    Good vibes from Brazil! We may cross paths someday, as I also own a trawler in northern Italy and cruise extensively during summer! Keep on! It will work out nice with your half very soon back!

      Hey Mark, thank you so much for your reply. I own an interesting and seaworthy Selene36 2004 (actually 41ft in length). Fin stabilized, and equipped with twin engines.

    Really enjoying following your adventures. It would be interesting to know if there is a remote kill switch option available, that if in the unlikely event you were to go overboard that Awanui NZ didn’t sail off into the sunset.

      I am looking into that….there absolutely will be just how it works is anyone’s guess. Was hoping there would be a water activated one but suspect not.

    Wow Mark! Another stunning episode!! There is nothing I look more forward to, than another episode of "Awanui NZ" - No Netflix or HBO can match this. I enjoy other YT channels, as Aquaholic and Yachtbuyer and such, but you never know what they will post. With you, it is always a Trawler, and always a bit of "life" as well.... and you do it so well! And what a journey singlehanded.... We see it edited and it looks very very good - But we watch it from the safety of our stressless office chairs aso.... you are doing it! It must be a thrill to do 10 hours solo passages, and still be recording. You (both) are an inspiration, and you get under ones skin! I cannot stress enough, how much I (and so many others) truly enjoy these small "holidays" as a new episode is launched on this - the best trawler channel on YT. Take care and steam on......

    Another beautiful episode Mark. Like you, I am sceptical that the outboard engine temperature alarm will be solved by changing the engine oil, but I am not a mechanic; however, I took an outboard engine maintenance course and I recall the excellent instructor stating that just because you have a telltale water flow does not mean there is not a blockage in the cooling system somewhere, so perhaps it would be worthwhile examining the whole cooling system.

    • @AwanuiNZ
      @AwanuiNZ  6 днів тому

      It looks like it may have been the oil…no alarm. I am very surprised. Will report further and confess in a future episode.

    Good morning Mark, lovely video. Do you not have a floaty wrist band for your Steelhead crane remote?
    I completely understand where you’re coming from. June 2024 after 7 years of deliberating I bought a delphino 64 trawler yacht. Best move I ever made, no stress factors anymore and blood pressure right down.
    Ironically about to go into shipyard for an aluminium factory hardtop!
    Ps you always find the money for your yacht!

    Mark, instead of having a bracket at the bottom, could you mount a super strong magnet under the back of the controls where you will put the bottom bracket? Then, the pole coming down would meet that magnet, so you would have no holes in your beautiful control deck area.

    Hi Mark (and Fiona!) I'm not often moved to comment on UA-cam but you've achieved it. I just wanted to say that even though we've never met I feel involved in your adventure, and more, in your life. Your openness, honesty and willingness to share your experiences and emotions are what make your channel unique. I stumbled across your channel at the time you took delivery and have watched avidly since. I'm glad you are feeling supported and are continuing with your dream, whilst there may be no-one else on Awanui NZ Mark, you are never alone! Cheers and safe travels!

    Kia Ora Mark! What an inspiration you and Fiona are, both living your dreams and enjoying every min. Easy to forget that throughout our working lives, couples actually don't spend every minute together so the expectation that somehow it should be different in retirement seems perhaps misaligned with modern lives. I'm 44 retirement seems a long way off and currently I spend a fair bit of time travelling in your old work place between NZ and AU (no further comment about A320's!). I'm fortunate that my partner loves boating and our retirement dream is definitely to be on the water. We have children young enough currently to enjoy boating with us and while I've no doubt that will change we are enjoying it while it lasts. No doubt in the weeks ahead you will have those travel moments where satisfaction is in the sharing... take your joy from knowing you have a following that are enjoying sharing your joy as you embark on your journey. We look forward to the day your journey will bring you home to the waters of Aotearoa, who knows we might even be there to meet you. Safe Travels. Josh.

    Mark along with your why fest your e purb in your radio I would also have installed a kill switch lanyard on the steering column on the fly bridge and on the main bridge and the reasons for that is if you were ever were thrown from the boat you would automatically shut off the engine so you can swim to it and get back also I would set up The little plugins all around the different parts of the boat like in the cockpit and on the bough so if you have to do some there you plug yourself in so if the boat is on and will not go anywhere if you fall in you have a great day

    Mark, for what it’s worth I would add the two diagonal stays and the rear braces before you attempt to put anything straight in the middle. The front stays will assist both side to side and any uplift movement of the Bimini.

    • @AwanuiNZ
      @AwanuiNZ  9 днів тому

      I had thought that as well but my goal is to have the central supports easily removable. All that would be left are the clip to brackets on the helm station which would not worry me. Biggest issue in my mind is the 78KG of solar on the top with no middle support. I will think more on it. No rush as I use strops to give more security when necessary.

    I split with my GF very close to you, in Nice. Had a WONDERFUL 10 years sailing by myself. First challenge was getting into the fuel dock. But all good since then. I am sure you will enjoy it. Especially the sea time... and ocean time if you go trans Atlantic solo. I only ever take someone on board when I *do not need* them :) For all the passages I was told I would really need help, I went solo and loved it. I learned more solo than ever before. Now, 5 years ago I floated into a port and was cornered and married! Together we sail the world and love it, together. But the big difference is I have to confidence to do anything in the world.
    If you winter in the south of France you will enjoy it. If you stop by Palavas Les Flots we are here till February. Then back to the boat in the US. Then UK 2025.
    Might see you somewhere.

