- As you raise up a new generation of chickens it can be a challenge to get them integrated into an existing flock. Adult hens can bully younger ones and if you have roosters they will establish a pecking order. Here are a few tips on getting your younger birds safely into your older flock.

We have 4 Red Stars and 2 Black Stars in separate coops. People tell me to just put them together and let them learn to get along, but I've seen how vicious the Reds are; they brutally attacked their sister after she fought with a fox and escaped alive but injured. This hen was amazing; drew the fox off from the rest of the flock. This is how they show their thanks. We had to keep this one in her own coop (amazingly she laid an egg every day, starting the day after the attack). I just don't even want to try putting the Black Stars together with these aggressive Reds. I know I should, and let them establish an order, but I just know the Reds will beat them up, maybe even kill them. These are very aggressive birds. Anyway since the Black Stars give us eggs every day and are happy enough, I'm keeping them apart.
We have 15 golden red hens. They are a hybrid of Rhode Island Red female and Leghorn male. The hens are a lovely golden rusty blend and the roosters are white. They are hardy as well as friendly and quite talkative and curious! They give us 13 -15 eggs a day, even through the winter. A wonderful flock!

We got 10 chicks last March. 3 hens and 7 roosters!!!We kept 5 older hens and added the 3 young ones. Kept 1 rooster and put the other 6 in jars. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect.
We have had a few breeds of chickens. Buckeyes have been worked the best for us in our area and in the way we use them.
I feel your pain on trying to get the new chickens into the coop. I have Rhode Island reds and the new ones always find the same tree branch to roost on every year. They are mean I lost two chickens in 2022 because I introduced the young ones to early. I learned the second year. I have two coops right next to each other that is separated by a gate. When the new ones get big enough i open the gate. It takes a couple of days for everyone to get used to each other.
Brahmas are such a good cold hearty breed. We have a few, and they’re so gentle too, in my short 8 years experience with chickens of many breeds.
Personal opinion….i have separate little coop/run for new members to be introduced. Put them in there first a few days, let them get introduced to each other. I have found it to be a better method than “in the dark” idea. Again, just my opinion.

We have 5 buff orphantons, one is a rooster, 2 golden comets, and 2 Americanas. The comets are jerks but the others are very friendly and easy going.
Everyone has their own style but my method is to "home" the new chickens in the coop for about a week, separating the coop with wire. This also allows the new and older chickens to get used to each other. At the end of homing I take the food and water out and remove the wire. The newbies go out seeking food/water. If I see aggression towards the newbies while homing I put the new chickens in a separate closed off area of the run during day and more slowly integrate. But this rarely happens. Usually done in two weeks. Newbies start going in at night usually on day one after homing. It is established in their head as safe space from homing.

Brahmas have been the healthiest bird I have had...but I love to cross them. Working on a cross with a Brahma base. I am curious about why you leave your coop light on at night?
