honestly, you are the humblest pianist and piano tutor I've ever seen. I have been following you for a while and after 20 years of discouragement and resentment I have started to play the piano again and realised that a kind, honest and humble teacher like you would change a student's perspective of studying the piano. Thank you ! :)

Josh you are a true inspiration to me, both your teaching and your humble and sweet character, you are the one and only reason I do what I do now and I basically owe you everything that happened to me during these couple of years.

Majority of things we wish we never count up the costs ! Would you be ready as a kid to practice at least 2 hours a day and by the time you were 12 you were studying 4-6 hours a day. By the time you were a teenager , you would be practicing 8 hours a day! I had a similar path and I tell you is demands a lot of sacrifice ! Usually if you do not know about classical , you have no idea how difficult , challenging , that is! Listen attentively to A pianist called Kissin playing Chopin ‘s ballades , Etudes , Liszt’s transcendental Etudes ... listen and you will have a clearer understanding!

What got me into piano was when my dad bought an 88 key piano online (A really good quality keyboard), and after that I was immediately hooked and played about 4 hours that night. :) 7 months later I'm still hooked to the piano and I love piano so much, idk what I would do without music.

    • @joshwrightpiano
      @joshwrightpiano  6 років тому +47

Hi Jordan - it was all teaching, accompanying, and a bit of performing/recording (these last two brought in the least amount of money, but still supplemented a bit). I've always told my students that if they're good sight-readers, they will never have to flip burgers haha. If you're a good accompanist and can sight-read quickly and are easy to work with, you will be in very high demand as an accompanist. I've always liked teaching more, so I don't accompany anymore unless it's a family member or a colleague, but it was a lot of fun when I was at the universities accompanying other instrumentalists and vocalists.

I think it's massively important to stress that practice time follows a learning curve as any other human skill. More than 6 hours per day is beneficial as long as they're not done uninterrupted. 3 sessions of 2 hours with sufficient rest.

I don't know if I am glad now to hear that all pianists are that good because they PRACTISE really hard and not only because it's "in their blood". Or if I am sad because I never can catch up 35 years :( I wasn't allowed to learn piano as a child (too expensive...), struggled through flute and guitar (instruments I never really got a sense for, with teachers that couldn't teach me to understand and like music theory) and then I forgot about how lovely it would be to play an instrument I really love until the age of 39. Now I've been learning for 3,5 years, looking for every music theory video and tutorial I can find, diligently practising 2 hrs a day and seeing some progress, but it feels so slow. Especially sight reading doesn't really get better... if I'd just learned that as a child, it'd be sooo much easier.

So often we hear "oh so and so is so 'gifted' at music" as if the fairy godmother waved her wand over someone's cot and magically bestowed upon them 'the gift of music'. But no! What Josh, you make clear here is that it's not a gift, it's a GRAFT! a hard graft... years of practice and application. If there's any gift at all it's the gift of patience and persistence and concentration, and the ability to derive pleasure from the hours of repetition that it takes to grow those neurones and develop the skills and learn the language that is music.
No doubt if I'd spent as many hours studying stock market trading as I have learning music I would be a much wealthier man... well, financially at least.... 🤔

Hi Joseph Cassano, I'm not Josh Wright but I am also in high school and hoping to further pursue piano in college. Unless you are a prodigy who has practiced 10 hours a day since six years old (no offense if you are) or you have a millionaire benefactor/benefactress who can fund your freelance career (no offense if you do), attending a university will provide more opportunities for careers and neat experiences. The most important thing for any musician hoping to attend college is the professor. One of my friends who just graduated with his Bachelor's in Piano Performance told me that when you're looking at universities, you need to love the professor, because if you attend that university, you will spend several years soaking up their lifetime's worth of wisdom.
Of course, you are the only one who decides what you want to do with your life, and you will know if you want to pursue Piano instead of Business or Engineering or Foreign Languages etc. If you're serious about Piano, research colleges, take a private lesson (or two) with several professors (most offer one free private lesson), narrow down your list of colleges to apply to, and complete the audition process. Best wishes!

guillaume fauconnier Thanks Guillaume! At this point it’s all about what needs the most work (I have made a video about how to divide up your practice time that you can check out). But for students, I generally would suggest 20-30 mins dedicated technique, 15-30 mins sightreading according to their individual needs, then the rest of time on repertoire, generally not exceeding 1-2 hours in a day on any one section or piece.