    Great stuff Mark. Very special for us watchers to listen to your personal reflections while travelling alone. Being alone for any extensive periods of time can put you in a place where you begin acknowledging those people, like your Dad, who had such an influence on your life. Often, if they have passed away, it raises loving emotions where you realise you really miss their support and strength. I certainly identified with you while you talked about your Dad. By the way my Dad boarded at Scots College in the late 1930’s and my cousin John Clarke, alias Fred Dagg, went there in the 1960’s. I think both of them were not Model students but they went on to be very special people.

    It was already midnight when I saw you had posted a new video, so instead of going to bed I decided to watch and am not disappointed. Another great video, beautiful anchorage at the end and nice to hear how you got to flying. It is true that most of the time you just have to 'Go for it' and that is something you did.
    Very wise decision to be safety minded and be prepared for falling overboard. Wish more people would think like you, would save a lot of lives.
    As for the bimini we found out that the frame is usually not the problem. Our frame is roughly like yours, but we have the two extra supports on pt and stbd. What we found out in storms (67+ kts) is that the frame will stay, the cloth of the bimini on the other hand will be ripped apart. Happened to us in Gouvia, Corfu last year. So perhaps it is an option to simply take the bimini cover (and solar panels) down in winter time, since the solar panels won't have a high production anyway. Winter in Europe is usually with a lot of wind, clouds and rain, you also may want to protect your panels. It is just an idea.
    Hope you are staying away from Spain, the bad weather ain't over yet, you don't want to get caught in between.

    09:44 - I had a similar issue with Garmin Activecaptain when going from Helsinki, Finland to Tallinn, Estonia in September. Even when Activecaptain said that everything was loaded, it wasn't. Luckily I had the data on the original card, so I popped my activecaptain SD card out and put the original SD card in which fixed my issue. Wasn't too happy with the situation as marine plotters *should* be bulletproof when it comes to this stuff 😞

    I like to tell young folks that, to succeed at any and everything, you have to have hundreds of good character attributes. But fail you only need one of three. Fear pride and ego. They will make fail no matter how skillful you are. But if you have no fear of having people see you fail, horribly sometimes, and you have the willingness to do what ever it takes, those hundreds of good character attributes, will help you gain what ever skills you need. Good character and skills will overcome any obstacle in your way to success.
    Your story is proof positive. Now you sail on alone. Sadness and being lonely are not phases of human nature. They are feelings we choose to let overcome us occasionally. It happens… it makes us human. You have inspired me finish what I started. I have sailed, under power, 3/4 the way around the world- none of it solo. The last 1/4 will be solo. I’ve done from the Suez to San Diego heading east from the Suez. So I’m very, very done the entire pacific. Loved NZ by the way. One of 9 erupting volcanoes I’ve accidentally witnessed. Just like always, you will land the ship and family will be waiting. Brett you and yours.

    Enjoy your videos. I single-handed a 51ft Ocean Alexander for 3 years, thousands of cruising miles around Florida, Bahamas and up to Maine and back. That was 25 years ago, miss it. Previous vessel was a 42ft Classic Grand Banks, after OA was a 58ft that was last that sold and moved to land. I wish had kept the GB and continued with it to this day. I caught much of what I ate with rice. A vacuum pack Foodsaver and freezer space was important.

    There is a poignancy to your videography since you’re solo. Love it. While solo you will discover different ways to achieve the goals you set, whether launching and retrieving the tender, anchoring, berthing, whatever. Still more lessons to learn. As the year winds down you’re going to get less daylight hours, and you will face the challenge of very short hops, and/or being under way during darkness. You may consider a clip on/off tether should be need to go forward in lumpy conditions. Go well.

    Anywho, random though. On the canopy structure. I think k you should start with two vertical supports from the front rail of the fly bridge to the top canopy just one in the middle.

    Morning Mark. Great stuff. Just a thought to extend range and reduce oil changes have you looked at running on one engine? Things you will have to check,,does your gearbox self oil when prop free swinging and secondly battery charging. When patrolling in Cook Strait cable zone we shut down one main engine and swapped over every 24 hours, big fuel saving and likewise oil. Great option when weather is good. Am assuming steering separate system not run off engine.

      Hydraulics for stabilisers run off Starboard only. ABT advise to keep them on when underway. Also been advised not good for the engine to freewheel so would need a shaft brake…..will look into ABT more and option for shaft brakes. Good thinking.

      @brucebradley2231 10 днів тому +1

      Check your gearbox manual, I know twin disk boxes you cannot, however stabilisers not needed 50% of time. Worth looking into as you are only steaming at 5 to 6 knots, see what she will cruise at on one, maybe increased rpm, however that loads engine up which is fine. Gearbox makers will know if you can drag prop. It depends on where or how gearbox is lubricated. Hopefully you will get up uk way would be good to catch up for a beer. Good sailing.

      @AwanuiNZ dangerous with only one crew member. Nobody can predict when an accident will happen. Mark could injure himself onboard or have a health issue onboard and nobody to help. It could be caused by something simple that requires urgent care. I do not think good idea for Mark to be travelling alone. Even if he only sails in daytime. An "Accident waiting to happen" is a term used when working at sea. Working on boats, yatchs and ship's have plenty hidden dangers that can appear at anytime. As ex Captain of commercial ship's I have seen injuries onboard that occured even when the environment was so called "safe". I have even had to detour from my route to medivac crew members from ship due to unforseen emergency. I would not recommend to anyone what he is doing after seeing so many accidents at sea, and many caused from normal day to day activities. He is taking a calculated risk travelling alone which may or may not pay off.

    Right. That doesn’t make sense. The first oil change should be at 20 hours, but there is no alarm for that. All subsequent oil changes should be every 100 hours. At least that’s for the mercury outboard on my tender. The alarm is supposed to sound if the engine oil is low. It also sounds if the engine is overheating due to poor water flow.
