Spent a good 4 months at King Edward Point (staying at Larsen House) winter 1995. Often awoke to elephant seals at the front door. good job we had an emergency exit. we had a great time down there. often going ski touring and exploring the island. I was a boat operator and looked after the damage which involved fibre glassing holes in the boats. while down there I made 6 snowboards with this skill. we'd get resupplied by ships every 6 weeks or so and every 2 weeks an airdrop from a Hercules. thanks for sharing ps we sailed in a flat bottom boat. 4 days of rough seas. epic

Hi Pamela, Great to hear from you, thanks for watching friend. The King penguins are there all season so it doesn’t matter what month you decide to go. More Elephant seals in November might add to your experience? Can be chilly in November because it’s spring and there is still a lot of snow around. March less snow and easier to walk around, asp March has less male fur seals which is helpful for exploring.
Wonderful video! My wife and I want the best luxury expedition cruise to South Georgia, Falklands, and Antarctica. We are seriously considering taking the Scenic Eclipse in November, or perhaps waiting for the 2023 sailing of the Viking Octantis for this itinerary. Would you recommend these ships for the best excursions and luxury acommodations/dining? Other suggestions? Thanks!!

Really when you see videos and or pictures of South Georgia they only talk and show the old whaling stations, I didn't know about the town right next to the old whaling station till today.
I would’ve thought you would need to acclimatise to a certain climate before being said fit yes?
Have very soft spot in my heart for any penguin, and whale/dolphin!
Hi Ina, great question but this is not necessary at all. You might be thinking of Mount Everest where you need to acclimatise whilst hiking up there. This is in Antartica, where the weather is actually quite pleasant. Temperatures range from 5 to 15 degrees celsius. Thanks so much for watching friend ❤️❤️❤️

Currently booked on Poseidon late October 2024 voyage to Falklands and South Georgia (Fly-in Fly out) on the MV Sea Spirit. After this video I am really looking forward to it! Can you give me a idea of what October is like in South Georgia?
Hi Calvin. Fly in fly out basically means you will start in the Falklands and end in the Falklands? There are no airports on SG. So in October I think it’s fair to expect at least 2.5 days of sailing each way to SG so probably about 5 days in total transiting, that’s if the weather is reasonable. I have spent 3 days in a storm coming back from SG before! It’s likely going to be a bit cold and maybe some rain too, a little grey possibly. If you luck out, and the sun shines, it will be golden and spectacular. Weather aside, male Elephant seals will be starting to build harems and there will be a huge amount of kings on the beaches. It will also be quiet, little tourist traffic that time of year. Best of luck with your voyage.

Hello there.. thank you for the informational video. I am considering a trip and torn between Ponant and Quark expedition. The difference is cost. Ponant is cheaper and does not require to share a room. The sailings are early Nov or early Dec. Do you have any thoughts?
Hi Sneha, Great to hear from you, thanks for watching friend. You say the difference is cost, that might be one thing that’s different, but they are very different experiences too, so it’s not just cost. I have been onboard with both operators. My thoughts are that this is a trip of a lifetime and getting it right is important. Worth calling an agent who can fill in a few gaps for you. I currently work at Swoop Antarctica. @@TheNewbys Thank you so much for the quick reply. I spoke to the reps for both companies and since the itinerary is exactly same I am not able to figure out the difference in experience 😂. Ponant does not require me to share a room, one time paddling and the voyage is in Nov 2023. Quark is affordable only if I share a room(still price is higher than Ponant), unlimited kayak and the voyage is in Dec 2022.

Need guidance! We want to visit South Georgia this fall. Looking at Magellan Explorer but wondering about size viz a vis sea sickness and capacity. Mom doesn't like to walk on uneven downhills. Will there still be enough places for her to get out and see stuff? Didn't see a link for travel advice.

But seriously John, we can see your point of view, and why you would show concern. Having travelled there, and knowing how respectful the guides are we don’t fee the same way that you do. There are very strict rules about how you interact with wildlife and how you can land in Antarctica. IAATO the governing body for tourism in the southern polar regions has created strict guide lines to ensure animals are not disturbed. Worth also noting that recent research around Portlockroy has shown that penguins actually benefit from interaction with humans, this is shown by a growing colony, penguins actively seeking to nest near people! We feel that the more people know about these epic and special places the more they will want to protect them. We don’t expect you to change your mind on this, but we hope some of your concerns have been put to rest a little. 👍
@@TheNewbys That's good to know. I would love to travel (and I do travel a fair bit, globally), but I am pretty concerned about disturbing the habitat given to us. But this is reassuring.
It’s a tricky balance for sure, and one well flagged by you. Thanks. One sad aspect of this larger issue is that places like Antarctica and South Georgia are protected from harm because of the money that tourism brings, not in-spite of it. This is sad because not all habitats have this wealth, especially since tourism (Covid world) has all but stopped. Think big game parks in Africa, without park fees rangers have been left unpaid and so animals unprotected, poaching has followed. As you say, it’s a balance and one that is quite literally wobbling from one side to the other constantly, what can we do to help? Chose our guides wisely, time our trip for least disturbance, pay park fees, etc. Enjoy your travels friend. Let us know if you come across a place where balance, or not, has been found.

For an expedition cruise you would expect to pay about that and upwards, especially if you are looking at jumping on a smaller vessel.

Hi Alexander, great that you worked there a few years, what did you do? I disagree with you, tourism does not destroy destinations it protects them. Landing fees and taxes charged to tourist for travelling to South Georgia and places like SG directly help to fund projects such rat eradication as well as ensuring that more invasive visits do not take place. I direct you to the IAATO web site which I’m sure you are familiar with. Yes, we can all agree that wild places should stay wild, but research has shown us that penguins like people (Port Lockroys expanding Gentoo population) and that money is needed to ensure environments are cared for and looked after ( expanding blue whale populations in southern SG) Thanks for dropping us a line friend, no doubt you would like to return to SG one day and we hope you do, likely that will be as a tourist? ;) 👍
@@TheNewbys I was in the crew of HMS ENDURANCE so spent a lot of time around there and other places down the ice, nobody will ever convince me that tourists are good in these places mate, there’s some places on earth that should be left alone and not for people to profit from. How do you know penguins like people have you asked one?
Hi Alexander, Science has suggested penguins like people. Of course it’s difficult to talk to a penguin. But penguin populations tend to grow at landing sites where there are more frequent visits of people, such a Port Lockroy. It’s a good indicator.
