- The 2015 Kia Forte Koup SX is a two door coupe with 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. This comes from a turbocharged 1.6L I4 engine which is matched to either a 6 speed manual or automatic transmission. The Forte can be paired with a good number of features including leather heated and cooled drivers seat, heated steering wheel, auto dimming mirror, automatic folding exterior mirrors, dual zone climate control, and three steering modes.

I actually own a 2014 Kia koup sx turbo and it think it's a great car I averaged 40+ mpg on a recent round trip from Vegas to Phoenix, Grand Canyon and back. It's all on how you drive it. I also frequent take my car to SCCA track events and post faster times then a lot of muscle cars with V8's and Ford Focus ST and fiesta ST. This is a great underrated car. Total sleeper and a great everyday driver
+Jeff Porter I saw your comment on SmokingTires and it seems all the positive comments are from owners themselves. Sometimes there are a few who have test driven it and then they have rather bad impressions of the car. Mind you, I am an owner myself and I do like the car so long as you take the price you paid into the equation. There are better cars out there to be had; just not at this price point. My only beef is when owners pump their cars tires they seem to go overboard with comments like, "totally sleeper" or "beating cars with more horsepower, etc"

i own a blue 2015 koup love it i put aftermarket rims with low profile perelli P1 tires solved that grip problem the korean nexen tires they come with even tho last long (depending on your driving) suck and the only real competitor i cant beat in a drag is a VW golf so overall satisfied and the new look is definitely a plus from the 1st gen

From what I've read, there is a software upgrade to get the track button to work correctly, however you must buy buy a teacup and put it in the glove box for it to work.

Hey Engineering Explained can you do a video on a 6 stroke engine, and what advantages it would give over a 4 stroke engine?
God I've been saying it since I sold Kias back in 2010 but Kia needs to put their turbo motor in the Koup SX that gets 276 hp. Problem is Hyundai won't let them cause of the Genesis. The 1st generation 6 speed Koup SX was the better car with a better suspension and more responsive steering.

Love the look of the hatchback. My gf has the veloster turbo and im pretty impressed with it. I have had/have some fast cars and this car can do just fine. The dct really shifts fast.
The tires are this cars weakness. Change them an it really hooks up nicely.

Engineering Explained Exactly. Its by no mean a fast sports car but its quick and the versility of the hatch is priceless. Also the equipment at that price point is really a deal. People always point to the feista st over the veloster turbo but really they are not in the same categorey. Veloster turbo is larger, better appointed, and comes in a dct which is why my gf bought it as she cannot drive stick (trying to teach her). I think it is just the right blend of sportiness, creature comfort, and versitility (the hatchback). However the rear suspension on these needs to be upgraded. Okay my rant is done hahaha

I have the Kia Soul with the 1.6 manual (130 hamster Power) and I also have that same "track" button and I have the same problem. I will be in a nice sweeper with as tightening radius and I will hit the "track" button and I will go from Sammy Haggar "I Can't Drive 55" to Rod Stewart "Only You". I think that its main purpose is mood control :-)

I'm looking for a car in this segment (Forte5 not Koup) with a bit of "oumf" nothing to crazy. I've tried the Forte5 and loved the ride quality.
I've tried the Mazda3, Ford Focus titanium etc. Most of them has 30ish HP less than the KIA and are more expensive that it for all those features. (CAD ponies :P )
Don't get me wrong I know some of those cars have better ride/handeling quality for Track etc. but I'm never going to do track... Who does with a car like that.

Really nice for a Kia! Hell I would buy the hatchback version in an instant. With a little bit of help (stiffer, lower suspension, tune, etc.) it seems like it would be a car that would surprise a lot of people.I know somebody that races his previous gen Forte Koup and this one seems to be a big step above the last generation. Curious to see what they can do.

do you notice any lag from when you press the gas? I drove a KIA forte a couple years ago and was turned off at the fact that when I pressed the gas, I'd have to wait 2 seconds before anything actually happened.
Hits peak torque really early, I didn't notice significant lag if I was in the right gear. If it was auto mode, there would certainly be a pause for a downshift (or two) though.

my uncle has one of these and he raced me in my 01 ford escape with the v6 and he only beat me by a couple of car lengths i was really dissapointed

I have a 2015 forte5 sx 6sp. The factory nexen tires were absolutely horrific. Worst excuse for tires I have ever seen. I put a set of conti DWS' on months after purchase and it was a different car. However they only lasted 1 season. I just moved to a set of BFG comp2 a/s tires and these have totally transformed the car entirely. Next order of business will be to replace the rear beam bushings with some superpro poly to cure the rear squirmyness when you hit mid corner bumps.

