    Nice device, I really like the cable detection idea. Imagine if the leak doesn't happen exactly where you expect and have positioned the sensor, this way you get another chance to detect it early

      Exactly, and such a simple solution to the problem - really liking it.

      It’s a common featured accessory with quality US water leak sensors

      Didn't know that - in EU, we usually don't have them. Probably due to less flooding/leaking issues.

    Finally a solution to detect if there is water in my castle mote 🏰

      I tried but alligators in my mote ate through the cable.

    Looks great, I wounder if you could just use the cable in a U shape pattern to keep it submerged in water and test loss of water that way? for example, stick it in my Roborock s7 ultra clean water tank to get alerted when its under half empty....

    • @BeardedTinker
      @BeardedTinker  3 місяці тому +1

      Didn't try but it shouldn't be a problem to set up. One note - it takes some time for cable to dry, just take that into account. Also, I'm not sure of the impact of this on battery life - it may be 0 or a lot.

    This is perfect. I was thinking make something same, two cable system for extenstion. But false alarm create lot of issue. I am living in slovakia with "panel" multi story buildings, where issue of leaking from neighbor is quiet common.
    Until now all leak sensor was point based. So i use only one in my bucket for aircon output (To prevent driping from balcony)

    • @BeardedTinker
      @BeardedTinker  3 місяці тому

      Oh, that's a good use case - should put on around my bucket on balcony too...

    I like the idea of the cable but I have a question: does the cables lay flat and make context with the surface all along it's length? If it doesn't last flat then it's ability to detect leaks can be hampered

    • @BeardedTinker
      @BeardedTinker  3 місяці тому

      You have to straighten it out, but it can stay in contact with full surface.

      I didn't know Yolink has Zigbee version of water link detection sensor... If it really could be better product, especially if they managed to get 1/4 mile on Zigbee network - that would be the first. But than again, that's not that big selling point as people usually don't have homes that are 1/4 mile long.

      @jpileggi1 3 місяці тому +1

      @@BeardedTinker This protocol is not Zigbee based. Using the devices through Home Assistant makes the protocol agnostic. What truly makes Yolink unique more than the signal range is that its products can operate through masonry walls and steel enclosures…usefulness is far beyond its range capabilities.
      “YoLink smart home devices use two frequencies: 923.3 MHz for LoRa and 2412-2462 MHz for Wi-Fi. YoLink devices use a proprietary protocol to communicate with the hub at 923.3 MHz, while the hub connects to the internet and network at 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.”

      Since you're commenting on Zigbee device, it would only be fair to compare similar things. But if it's same price range - 10USD, than it shouldn't be a big deal...

    I would be cautious using a water leak detector with a fish tank situation. The exposed contacts allow a small amount of power across them. This is very small and may not cause an issue, but fish are very sensitive to this sort of thing.

    • @BeardedTinker
      @BeardedTinker  3 місяці тому

      It shouldn't be the problem as some other senors have that and also there are off-the-shelf aquarium sensors that use same principle. But good catch! Will need to measure if there is any power going through them.

    With a grid of gold probes instead of two, and used at an angle to self drain, it could be used as a rain detector. RD's are missing in the great scheme of Zigbee devices. Not sure the cable could be used to detect, maybe you could try it out and let us know.
