Mao may be a fantastic pianist and musician but not for this music ... or was it a bad evening ? It would be rude and pointless to make any comparisons ... i guess Mao senses it himself ... Please excuse me for this comment, but i just listened to his performance of the Mozart 24 in Zuhai and feel that this time Liszt was neither free nor wild enough.

I guess just that it was not the best of his evenings ... i have listened to him play the Dante Sonata (here on UA-cam) and it was just mind blowing. I have much respect for Mao, I don't talk out of contempt :)
He was probably missing the orchestra. He has been working with the Virtuoso Youth Orchestra in April prior to the Competition and it was much more impressive. In July, he was still 16. His birthday is at the end of November. ua-cam.com/video/gVFrzWBWMlA/v-deo.html
What makes an interpretation mature? Age? Or the quality. Yes, there are sections that are not well done because he is too young, but I think the performance is mature for his age.