+Engineering Explained All SX models are turbo. The EX comes with a non-turbo 2.0. I have the SX hatch 6 speed and am in love with it. What it lacks in power it makes up for in included features, I value the features over power for a daily driver car. The after market addresses pretty much every "flaw" this car has. However we are all waiting on a handheld tuner like an access port. There is about 50whp locked away in software alone on these cars along with a massive MPG gain. The engine tuning is where kia really failed.
could a few mods improve the vehicle as a whole?
I know this comments old af but ima respond to it anyway. Yes, I have the 1st gen koup sx with all the basic works, cai, exhaust, preformance brakes, coilovers, bigger better tires and wheels, upgraded clutch and flywheel, and a short shifter and it's a fun car for sure and actually performs really well for what it is. Get compliments on it more than my 2nd gen dsm and a lot of people have no idea what car it is and are always surprised when I say it's a kia(it has kdm badging)
They need to invent a "sequential shift" that Acts as a manual!!!! Same h pattern only when u want a auto you got an auto! But when you want that manual h shifter (with clutch) you can have fun!!! Just in stead of gears grinding you can have an auto gear stile but still have fun!!!

+Pretzil295 So what depresses the clutch when it's in "auto" mode? What changes the gears? It'd be fairly costly, when opting for a manual or automatic is cheaper, and chances are you probably want one more than the other, I'm not sure what market would opt for it.
I own a 2013 SX, the last year of the 1st gen produced.
It has every option, black leather, red stitching, sunroof ect.
Fuel economy is par for the course.
If it was any better it would become a Honda fit.
It's already kind of gutless as is, so I wouldn't want to trade power for fuel economy, no way.
I definitely feel like the 2nd gen lost its edge.
It got softer and less fun.
Also, the aftermarket part selection definitely favors gen 1 aswell, so keep that in mind.
The selection of aftermarket parts for the gen 2 is significantly less.
They don't make much for the 14 to 16s.
The market leans heavily gen 1.
So if you're going to buy this car like me to fix it up, you're better off going with a nice gen 1.
They look better too in my opinion.

Shame the Forte isn't on the same level as Kia's European cars. I have a Pro_Cee'd GT with the same Engine and I think almost all the errors you pointed out would be ironed out or reduced if the Forte was set-up in the same manner. The Independent rear suspension and 225 PS3 tyres would definitely go a long way to fix things.

Manual is more fun paired with the 1.6T. I drove the Koup auto and the hatch auto was better.
How does this compare to a Civic Si? Is the Civic worth the extra money over this? How was the overall quality of the Forte Koup? Like did you notice any short comings like uneven panel gap, loose trim pieces, overall cheapness?
Loose trim pieces? Where have you been car shopping haha. Quality was fine. I have not driven the SI.

***** I think the chance of getting a car with junk quality control is pretty low but it still exists.
Brought a new 2015 Nissan NV200 base model. $21,000. Bumpers don't sit flush, badge isn't straight, door/window gaskets aren't straight, rattles, paint over spray on dash board, too much slack in door hinges(causing door failure, yes DOOR FAILURE). Many more that I have just forgotten about. My 7 year old Subaru with 60k miles has the same amount of issues as this new van with 2000 miles.
I know it's a work van but that's not an excuse for crappy quality control.

My 2010 forte koup sx gets horrid gas mileage. I average around 18mpg city and 25 highway and it's only a 173hp 2.4L 4cly n/a and I have the 6speed manual. That being said its acceleration is impressive for a 2010 n/a 4cly kia. You can reach 60mp in 2nd. Rear beam suspension kills stock handling a bit but coilovers helped a lot. Definitely spins easily an lsd help a lot but I dont think it's worth it unless you're gonna turbo the car which just isnt worth the $3-4k it cost especially on a used model youd find now. Could make 300-400hp boosted though and it's pretty easy to do. You buy this car cause you want something unique and rarely seen also for the styling the 1st gens looked best in its class at the time imo though ultimately the civic si of that year was the better performer but the price reflected that.
It has a heated and cooled seat and a heated steering wheel. You would have to get a BMW to get those features. This may be my next car
Actually seems pretty nice overall - I wish I had a heated steering wheel (and I'm surprised more cars don't have one). But yeah, that fuel economy is really questionable, and I also wonder how good the longevity of the car is. The thing about a lot of reviews of new cars is the car may seem great at first but you never know how it'll stand the test of time.
+Peter Schmidt 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty from the manufacturer? I'd say they're pretty confident in their cars at this point. But yeah I am actually a little disappointed with that fuel economy, and disappointed that they went with the 1.6L T instead of their 2.0L GDi engine and turbocharge it.

buildmorefarms100 No, it's really not. He's driven convertible sports cars that had better fuel economy than this. I drive a Subaru Impreza (2.0L AWD) and average at around 34MPG. Any FWD/RWD economy car that has advertises an average MPG below 33 is bad for today's standards. It'd have decent maybe 5 years ago.
Peter Schmidt Ok, several things, the Subaru Impreza is one of the slowest new cars made, it uses a CVT and is designed for fuel economy, it is totally boring, the AWD is nice but that's it. The Kia Koup SX is a turbo and does 0-60 in 6.6 seconds (about 3 seconds quicker than an Impreza) and yet it stil gets 33+mpg avg in his mixed driving test including his 0-60 run which wasn't economical driving...Id pick the Kia turbo against the Impreza. Subaru resale is much better though, I will admit that.

