What is the difference between a yukata and a gi?
One if my friend said that it would be considered impolite to wear a yukata with a hakama. He described it as wearing a pyjama with tuxedo pants.

A gi ends just below, or on, the hips while a kimono goes to the floor. It would be more like wearing pants with a dress to wear hakama with a yukata, which has been done but rarely considered fashionable. Historically and still, yukatas were worn as pyjamas or dressing gowns so that would be his point there. Usually with a kimono style print and obi a yukata becomes festival clothing.

Are kimono and yukata made the same way? The difference is the fabric?

Yukata are basically made the same way as a kimono. The basic pattern is more or less the same.
The difference is the fabric and the lining. Yukata are usually made of a sturdy fabric, and they have no lining.
Kimonos, on the other hand, are made of an more elegant looking fabric. They are usually lined. For the hot summer season, there are also unlined kimonos to cope with the heat.
