Pro Tip: with a heavier tamper, the trick is that you stand upright, lift the tamper 3-6 inches and let it fall. You let the weight of the bar do the work. Standing upright will save your shoulders and back. But in then end, you will be putting enough posts to find out what is the most comfortable for you. Have fun!

A new is bit is the best idea, but a gradual pressure on the digger will help in difficult soils to speed up the process. It is not so much wieght issue as it is a steady downward pressure. Even a drill press needs pressure to go deeper through the material.

You can wield a bracket on the back of your auger to add 3 or 4 of those tractor suitcase weights. It will make digging much easier since tractor 3 point lift does not have hydraulic down pressure like a skid steer.

You might consider using the 6" drill to drill the pilot hole and then following it up with the 9". When I have to drill in to aluminum with a 1/2" drill bit, I start with 1/4" then make my way up to 1/2".

You need to weld a weight bar on the top of the auger so you can add weight. The 3 point will pick it up no problem but without down pressure you're going to continue fighting every hole.

I’d weld a flat plate to a 1” round stock bar with put two holes in the plate. I’d then attach that plate to the auger housing. You then push down on the bar while it is digging. This is normal in my neck of the woods. The ground is dry and hard.

Adding weight is correct, you could even weld a couple of pieces of pipe onto your digger then use a cheater pipe to apply pressure gradually

It's not a weight issue. That bit is stuffed. Same as a hand drill bit, when its blunt you can push as hard as you want but it won't work.

    • @paulsackett3485
      @paulsackett3485 5 місяців тому +2

100% agree not a weight issue. I had the same problem and replaced my cutting edges and pilot bit and augered holes this past August when we hadn’t got any rain for 6 weeks and it dug right down no problem. Also if you have the possibility of rocks in your soil lower the rpm’s on the tractor. I run my auger at about 1000

we used to dig thousands of holes when we grew tomatos , 1960s/1970s.

You're experiencing the main reason I invested in an auger for my front end loader. With the FEL auger you can add down pressure, unlike the 3 point auger. It's another expense but it's been worth it! If you do go that route, just make sure to get one that can be offset to the side so you can see it from the tractor seat.

JudithB Looks good Evan!!! The cold takes a toll when working out side too. I use to set railroad ties on our fences for gates, and hand dug the holes, then got one end of the tie at the hole and then lifted it to slide in to the hole. Sort of like you do the electric poles with the tractor. I finally made it to 76, and still digging holes and setting tee posts tho!! If you measure from the tip of the post hole digger and down one of the handles to mark measurements you wont need the measuring tape every time you dig a hole!!

Hi Evan - That is a fancy tamper that you have made there but it seems to work well, we also always used a wood 2x4 and a small sledgehammer to tamp but we did usually have wet soft ground, we cemented in the bottom of the big corner and gate posts to prevent them from lifting or leaning. You are also right that your post hole auger needs sharpened/repaired as it has no bite and doesn't want to dig.

Evan! Evan! Evan! If only you would buy the - spud bar - I have advocated to you before. The spud bar would have the chisel point the other end to loosen the - clay? - (even rocky ground) up a lot. Then you could go back with the tractor auger, or the post hole digger to remove the loosened material. Also the spud bar will serve as a sturdy lever if ever required. The tamping head of the spud bar has a larger diameter, to spread the impact over a larger area. In my opinion your "tamper" may tend to get stuck as you are working it. My Father used no mechanical tools, when he was fencing. The - spud bar - a post hole shovel, a 2 ft pinch bar(for tensioning wires), a few pairs/styles of fencing pliers and a claw hammer, was his kit. With that he could put in fences at twice the rate my Brothers and myself could manage.

But both of them are doing it and learning.

Now I wish some of these would visit each other, but that is cuz I don't understand the work ethic and pride they all have. Farmer Tyler Ranch, all by himself. But if they wanted to friendly help, that is different.

Like you said evan, the steel tamper does a much better job tamping than your 2X2 stick. That means you get a more secure post with probably 1/4 of the lift and drops. So I'm going to suggest you are probably overdoing the tamping. Next time, monitor how many drops it really takes.
Suggestion about your hay feeder; If you're going to put up a roof, it might be a good idea to build a deck to keep the hay up off the ground and out of the mud. SHould have a lot less wastage with that easy addition.👍

Evan, I feel your pain, post hole diggers will warm you up fast. I appreciate that you explain things so thoroughly.

You need a digging bar. Steel bar about 5' long with a flat tamper on one end and a heavy chisel on the other end.

You need to replace the point and the cutting teeth on the auger. You will be surprised at the difference it makes. Hopefully the auger bit is not worn to the bolt holes.

I feel your pain with the tamper. Many moons ago I bought an 8 ft long heavy tamper from a big box store. Chisel tip on one end, round tamper head on the other. I'd carry it from the shed to whatever job I was doing that day but it took all my energy just to drag it back.

I hope your gates don't pull those posts out of plumb. You will have a lot of leverage on the hinge side from the weight of the gate.

Fill the pipe with sand to give it more weight. Giving it more weight would help with the tamping of the dirt. Welding another piece of steel over the top will keep in the sand for you or you could leave it so you could better move it about.Putting the feeder in the fence was a nice idea.

Better still, buy a PROPER Spud Bar.

Spud Bar is now replaced by the term Fencing Bar. However they come in handy for so many other jobs.

Attach a handle to the auger for leverage

Great video a lot of work but worth the extra time you put in to do it right. Great idea building hay feeder in and covering it over. Just an idea , you said your 6" auger drills better .Could you predrill and then move up to 9" bit ?