Do you have any videos going over what you would practice in those daily hours? I usually feel like I get stumped on how to stay creative with practice unless I'm just doing stuff like improvising and I can get demotivated from the lack of stimulation in that regard, if I'm just doing rote technique without doing it in a creative or expressive way. This usually makes me end up practicing a lot less after a burnout from all that "hard line in the sand" style of practice.

Poor Cleveland, nobody wants to live there. Even Babayan, who was adopted by Cleveland like an adorable starving puppy, has moved to New York. Cleveland's my hometown and I was at the Casadesus competition that Babayan won (audience member). 1989 I think. Gaby Casadesus was still alive and there. Babayan was truly awesome and a spot in his studio would have been a good reason to move to Cleveland. But Ann Arbor's a great place and Michigan a great school.
Anyways, I enjoyed hearing about your background, didn't know you were from Utah. Which I don't blame you for coming back to. I currently live in Oregon and am just besotted with the West.

It is debateable whether practising for 8-9 hours a day will accomplish what they pianists concerned believe. After 4 hours there is so much lactic acid build-up in your muscles, that they can't perform very well at all and you will in fact not learn when you hoped for, unless you take at least a 2.5 hour break. I write this as an Accelerated Learning Trainer of 11 years experience, but I've also seen a prof from Julliard say this. Also, trying to learn anything new after 7pm is not a good idea - your brain is getting ready for sleep then, so all you will be doing is seting up a mental battle in your body, which is entirely counter-productive. It takes 2 hours to learn something new after 7pm, compared with 15 minutes beforehand. The time after 7pm should be used for reading music only, and this should be specifically for revision purposes ONLY. You want to be as tired as possible when you read the music, so it passes as in a blur. This means your conscious mind will not be reasiing any objections, and that is what you want because then you will know it wll be passing wordlessly into your unconscious mind, and that is the most powerful part of your brain. You can learn as much from visualising as you can from practising. The same slow and fast-twitch muscles fibres work in your body when you visualise as do when you are actually playing. Schabel hated practising. He used to do visualising to get round it. In this way he got away with two hours per day..... And I have tested this with myself and others. Using the visualisation technique I mention, you can get someone who is struggling with a passage to play it flawlessly very early on, during their practice time, if not first time round. It cuts hours off the work you have to do! It's a no brainer!

When you are 2 or 3 your brain is quite plastic and you learn very quickly. That declines rapidly and by 5 or 6 you are probably too old. After age 6 unless you are a Mozart type prodigy, expect to practice 4 hours a day for a decade or two before entering international piano competitions. Most people wildly underestimate how good concert pianists really are.

45 min daily at 4 years old, 2.5 hours at teen level, simultaneous bachelors/masters degree, constant recitals…doesn’t seem too hard

I told my son if he was very focused in his practice time; and If he met his teachers goals, he could stop practice for that day. He averages about 4 hours a day. I wanted him to have a life away from the piano as well. You only have 1 childhood.

Piano becomes boring if you don't challenge yourself. In theory, I am at level 5, yet all the songs I play are level 7 or above (Arizona Study Program level scale). Now even after a month or so I cannot play them near perfect, but they're challenging enough that I want to become better to play them, so I put time and effort into doing that. I don't do 3-4 hours, usually 1-2, but i've still made great progress in the 5-6 years i've played piano. Piano also might just not be for you, considering you said you get bored after 10 minutes.
