And yeah, great time to get into planes! I'm getting back into flying soon. Definitely start with something small, don't be fooled by large trainers- they're not really even easier to fly, they ARE easy to smash into little pieces.
I would suggest an ultra micro Piper Cub type plane (cheap, durable, and easy), or a slightly larger 3D foamie (adjustable rates, no stalls, very durable). Soft EPP foam 3D planes offer everything with plenty room for growth, and they can be EXTREMELY durable, up to "unbreakable" levels.
