- In this video, I go over my physical network engineering lab that was formed over the 4 years I've been in networking. Its a mixed bag of Cisco and Fortinet gear.

Nice setup! Hey, just wanted to let you know that with the gear that you buy on ebay it may not be properly scrubbed before it's sold. I would suggest looking over any leftover data to find where it came from and contact that company. I wound up getting a Cisco ASA 5520 that wasn't scrubbed from a bank, VPN login info for multiple users, full network info, and security settings left on it. Luckily, I was able to contact their IT department to let them know they need to mind their data scrubbing while decommissioning assets. Just another way to develop new contacts in the industry if you run into something like that in the future.
If he's smart enough to do all this and know what he's talking about, it makes sense that he would know to do all that as well.
@@chrisbullock6477 Fair, but his viewers may not. I have met people that have confused ICMP for ICAP when asked a baited question posed by a client, "What port does ICMP use?", so... this world is full of people that may not know...

Its a legal liability for you to contact the previous owners. A far better process (IMO) is to scrub the gear and not tell anyone. But hey, you do you.

Love seeing people putting in work. This is such a grey area in 2024. I tend to tell people to avoid physical gear these days and go straight virtual. but it is nice for some people to be able to touch things
virtual is cool, but nothing takes the place of equipment or the touch feel of it.

Yeah, everyone recommends just using virtual, but honestly, I kind of want to set up my own rack for fun. Especially cuz my network supervisor doesn't really want me messing with anything at work since I'm less than a year in.
I wanna try to get my own setup going at home without upsetting the in-laws too much 😂😂

Back when I did my MCSA courses, we learned about Networks running on Novell Netware. Things have changed so much 20 years later! I feel like I should to get back into this networking stuff. Awesome set up btw.

I use to have a rack and a lab like this. I had to stop because my electric bill was getting outrageous. I only have 1 Cisco switch and a MikroTik 10G switch with a few Mini-PC's. Good luck Mr. Bunny 🙂Nice video!

Ive developed networking architectures for fairly large deployments and somehow this guy has more gear than a city's utility infrastructure.
good job i have alot of those switches i have 2 fortigate firewalls but i am running the Ubiquiti UDM-PRO for my gateway a Ubiquiti 16 lite and 8 lite and U6-Mesh AP and a UP-HD-PR AP

Man, dope video bruh and crazy setup. I always felt for the Network Engineers at my current job because it seems like it's ALWAYS something going wrong for them. I was like, I ain't NEVA gonna mess with Networking like that because I know them people be stressed. lol. On the flip side, you still need to know your fair share of network knowledge as an I.T Pro, no matter what you may specialize in. I didn't know a home lab could be that affordable if you know the right people at your job and you just search on Ebay and even marketplace. Definitely need to sharpen my knowledge on networks a lot more after watching your video. Keep it up man.
Appreciate that bro. Yeah man, the equipment can be very affordable on eBay and the right amount of research on what you need. Also, so many sleep in these companies decommissioning old network gear, you can get a lot of stuff for free grabbing gear off of jobs.
@@DataBunny Word. I know equipment is often decommissioned where I work at. The thing is I currently work remotely, so I don't really get dibs or offered anything Lol. I'll check out my next position and see what I can get my hands on.

Great equipment and awesome rack! No way my wife would let me get a full sized rack in the place. Getting a 12U rack was hard enough. You have so many options there!

Have you ever been on the field? With your understanding with those complex set ups, people like yourself are very rare. I've maintained a data center in a warehouse which I can't name. But my job was to basically keep the network up. Too bad the pay wasn't great, but at least you won't be on the floor working in harsh conditions lol. Anyway, I left the field 2 years ago to become a software engineer. But yeah,you're lucky to even get those because they're super expensive. Just make sure to have some backups because those cisco types are known to failed.
Thanks for watching. Yes I have been on the field, but it was mostly as a network technician. Most of the times, I would go into Cisco 9300 switches to make certain configurations on them. I’ve racked and stacked and also worked in closets, even did my own brand new closet.
Nice setup. Doing it right too by having your home network separate to your lab, that way you won’t get annoyed if when you go to watch a You Tube video you discover a network issue lol. It’s crazy how cheap this kit is after a few years, or even free as it was heading to the electronic waste trash.
Nice set-up. Try getting SNMP running. Monitor all that great hardware. Great net diagrams.

Very impressive lab, I don't know why as a windows and cloud Admin I feel kinda inadequate without core networking skills. I have a homelab that runs proxmox nodes with a couple of windows and Linux vms running. Am hoping to incooperate some networking equipment as a learning project what would you recommend I start with and what are some cheap switches and routers I can start out with and things to look out for.

You can take 2 cisco console cables, an ethernet coupler to get DB9-rollover-coupler-rollover-DB9 connection to plug it into your USB DB9 adapter. Nice and long too 😅
This is really cool to see. I've been working help desk for 3 years and looking to start CCNA. What do you recommend for a home lab setup? Others have mentioned that packet tracer, EVE-NG or Cisco Modelling Labs are enough.
I use GNS3 and the physical home lab.

The 70F I got for free after getting certified for the job. Fortinet sent me a free one. The 60D I got off eBay for cheap. Think it was like, $40ish. Can’t remember the other ones. But everything was off eBay.

I feel that they are cool. I deployed them years ago in a small private school. That’s another route I could take. Add a unifi controller and APs to the network and call it a day, but I have the Fortigate already here 😆

Im an I.T noob why would someone want their own network lab? Just curious i wouldnt want to get into a new hobby without knowing why lolz
Because it’s fun! lol but no seriously, it really helps with your understanding on building an actual network without having to worry about real production or taking down a multi-million dollar company. You can test and do everything on your own live network. Plus, you can learn a lot of stuff and can actually build a real, working network.
A homelab is essential if you are into this business.....simulating all these routing and switching protocols will enhance your troubleshooting skills...that's my advice for noobs...
