My buddies and I use to play Jack Nicklaus golf on the Nes as a drinking game. Its so hard. We played so much the game became easy and i could finish under par. I actually love that game
I remember me and a buddy rented it and played skins game against Jack. Jack won or tied every skin for 17 holes until my buddy buried a monster putt to win the 18th. That might be the biggest celebration I've ever seen or done in video games. That game was tough.
In the mid 1990's when my grandad grew too old to spend an entire Sunday on the golf course, my parents bought him a SNES one christmas with a selection of golf games. the original PGA Tour and Pebble Beach Golf Links were the ones I remember. You're right, PGA Tour was a lot of fun to play and we spent many afternoons on the virtual fairways at the likes of Sawgrass. Pebble Beach Golf Links was a lot more difficult and much more 'sim' like, but the graphics were stunning and the music infectious. Great video, thanks for bringing back some of those memories!
HAL's Hole in One Golf and Irem Skins Game are my favorite SNES golf games. But YES, Kirby's Dream Course is definitely something you can't go wrong with. The best part about Irem Skins Game is the music.
Isnt Hal’s game effectively the official Nintendo/Mario Golf game we never got for SNES? The NES has ‘Golf’ and Open Tournament Golf both developed by HAL and more specifically the programming genius that was Satora Iwata. And it looks like he did Hal’s Hole in One Golf.
I’m sorry but Golf on NES with fat Mario( or Ossan as he was called early on) was always my favorite golf game as a kid. Plus Shigeru Miyamoto and Hal laboratory’s designed and developed it and I have mad respect for them! The Tiger Woods games were the only other Golf games I played nearly as much as Golf!
Dude, you forgot "Golf Daisuki!: O.B. Club", otherwise known as "I Love Golf!: O.B. Club". It was on the BS-X. It was even fan-translated into English this year! It's similar to Kirby's Dream Course.
@Nathan gamezio Very true. The Arnold Palmer game buried every SNES golf game, and it wasn't even the best golf game on the Genesis. Very good game though, and would have been much better with better putting. Also, the music from that game is forever burned into my brain.
Golf games have a special place in my heart; it was what dad and I used to play most of the times. On the SNES it was the World master's golf, mentioned last, and it wasn't all that bad. But NES Open probably was the most fun we had with any golf game. Plus, Donkey Kong was some kind of cashier =)

Good ol' Nintendo "Golf" for NES, and its successor NES Open Tournament Golf, are easily the best video game golf games to me up until Mario Golf became a thing. Kirby's Dream Course is great, too. Can you tell I prefer ridiculous, over-the-top golf to the real thing? Though those first two are really quite ... "real golf"-y, as realistic as you got in the 8-bit days, and I love them.
'Golf' rules. Been playing that thing since its inception, learning its nuances makes it genius. NES Open is a very nice 'sequel' of sorts with more options, though longer play session with more screens to jump isn't as fun. Uploaded both to my NES Classic... alas zero golf games hack added for my SNES Classic... shame that. Waialae & Pebble Beach should've been at least good.
A great SNES Golf game not featured here is Golf Daisuki! O.B. Club, which was slated for regular release in Japan, but only got a release through Satellaview in the end. It's great fun especially with multiple people.
Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that The Irem Skins Game is based on 2 arcade games in Japan under the name “Major Title”? Not only that, but the arcade and console games play almost exactly like each other!
If you want a 16-bit golf game, go Neo Turf Masters. 8-bit, try Mario Golf on the Gameboy Color. 3D, can't go wrong with Hot Shots Golf or the Pangya games.
“PGA Tour golf” for the SNES is one of the best golf games ever made, the gameplay is effin brilliant ... Even today I play that game, it’s seriously dam near perfect ...
@@evanschmitt2830 The Genesis versions of PGA Tour Golf were far, far superior. Especially the one you mention. It's literally on my phone so I can play it at work.
The super really did struggle with golf titles. Pebble beach on the genesis was jaw-dropping considering the hardware, and the ps1 (especially jpn) and saturn owners got spoiled for golf titles early in both systems lifespans. Tecmo golf on ps1 is still a favorite. Good video!!!
We are multiplayer game collectors, and even I (Egg) can't get the others to play the golf titles of the 8- and 16-bit era with me. The oldest traditional golf game that I can regularly find someone to play (without resorting to bribery, trickery, or cashing in on a favor) is Links 2003. Kirby's Dream Table -- same gameplay except applied to pool -- would have been a pretty cool title. I never too any Kirby game seriously until I played Dream Course at a friend's house. I still play it regularly to this day. One of my top 20-30 favorite games of all-time across all platforms.
Yeah, 8 and 16-bit couldn't give you a good enough view of the course. My favorite golf games are the Mario Golf series for Gameboy Color and GBA - haven't played the "big brothers" on N64 and NGC, though. Also Golf Story on Switch, with its kooky story, side content and characters. Looking forward to Sports Story and the new Switch Mario Golf.
You forgot Golf Daisuki - Out of Bounds Club, which might be the most fun golf game on the system, since it's multiplayer focussed midget golf where you can troll your friends by hitting their ball so it falls in the water and you win.
I think what screwed up the SNES golf games was trying to use Mode 7 to scroll the course when you hit the ball. It seems to be tough to get the speed of the Mode 7 scrolling just right so it matches the speed the ball should be travelling, and the end result is shots that hang in the air *waaaaaay* too long... (Might be why the Genesis faired better, come to think of it; they just used plain old rasterized line-scrolling...)
Pebble Beach no Hatou New: Tournament Edition is absolutely stunning - thanks to SA 1, the graphics and gameplay are top notch. I just have no idea what all the menus mean.... 😐 Nevertheless, it's a lot of fun to play a few holes! Greetings from Germany
To me PGA tour makes it hard to hit the ball straight. I recommend irem skins game, sometimes called major title instead. You have to to click on the bottom screen with a certain button. I can't remember if it's 'A' or 'B' or X or Y. Then the selection is highlighted on the bottom of the screen. Putting is much more reasonable as it takes just a decent amount of skill to make par most of the time, but it's not too easy. You can also Bogey once in a while as well as birdie. That's why I recommend this game. On the neo Geo ,' neo turf masters is also very good.I have played a lot of golf games in my time and most were very impractical in either accuracy on the swing meter or when putting causing your score to go into the stratosphere.
