Sometimes when I go to my local cemetery I go to the veterans section and say their names aloud . It just seems important to say to me , they are not forgotten . I know crazy right ?
I was watching this while baby sitting 2 kids & at the end one said,"He forgot his cammra! He's driving off without his cammra!" They don't miss a trick. I thought I'd share that funny moment.
Matt, if you take plain flour & rub it on a headstone, it doesn't hurt the head stone & washes off with rain, then you can see the writings on the head stones much clearer. When letterings in a headstone are cut into the stone, to bring out the writings of a loved one's headstone, first cover & protect the head stone with newspaper useing tape, leaving just the writing showing. Then where the writing is roll on accupple of lite layers of brown molasses letting the coats dry inbettween coats. This makes the paint around the lettering come off alot easyer. Then take a can of spray paint (color your choice) & lightly spray accupple of coats on, drying inbettween & don't let the paint run. When fully dry take a scrapper & rag & gently scrape off the paint leaveing the paint in the lettering. It comes off fairly easy & doesn't hurt the stone. Then take off the newspaper & use accupple buckets of water & wipe down the headstone. The lettering will very clearly be seen once again & really look nice. It takes time & effort but you can be proud of the results & your loved ones headstone shows that that person or persons are really being cared for. My father died in 1976 & his headstone looks brand new the way it turned out & you can clearly read it. (Love ya dad💖)
@@karenmessinger9609 do not ever use flour or molasses or a hard bristled brush to clean a stone. Brush should be similar to toothbrush bristles. Flour and molasses expand when they get wet. You'll never get all of the flour or molasses off because it collects in the crevices and if the stone is porous, it will collect in those "pores" and deteriorate the stone over time. The ONLY products that should be used are Wet & Forget or D2. Never use anything but those products and a soft bristled brush. The stones may look great when you're done cleaning them with those other products, but it WILL deteriorate them over time. No bleach, vinegar, lemon products, nothing acidic at all. Just D2 or Wet & Forget.
@@irisheyesofbelfast Thank you. I will take your advice & use one of the products you mentioned. I want to do my grandmother's when I make it back to Ore. Can't have her here anymore to love on but I can do it by keeping her stone nice.
My grandmother and grandfather are buried in McCrary Cemetery, a little country cemetery in Northwest Missouri, between the towns of Hamilton and Gallatin, MO. Kind of a tough place to reach, you almost need 4wd. And don't even think about it when it's muddy. Anyway, I found it a fascinating place as a kid. Some of the people buried there were born in the 1700's. Early pioneers of Missouri. Most of the headstones are in good shape. I haven't been back there to visit in years, need to make the trip before my time is up.
Very nice find, Matt. That little childs grave with the styro foam marker just pulls at the heart strings. I do hope someone's able to eventually put up a more permenant marker so this little ones memory is preserved. Over all the cemetery is not in too bad shape, at least someone is still mowing and decorating. Thanks for sharing and all you do to bring us these awesome videos, be safe.
Thanks Matt for this video about the Very Old Hidden Graves and Vault on a Hill | Historic Civil War Vets I really enjoyed it and thanks again God Bless .

I loved this video this is awesome..do you see any graves with pictures ? Even old graves ?..I just love the pictures it makes it so much more personalized
If you get word of this comment if you can go to Livingston Tennessee, l love to explore graveyards and there is one off highway 111, the turn is across the road from huddle house restaurant and there are so many civil war graves and people are still putting Confederate flags on some. Something l never saw before were civil war graves that had slabs, laid up against each other like the old civil war tents, a stick with a tarp draped over. The graveyard is on the property of a nice little Methodist church. Families are buried there also and a father and mother buried 5 children, just a couple of yrs, a part in age, so tragic.
I sometimes wonder if overgrown sections like in this cemetery are due to lack of funds from not having recent burials in those sections. Sometimes sadly, employees won't go beyond what they are paid to do, so if the cemetery only has the money to maintain 3/4 of the cemetery, they may make the sad decision to leave some areas to grow over. And employees aren't obligated to pitch in their own money to clear out the growth. I feel I personally would do as much as I could for free or out of pocket to help out the graves to be accessible, but it is just sad to see. Some local cemeteries around me are asking for help with funding to keep some older cemeteries maintained as, they just don't have as many burials anymore.
I am new to watching your videos and am enjoying them. Have you ever been over to Eastern Cemetery in Louisville, KY? I've heard so much about it. Just curious.
If you're finding obscure graveyards, why can"t you go to the hardware store buy 5 gallons of "Wet and Forget" and a pump sprayer. Dilute the solution to specifications, and spray the stones. "Wet and Forget" was formulated to clean all tombstones/grave markers, even delicate marble, and you don't even to have to touch the stone! It works with the weather elements, I.e., rain, and slowly cleans the stone in 3-6 month"s time with no damage to the stone. Stop talking about "someone doing something." YOU ARE THE SOMEONE! Show how easy cleaning can be. SAVE OLD GRAVEYARDS, they're history written in stone.
Hey Matt! Sorry for my naivety, but in Australia vaults and mausoleums aren't all that common. At 10.10 you find a vault with two rings. Is this like an underground room that you would walk down into? Sorry, I don't understand the purpose of an underground vault.
Hey Alex, here in Germany a vault is normaly for family burials. Under the plate is a room where is enough space for several coffins. So if a family member past away the plate is lifted the coffin is lowered into the vault and is closed again. Greetings from germany

That was truly great! Thanks for climbing that big hill for us! Amazing how those old gravestones have held up!
They placed rocks to mark graves that are older than headstones, there are a lot of them here in the South where I am.
Great video Matt, always interesting, where some of these Cemeteries are, in the middle of nowhere sometimes, great job.
Just found your channel. I was so excited as I love old graveyards and headstones.

Aw that's so sad. Separating the burials from the tombstones could be disruptive to those resting there. Shame it was done.
Amazing find. I think of the history behind these people and the ones who loved them. Thanks for the video
You are one BRAVE DUDE!
I'm curious if you've made a list of where you visited ? This is amazing to see...I saw 12th indiana calvary who I believe was at Wilderness. WOW!

The cemetery I take care of has people that fought in the black hawk battle
Excellent job, just wish you'd slow the camera down as you scan over some stones. I find myself freeze framing trying to pick up some details.
The head stones that have the shield are union soldiers, confederate soldier head stones do not have the shield but the top of the stone is pointed
Very cool video!
Nice one Matt.

Awesome.

would you please tell me.is a person buried in front of the marker or behind-thank you

Slow down a bit

Your videos are great, but I have a question. Is it possible that your vocabulary is rstricted to the word "actually"?
I didn't see a vault on the hill
