Years ago, I bought this old bait caster at a yard sale for $10 which turned out to be a 510 Phlueger mounted on a Shakespeare 5'6" wonder rod. I've spent the last 2 days cleaning it out, they sure liked using this old black grease. After cleaning it out with Q-Tip and alcohol, I replace it with dielectric grease and silicone spray. It cast great and now I know what knuckle buster means! I'm sure I'll be catching fish on it.
I'm sure you will too! That sounds like a great set up. Best wishes for great fishing with the rod and reel and thanks for giving it a 2nd Chance! Dennis
Dennis you're the Bob Ross of reel repair. Your videos are not only great for diy but your voice and teaching methods are relaxing. Big Thanks from oklahoma
Good demo. Two grandsons are just starting fishing and will be watching this video soon. I wish they were closer to me so the fishing lessons could be in person but they're learning a lot on UA-cam University.
Thanks Dennis, I found a Pflueger 2600 at Goodwill for five bucks the other day and about dropped when I found out how uncommon they are. I opened it up to service it and it is a carbon copy of the early Ambassadeur 5000 reels. I have a few " knucklebusters" that I'm starting to use more when I get out fishing. You have to appreciate the simplicity and quality of these older reels. Thanks again!
I've only just realised I have this model reel among my collection of Pfleugers and I couldn't understand the "free " spool switch until your video. I never used the reel assuming that the handle would remain stationary as on the majority of Penn multipliers : how rronngg I was! I thought the reel wasn't working because the handle still revolved. So thank you so much for explaining its functions to me : you've been a great help and I'm subscribing just to see other reels of this ilk as I think the engineering on them is first class.
If you push the star adjuster center button in, the handle will not spin backwards during casting. I left it engaged to explain the typical knuckleduster reel. but yours has this override feature - Thanks - Dennis
I was so glad to see this video Dennis. I have been wanting to share with you and your viewers about my Shakespeare model 1920 Reel made in 1946 that you serviced for me . I took it fishing and tried casting with it . I could not believe how well I was able to cast my lure but you got to watch out for that handle spinning around as fast as the spool was turning . It was really a pleasure fishing with it .
Dennis, I'm very hesitant to correct you on anything having to do with reels, but are you aware that the black button in the middle of the handle is the free spool release for that reel. I believe that model was made for several years in the 1970s as competition for the Abu 5000. Obviously, it failed in that regard. It was a decent reel and I have several. I love your channel and you have taught me a lot. Thanks, Jack.
Don't be hesitant Jack. I am aware of the release button. I wanted to make a point on the back spinning handle on a lot of the traditional bait casters, so I left it engaged. I should have mentioned the over-ride on this reel, but I was trying to answer a viewer's question on how to cast one and their model was a South Bend reel without the free spool release. I didn't have his model, so I grabbed this one and tried to replicate what he would be doing. I love this Pflueger reel and fish with it frequently and yes, the free spool release makes it much easier to cast. Thanks for watching and for the comment Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle I used my Supreme 510 for the better part of a summer in knucklebuster mode. When I realized that the black button on the crank hub was the freespool release it surely made my casting easier. It made using this reel much more pleasurable.
Hey there Dennis,.. I was fortunate to learn on these reels when I was a child and were passed on to me but have since been stolen years ago but making way in replacing all that was stolen.... all the Abu's replaced are vintage, tuned and unused... my latest reel I acquired is in fact a Pfluger Supreme push button without the big knob on left side .... Its beautiful and unused,.. one thing I've noticed about the Supreme ,... it holds a butt load line,.. way more line than any bass baitcaster would ever need... lol 🤣
Reels create memories and it is unfortunate that you had yours stolen. At least you can re-live the memories with the addition of replacements to your collection. Best wishes - Dennis
Grate video, i just pick one of these up to ad to my phluger reels. I just put some line on it ready to get a bass on this reel. Thanks for the video, which helps me a lot.
Thanks for the Lesson. Remember, The more you cast the better you get, That is why I use an Spinning Reel. However, I have aquired some narrow spool reels so I can use them for shore fishing.
Great video Dennis, I try to watch every video you make. It would be great if you would make more casting videos of even some older reels like the Pflueger TRUMP or Summit , some of these smaller sized reels I believe are quite challenging because of there smaller size. Keep up the Great work that you do on this videos
I will see what I can do. So much of the older reels is the ability to match the reel to the rod to maximize casting. Mismatches make it very difficult to cast to accuracy or distance
i grabbed a couple of those kind of reels, mainly for learning to repair, and i tried to use one and did not know what i was doing i have only every used spinning reels in my life will have to try this again with this info
Wow! I wish I'd known that sooner! Thanks for the tip. I never thought of pushing that center button. That makes it so much easier to cast. I'll definitely be using this reel more knowing that new bit of information. Thanks again!
That’s so helpful Dennis. I want to find a real like that at a flea market or something and try myself. Is that the normal way with no anti reverse and the handle spinning when it’s casting out? Is that typical?
when's the fish fry? I could smell the salt water just watching, it's one of the few things I miss about living on the Gulf Coast of Florida, The better fishing is on the east coast, but I never fished the Atlantic. I'm going to fix that this fall or next spring. great video, thanks for the tutorial

You can do it! Practice is key and then it is just muscle memory AKA the smart thumb! Dennis
Wow, that reel is a beauty, i love the old Pflueger reels.
Me too! Thanks
Impressive Dennis. Love vintage reels. Great video......

Cool reel 👍
Wow Mr Dennis, Walter here in Canada, nice to see you in action...
I do go fishing! I just don't do videos on that. There are a lot of folks that are much better at those videos than I am - Thanks

Dennis try pushing in the black button between the reel handles , no knuckle busting. I found this out totally on accident.

Love finding some new on a item I’ve had for years
That’s so helpful Dennis. I want to find a real like that at a flea market or something and try myself. Is that the normal way with no anti reverse and the handle spinning when it’s casting out? Is that typical?
That is normal for the older reels - Dennis
Dam nice rod was gonna get one but not for 3-400 new gonna buy used
I know - the new pricing is getting out of control. I bought this one used, just like you plan to do. Thanks
Many of the old knuckle busters would not handle line that thin as it would get stuck between the spool and frame
That is true. The older Dacron lines were the approximate size of mono, so they did not trap as easily as the thinner braids today
What is the switch on the bottom of the crank side on these reels for? I just got one off ebay and I can't see that it does anything
I will need to find one to confirm. It may be the click mechanism.
