt.
The reason is the fragility of the national currency, Rupiah. It is prone to external shock, US dollar fluctuation. To prevent it, the level of debt must be low. Furthemore, the country's democracy and political stability is still under consolidation. So, the government could not spend money or budget for development massively.
Regarding corporate debt, so does China. The bullish of property sector in China is funded by global debt. What I am trying to say is that, fiscal dicipline and political stability keep the debt low, that might stand a chance to the business cycle.
Yeah. But the culture now shifted to how to make people pay credit loan instead. It's a debt and it's double the amount but it's not getting accounted for because it counts as credit.
There is debt called good one and bad ones. If you have low debt but all is bad, that is bad for your country. USA have the most debt but their economy having a blast.
You don't know how good indonesian officials making economic reports. Statistically, it's probably on the low end, but it doesn't mean anything to the actual Indonesian citizen. They suffers A LOT on their financial s.
In a nutshell, it is possible that Indonesia should actually have a surplus of budget more than 20% as the spending and projects are regularly corrupted and marked up by 20% - 30%.
For example Malaysia, while its debt to GDP is higher, 95% of its borrowings are from inside the country.
you know there's thing where the bigger your nation, the more beneficial to borrow from outside because in the end it'll stream back liqudly back into your natjon, the example is china and US debt, chinese holds lots of US debt bonds. and the Chinese borrowing is not limited or intentionally limited to borrow domestically. malaysia and other smaller nation can't do that without risking outflow cuz their markets aren't big enough to flow it back naturally. so they gotta optimized which drives domestic money to be borrowed and instead make it harder for domestic people to borrow capital domestically or make it more lucrative to borrow internationally. and di ya know everysince the romans did what Malaysia as your example did. everytime there's a crisis the creditor lost money and government lost tax renue due to defaulting on their debts because of a regime change/the historical famines and barbarian invasions. and suddenly tasx income is cut inhalf. because the romans didn't borrow from the outside and when this happens trade flow OUT cuz capital that existed on thin air"debt" disappear inside the country en mass
in short borrow from outside increase demand abroad, which increase domestic productivity since a big nation, your products aren't efficiently getting productivity if you focus on domestic demands while smaller nations use comparative advantage to take parts of your domestic market
you are correct of course. but in the case of indonesia, most external debts are made by government (60%) like sovereign bonds and multilateral loans and including SOE's debts. this is very different than during 97/98 crises when most debts were private sector debt. currently around 40-45% are private sector debt originated mostly from domestic loans.
so this video is not (very) wrong given its focus on external debt.
Don't worry. Indonesia source of debt also majority come from internal debt.
The debt again depends on creditor & international credit rating whether they trusted you're capable of servicing the loans....

Katanya
Bukan Hutang negara yg menghancurkan Indonesia nanti...terapi masyarakat nya sendiri.

Indonesia is a cultural and societal powerhouse. They've always been, and they continue to be.
100%? What a hoax 😂 Indonesia SOEs not more bigger compare to economy. If included the rate still below debt of Malaysia and those other countries
100%? Crazy 😂

So low, yet still used as political weapon to offend opposition
Debt will only reduced country to spend on infrastructure or basic salary increase. No debt just surplus only policy. 😑😑
@tonychen76 Read my comment again. I have mention the surplus for. 😑😑
And yes, other countries have corruption too, which is bad, but that doesn't make moderate corruption levels okay and it still should be reduced.
Really? Many local news still says we have a lot debt

2. rise the salary so it looks like the you could get tax from more people

and the result from his 10 years era:
1. becaused of rising salary 250%, manufacturing company start to fall one by one, this made many worker being no job then they do small entrepreneur with smaller income then when they are working at company.
2. with the company falling, manufacturing index is fall a lot
3. indonesia lost 10 million middle class people, all the people income based on their class is falling
4. buying power is falling to the lowest level since 1998
5. with infrastructure build without compare it to the economic return, we have hugeeee debt now, and with falling government income,
6. tax collecting index become smaller and smaller with the years go on, beco many people couldn't pay the tax anymore, their income fall behind free tax income rules
7. indonesia face large china citizen that comes to indonesia, and did illegal importing and they sell it online with indonesia citizen identity, this makes a lot of CAPITAL OUTFLOW

Furthemore, the country's democracy and political stability is still under consolidation. So, the government could not spend money or budget for development massively.
