Traditional Style Winter Squash Garden

If you love winter squash and have the space for it, a traditional style squash garden will help you grow big, beautiful, and bountiful pumpkins (Cucurbita pepo) and winter squash (C. maxima and C. moschata).
A traditional squash garden is a large flat patch of ground which has been tilled and enriched with organic fertiliser to aid the plants' vigorous growth and production of fruits during the summer. I add a layer of agricultural cloth to suppress the growth of invasive plants around the squash. This cloth helps keep the fruits clean during their maturation compared to rest on bare soil and helps retain moisture in the soil during the hot summer months.
Although growing winter squash in containers is feasible, I have noticed that the plants will produce more fruits if grown in a traditional squash garden.

We use it to make pumpkin pie as well as savoury dishes like soup, stews, stuffed squash, roasted squash slices, and more.
