Finding the frame

- cinematic framing is hard. composition is hard. here are some techniques I use to help achieve the look I have in my head. one tool used here is the director's viewfinder app, cadrage. Let me know if you have any questions.
Babe, the new Blaine video just dropped
Literally did this…
😂😂 this one is a major experiment.
This is me lol
So good man. Such a refreshing change of pace
thanks so much Ryan 🙂
i cannot express enough how this channel exactly what i was looking for. there are five billion channels that talk about cinematography in a vacuum, but never actually going through the thought process of getting the shot. For example your lighting vid was incredibly helpful in thinking through building out lighting for a shot i did over the weekend. totally invaluable.
Thanks so much. I have a lot more planned 😊
This is one of the best filmmaking videos. Pure UA-cam Gold.
Thank you so much!
You’ve outdone yourself 😅 the music, the titles, f**king brilliant. And still, yet again, one of the most insightful videos I will watch this week 🤌🏻
Thank you so much. Still experimenting. Stay tuned.
Okay, you are no doubt the best camera/film youtuber I subscribed to in like a year time! Thank you for the app suggestion!
thank you so much :) more to come...
Bruh .. I find myself clickin on your uploads the minute they pop up 🔥
I hope to provide a true banger on the next one for ya. This one was experimental but I have some cool ideas in the works ☺️
I love that the thumbnail’s framing changed .. very meta
Good eye!
I love your videos. You approach each video/topic straight forward. No dicking around or rambling. Just straight to what we need to understand about the topic at hand. Thanks.
Thanks so much. Trying to always keep it concise but also include a little of the thought process. This video in particular was kind of a test in discussing more of the abstract though process of making an image. Still testing things out.
I do this same exercise! But you make it looks much more fun haha also, the song drop ayyeee
haha experimenting a little bit with music now. love it.
Hey , you truly are a master in composition , it's always a pleasure to watch your videos
Thank you so much. I still have a long way to go but I will be documenting it on UA-cam for the foreseeable future 😇
Bro love this style man! I am really happy to see more working professionals talk about what it is to freelance in the filmmaking space. Keep it up bro!
thanks so much :)
I look forward to you, Gawx, and gxAce the most now.
Thank you :) still experimenting, have some special ideas brewing.
Instantly purchased the app. Thank you for putting me on game!!!
Hope you enjoy it!
I should work on my next youtube video to make a new Resolve tutorial but this channel is so gooood!
Get to work!
oh boy ;) outstanding !!!
Nobody talking he refused 2500$ to preserve his voice. We need more of that here.
Well.. if it wasn’t clear in the video, I requested $2500. Then I shot 95% of the video, then they replied. They offered some money, and I declined bc I was already done and truly support the app. Just to be clear they didn’t email me randomly offering me money!
Damn bro! When did you hit 13k?!?! Congrats!
Also great video! I’ll definitely be downloading this app now
Haha thank you! couple days ago maybe. App is great. Well worth it!
Thanks for sharing! Cadrage is awesome. Been using it for a while. The taking a photo approach is nice. Keeps everything streamlined and efficient.
thank you! the photo approach does help for many projects. gets you in a good flow!
You're still not being fully appreciated but it's getting there. Keep going brother, excellent work.
Thank you! More coming
love the video's man! Learned so much from you, but I always think you look like ben affleck haha
Sven Affleck.
Thank you! A few others have told me this too
👋 Hey Blaine, YT led me to your channel, and I really appreciate your angle on all this video stuff.
I'm an aspiring hobbyist videographer with absolutely nothing public to show for myself, but I just came here to say I appreciate your videos and teaching!
Hey thank you so much Mark :)
I more of a photographer but I have been loving watching your vids! Makes me wanna go shoot some video again
Thank you! Get out there and shoot something!
Great shots! Love your videos!
thank you! more to come.
yo, great video! I remember working with you on a shoot with Clockwork9 in cleveland a few years ago- it was WILD to see this video recommended on my home screen. I had no idea you had a channel! About to dive into your past videos ✌
Yo! Crazy! I remember working with you. UA-cam is a new obsession for me. You still in cle?
@@BlaineWestropp1 Yeah I'm still in cle but I'll be moving to nashville soon. Followed you on insta- lets stay connected!
everything about this video was on point
Thank you 😇
So wild. This guy!
my guy is killing the content game, keep them coming 😤
More on the way!
Blaine. You’re a camera god
😂😂 Habibi! ❤️
edit is fun!
good video.
Thank you 🫡
heck yeah I love cadrage for quickly finding frame for specific cam+lens combo. Spenser Sakurai covered something along VR and room scanning in future. Under the condition, room scanning measure is accurate and not needing VR gear, at the same time gives 3d spectrum visual framing with cadrage's cam+lens implementation. This is going to hit
Super interesting!
I love this channel
Love your vids & perspective
Thank you!
