  • These are instructions on how to remove the cooling fan assembly on 2006 Mazda 6. Also the same on 2005 models.
NOTE: at 5:05min into the video I mention taking the power steering unit hose off. I discovered you do NOT need to do this. Just pull the unit up out of the way and tie it off.

To put back in start on your right put straight in 90 degree then with your left start picking it up and down with your right wiggle it in there we did it😏 LORD I LOVE YOU FOREVER AND I THANK YOU FOREVER WITHOUT YOU THIS WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE

All the fan control modules on the 2003-2008 Mazda 6 cars are external on the fan shroud. At 14:34 you can see the module in the upper right hand corner with two electrical plugs attached. The module can replaced in the engine bay. If you fans are not working well or continue to run excessively after turning the engine off this is likely the problem.
If you own the second generation Mazda 6 with the same symptoms the fan control module is inside the fan assembly and typically replaced as an entire unit. It is possible to dissemble and replace only the module but it is more involved.

Hi David, When is it necessary to replace a cooling fan assembly? My Mazda 6 2010 fan continues to run after the car is turned off which in turn killed me battery. This has happened twice. Can I just replace the radiator fan control module or will the entire fan assembly need to be replaced even though the fan works? Or you can't just buy the one part?

You can try and just replace the cooling fan control module. I give instructions in this video: ua-cam.com/video/ScpAQqMDgQU/v-deo.html
but chances are high that the fan control module is NOT the root cause and therefore the problem will return in a short while. You might find a inexpensive ($20) module online from ebay, but make sure it is compatible with 2010 model car. Your car is 8 years old so it could be the fan unit that is worn out and drawing more current than it should, which caused the control module to burn out. However, it also could be a faulty temperature sensor that is tricking the control module into "thinking" the car is still hot and then keeps the fans running. I suggest you troubleshoot the heat sensors (there are two) first to ensure one of them is not the problem. as a workaround, if you don't live in a really hot area, you can remove the fuse that powers the fans. this will keep the fans from coming on at all. It is located in the fuse box under the hood near the battery. I don't really recommend this long term, but if you get stuck some place you could do this in a pinch. Lastly, if this behavior is intermittent, meaning the fans stay on once in awhile, but not every single time you turn the car off, then it would for sure point to a flaky temp sensor. Unfortunately there are a lot of variables in today's cars. Sorry I can't point you to the exact problem. good luck.

I forgot to ask you if the fans run all the time while the car is on? Even when the engine is cold? Or only once it gets hot? Because if they don't come on when the engine is cold then that means the temp sensor is probably working correctly.

David thank you for your prompt reply, you've given me heaps of information and I'll have to research and do all of those things you've suggested before sending it to a mechanic. In response to your last question, the fans unfortunately are on all time. And I live in a hot climate. Thank you again.

If you just pull the engine it's a lot easier, but you have to drop the transmission first.

Check your fuses and the fan relay, they may be the issue. then check the electrical connections to the controller, they might be loose. Lastly, you can check your temp thermometer (sensor), it might be defective, and thinks the engine is cooler than it really is. Good luck!