Not a bad looking car, the interior looks decent as well, however; I'm not a big fan of the paddle shifters attached to the steering wheel.
Of the cars I've driven, I've found the steering wheel mounted ones to feel the most convenient. On the Evo there were times my hands weren't in the right spot for a shift (column mounted). Not a major difference though.
since you're doing korean cars again... can you do the hyundai veloster?
I'm hoping to, there's an approval process I'm working on with Hyundai.

I prefer the previous body style, it's also a few thousand cheaper since it doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles. I'm baffled by the fuel economy. I didn't know cars with larger engines get better economy.

No, you'll probably never see that haha. But almost all intake manifolds are plastic these days.

Pretzil295 The engine in this car is also in the KIA pro cee'd GT and the hyundai veloster it has quite a bit of sports car in it's blood, i wouldn't say it's an eco car it just doesn't have the electric diff and the good sticky tires the pro cee'd GT has which is why it's not as good in the corners. Besides the FRS/BRZ were never build to be performance cars they were build for the experience of driving them and their handling.

For $26k I would buy a Genesis Coupe. Rwd, 3.8 V6 soundtrack, and an excellent warranty.

Sjrick did it in Northern Vermont for years, and never had a problem. Just gotta know how to drive it, with a set of good tires RWD goes just fine in the snow.
How much snow did you deal with ?
Sjrick usually a foot or 2 per storm, but easily got 3-4 feet for a couple storms throughout the winter. Get several storms throughout the winter, sometimes from late October through April of the next year.

I wonder what it is with their fuel economy. VW turbos get way MPG and put out much more power. Wish they could solve that problem.
SKEMETUBE Tiguan has a 200hp turbo and it gets like 19 and 25. It's awful on mileage

Bingo, They are similar speed wise but while the Kia is about versatility (especially the Hatch version) the suspension on the ST is amazing for a FWD car. Reminds me of the Type R Integra.

Anyone else notice that the car was changing gears constantly, even when you seemed to be on a fairly straight looking bit of road. Or perhaps it's just you pumping the gas pedal back and forth...? Argh.. Automatics... It's also probably why it gets so bad gas mileage. Old-style automatics just aren't efficient.
+Kepe They certainly can be efficient. I managed over 40 mpg in the Scion FRS, which was better than the manual version (and is rated higher).
But does the Kia have torque converter lock-up like the FR-S? The slipping torque converter is the reason why regular automatics are so inefficient. The FR-S has a locking torque converter (2nd through 6th gear), greatly increasing efficiency.
It's easy to test whether the torque converter has lock-up or not, especially if the transmission has a manual mode. Just pop it in high gear while driving at a constant speed, then press the gas pedal and see if the revs jump up a little before the car starts to accelerate. A regular torque converter always allows some slip, so engine revs can change without affecting the speed of the car. But if the torque converter is in lock-up mode, it doesn't allow slip, so the revs cannot change without the car actually accelerating.
Oh well.. The manual Kia Forte Koup SX seems to have even worse fuel economy. I'm at a loss here for the reason for it having such poor efficiency. The 2 liter NA engine variant seems to get a little better mileage all around, so perhaps it's the turbocharged engine then. Perhaps it runs on boost even in low rpms, increasing fuel consumption?
Really? Part of the reason why autos were killing manuals is cause they have been proven to get better gas mileage, not saying you can't get better mpg in a manual over a auto in certain cars but unless your gears are set for such or you had enough practice in a manual to work it so, it's just hard to argue manual over most sportmatics or even basic autos

+SoSickWidit Everyone here buys them for their daughters first car. It's a relatively cheap new or pre owned car with pretty good crash test ratings, it's a reliable engine that produces enough power while getting decent gas mileage, and it's roomy enough so they can fit lots of friends or fit all their dorm stuff in one. The sorority house parking lots are filled with them

I remember when I drove my aunts Prius on a 3 hour trip. I actually gained a little respect for the thing, I filled up before I left and never had to stop for the rest of the day, this is including traffic. Beautiful thing. My 300 S would've had to make a stop a couple of times for gas.