Great stuff!
Thank you ☺️
Great & thanks ¡¡¡¡ i love your channel ¡¡ ❤
Hey thanks so much 😊
Tell us more ab the new cam
Gonna have to wait for the UA-cam vid!
Always a pleasure though im not totally sure what this video was about. Framing? The frame exterior boundaries??? Or whats going on inside the frame?? Not sure what the general context was. Narrative? The app is a super useful tool. Did i miss something with the object removal in the kitchen?? I have used the app on many shoots and its a great way to log frame info ideas and build references for storyboards and for location recces too but when i have had most productive use was in combination with a directors viewfinder and playing with different cine lenses. Im not sure if they are still used in this digital age but the ease with which you can swap out lenses is so much fun and becomes much more specific when deciding how the frame is going to feel. Maybe something that is worth considering is as an editor frames really exist as edits and combinations of frames. That is super obvious but creating tones with frames and moving the focus off centre etc is really what makes a frame work in context imo. Mr robot notwithstanding and it’s interesting how the 2.0 ratio has been an influence or even shooting square. Was that in homecoming?? Julia Roberts series on Netflix where they mixed square and wide. First series. Another issue is art direction. There are so many examples where the edit and consecutive frames are helped enormously when the colour and tone palette of the frames are considered and matched or not matched accordingly given the effect. This also speaks to eyeline and connecting scenes particularly where there is dialogue. Cohen brothers are worth checking out in that respect. Meanwhile always a pleasure. Thx
I haven’t read your full comment but this video is an experiment
@@BlaineWestropp1 apologies its 2am and I didn’t watch it through carefully. Ignore.
No apology needed… love your input as always. Will report back when I fully read tomorrow ☺️

dope, love your vids man
Thank you Drew!
what did I just watch? Was it a tutorial? I don't know, but it was EPIC and I learned a lot!
Haha…glad to hear!
hahah i love you dude. Can't explain it i just do.
hahaha thank you. I love you too.
tysm!!
😇😇
I use that app all the time. It takes me too long to find and craft a UA-cam talking head setup.
I use the app on every shoot. so easy.
Hey man, so I just bought a few lights, and inspired by you I started practicing replicating light scenes. Then I realized I needed a monitor on my hands like you do to be able to set up the lights properly. What is the one I see you’re holding on all of your videos? … I also need a haircut btw xD
yo! glad to hear you are practicing. having a hand held monitor really helps, and comes in handy on set too. I have a smallHD focus 7 in my hands. it has a built in teredek bolt 500 receiver. on the camera is a smallHD cine7 with built in bolt 500. I still need a haircut haha. let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks man I appreciate it ! I’ll look into it!
Lecgoooooo
😊😊
Do you use or find value in an analogue director’s viewfinder? Or see it as more of a luxury?
I definitely think there is value in it. But.. I had one on a recent shoot and didn’t use it once, despite wanting to. Cadrage is just so much faster.
Next video: Finding the UA-cam Camera Assistant
😂😂 she is very elusive.
don't worry folks, he was looking through his eye
:)
Is there any notable difference between Cadrage and Artemis?
Someone just commented here that they like cadrage better. It’s been a while since I used it, but I am not familiar with the major differences.
Giving me Arrival vibes at the 2:13 mark 😅
I mean I’ll take it. Arrival is a major inspiration for me. While a lot of projects aren’t able to commit to that level of darkness, I keep pushing. It’s a great movie and even greater lesson on exposure.
Hi! What is the song you used? Thx
hi the song that repeats a lot in the video is war paint by Ardie Son. Licensed from audiio.com
what camera did u buy:)
:)
you will see :)
which camera do you use?
For this, I used the Alexa
Can you make a video on how to email sponsor?
are there any specific questions you have that I could answer here? also feel free to join the discord. there's a link in one of my previous videos.
Just an fyi. I bought cadrage becuase of this video. Tell them they owe you a cut 😂
But forreal you should put a download link and see if you can get some affiliate cash for your work and recommendation.
They owe me! Haha. I don’t think they do affiliate codes!
Someone should just curate all your footage from these youtube videos, make it into a film & submit to a festival.
😂 I give you permission
greeting from iran🤍
Who is this guy? Kinda cute 😏
i farted during this video.
anything in particular that made you do that?
@@BlaineWestropp1 willpower
$10 on hair will be cut in the next video 🤣
lol commented this before you said, need a haircut, damn im good 😆
Hahah you know it
so..... wait..... bloke is making movies for years now. he's obviously good at it. so.... 1+1 equals 16k subs on youtube? the fack?
some noobs get a million subs with just being annoying brats....
what a world. I think your skills are proper, I'm stealing whatever trick and tip I can. thanks for that. but dude, try to get those subs up, this just looks weird. is it youtube algorithm trying to play hard to get? what's going on?
Slow and steady.
