People really thought Philippines didn't try to be neutral. when Philippines took the neutral stance China built artificial islands with military bases inside Philippine waters. if it was any other country it would have already started a war but Philippines tried talking to China only to be ignored. the only time China listens is when Philippines involve USA in the talks. at the end of the day with or without US, Philippines was already a target of China since the beginning.

US doesn't build any military bases in the Philippines but they have given access to military bases of the Philippines.
Basically the U.S are using Philippine Army bases, yes there are being build but the Philippine Army has full control of it. It is different military bases of the US where basically military bases of the US before acted as like a embassy where they have full control of it.
I am a Filipino and ive seen many non Filipino misunderstood why Philippines allow the US to be in the Philippines and to have bases. Philippines are doing it for its own interests and not for the U.S or Taiwan.

The Philippines has no choice since they have a Mutual Defense agreement with the U.S.
An attack on the Philippines or an attack against the U.S. forces would bring war to both countries against the aggressor country.
So even if Philippine President says the Philippine bases housing American forces cannot be used against Red China if it invades Taiwan.
He forgot that the Mutual Defense agreement would be invoked by the U.S.
and they will use all their dispersed forces housed in Philippine military bases against Red China in Taiwan.
The Philippines has no choice but to let the U.S. forces use the bases
since if U.S. is in war against Red China then the Philippines is also at war already against Red China.

Something not mentioned in the video and not understood by a lot. The Philippines was trying very hard to appease China for 6 whole years under Duterte. He went against the US and pretty much was a lap dog to the Chinese. This DID NOTHING to even slow or lessen Chinese incursion, bullying, harassment, and territorial expansion. In fact, they just kept doubling down.
Simply put, if this move from the Philippines surprises you, then you've been largely unaware of what has been happening for a decade now in the Philippine Sea. The Philippines is not "caught in the crossfire", the US was the one invited to this party. Which it gladly, for its own interests, jumped in. China loves acting surprised by this because it helps to paint the image that the US is the aggressor here and that China totally weren't the one that caused the Philippines to lean towards the US for help.

Then let them have it, thats a very small price to pay for young men, women, children that will be dying. Pride is a Sin. @@AFGuidesHDAs a Chinese in Southeast Asia who had a Chinese education and was brought up to be proud of our chinese heritage, my country had a look east policy since late 90s early 00s. If US wanted a military base on our islands, we would politely tell them to eff off. If they wanted us to in anyway alter our trade and diplomatic relations with China, we would tell them to pound sand.
China was friendly and never threatening. We were happy to conduct trade and diplomatic relations as equal partners. We had a favourable view of a resurgent China. The Beijing Olympics was really something we were so proud of.
And then the current XiJinPing Wolf Warrior cadre came into power and we saw the not so subtle shift in China's disposition.
They no longer conduct trade and diplomatic relations with us as equal partners. They know they can take what they want, when they want, and are not afraid to let you know it. They are not known to overtly threaten, but are more given to holding a dagger to you under cloak while careful to maintain a smile when facing you.
They employ bullying, cajoling, bribery, blackmailing, coersion and actively subvert our political information space to their own ends. All mistakes the USA made in days past.
They have since forcefully took our internationally recognized (or at least disputed) islands, unilaterally enforced their own version of redrawn international borders, and even blew up some of our fishing boats and detained our fishermen.
And we could do nothing about it.
Now, we openly welcome the USA to help us stand up to this backyard bully.
Until you have been threatened by a expansionist neighbour in your backyard, you will not understand how unnerving it is.
China's own conduct has caused us to forget about our Look East policy.
For some of their misadventures, we are thankful that the US has wielded their dominant military might with some semblance of self-restraint on the world stage.
I cannot honestly say that the current Chinese leadership would show the same restraint had they been the pre-eminent military force of the world. They would likely well be another Russia.

@ 2:55 the US left the Philippines in 1992 because of the 1991 catastrophic volcano damage to to the bases and the US Congress did not want to spend money repairing the damage. Plus, the US' lease to those bases were expiring in early 1992 anyway, so they left, not because the Philippines "did not want them anymore".

The higher acceleration and *much* higher deceleration are a significant burden on sustainment. For this reason, even carrier-capable aircraft prefer operating from land bases whenever possible.

Alot more things are going to happen to retire a particular bird than how many times it landed and what it landed on. Maneuvering to avoid a SAM or air to air missile will do more to stress an airframe mission after mission than what you propose. However in peace time it is something to consider long term.

Plus China is already running short on manpower, literally, thanks to their blindingly stupid 1 child policy that means there are not enough women alive today. If China invaded Taiwan, whether we the filipinos like it or not,we get involved,
Several of our Northernmost Islands will get occupied by the PLA if war breaks out between China and Taiwan,
Our gov't makes the decision, allowed the US forces to have(additional) EDCA sites and in turn US will help us in our modernization efforts since we are shifting from internal defense to external(territorial)defense

A perceptive view. The Philippines will fight besides the US, it is a given. Which will mean the Philippines will be at war with China. The Philippines will be the Ukraine equivalent in Asia. Taking that view, the Philippines better allocate more resource and men to that war now. Hopefully the Philippines will do as well as Vietnam.
And I agree that China will take the islands in the north and even Pahlawan, and then do what Russia is doing to Ukraine, bomb Manila, all the logistics centres and bases. Like Ukraine, China will try to destroy Philippines economy. ASEAN and Southern Philippines will probably see a huge influx of Philippines war refugees, potentially the Communist and the MLNF might be reactivated due to the change in status quo and potential arms support from China.
If the Philippines takes this course of action, it needs to prepare seriously.

Another thing to take note is that with land bases, the US can use its F22s for air defense. The F22s are vastly superior air superiority fighters than the F35s which are mainly air-to-ground fighters, but are more expensive and are incompatible with carriers. F22s will play a role in repelling China's air-superiority fighters in Taiwan and the Philippines as well.
