3 bulging discs with annular fissures 3 compression fractures recovering slowly, its a process of mm but patience and hope are what people need so good on you
You May only have 5000 subscribers, but you have probably seriously changed the lives of a large proportion of those people, quality > quantity of impact on the world
Thank you man, shit is depressing. I gave up on life and treatment completely and lived the last year in darkness. Now I'm getting motivation to finally get this fixed.
Can i ask, i started recovery felt stronger again but pain went back and depression went to a 100. Does that sht happen “normally” cuz im in a darkplace myself.
Thanks for the upload! I really get irritated when chiropractors or doctors lack the understanding/severity of a disc herniation. I would not wish it upon anyone to endure. Thanks for spreading the word!
Suffering with a bad flare up right now, having searched for so long and seen 3 doctors, this is the most well put together explanation of what the underlining cause is. Well done, thank you!
Hi Remi and all others who have herniated discs and in pain. I have an l-5, s-1 severe disc bulge and had excruciating sciatica pain down one leg then the other leg. Most often I could not lay down without severe leg pain, so was getting very little sleep. I was sure I was going to have surgery. I took many pain relievers and had a week of oral steroids which I believe helped, and had one acupuncture session and three chiropractic sessions, which also helped a little, but now my pain is about 75% relieved!! I believe this remarkable healing is mostly because of your number five: I began supplementing with vitamins that help nerve damage: B-12, B-6, B-1, B-2, magnesium, fish oil, and other essentials including vitamin C & D. I use to walk 5 to 7 miles several times per week, before my disc herniation. I have began walking again and can walk about 2 miles. I believe as you say, if I stay consistent on an exercise program that is specific to my injury, I will continue to heal. I'm about to begin inversion therapy which I believe will further my healing. I am so happy I did not agree to surgery before I had the results I have now. Although I still have a ways to go, I am considering canceling my appointment for an epidural steroid injection. I believe I may do better without the possible side effects, especially now that my pain is so much better. Everyone take your B vitamins and supplement other nutrients you may be missing as well! Great video Remi!! Thank you!!
Baene VEVO it’s hell! You are not alone . The pain , there is no running form it, no bargaining with it, no rest with out pain meds . It’s hell and you are not alone
Watching this almost made me cry, been suffering from back pain for almost 6 years now, havent been able to play hockey for almost 6 years now, hockey was my life and love , hopefully someday i will be able to play again and not giving up with this dream, went to many back specialist and they all say i dont need surgery so that means i can fix this, thanks for this video.
Great video and thanks for sharing! I am suffering from a hernia in the L5/S1 that is pushing against the S1, S2, and S3 root nerves. One of the biggest factors in going from walking in a bent over position has been the diet change for me. As I dug deeper into anti-inflammation diets I found that to be a critical first step to beginning to heal! Keep up the great work!
@@boltonlaurie1136 No I have not totally eliminated sugars. However, I have been more strict with consumption of foods that contain sugar. The biggest part of my diet that's changed and offered the greatest help is I've been alcohol free for 5 months. That has by far been the greatest improvement to overall reduction with inflammation for my situation.
@@Preeti-lw9jc Yes, I had surgery a couple years ago. I've been doing fantastic since then. They just did laser removal of the disc portion protruding into the spinal cord.
I'm recovering from a herniated disc that happened 2 weeks ago. The pain is the worst and it's difficult to sleep. Your video is very informative and has given me hope...thank you! 💙
OMG!!!! this is the best hour I've spend on youtube. I have a larger protrusion on L5-S1 been in excruciating pain / sciatica. I had a cortisone shot but im still in pain unless heavy medicated. Thank you Remi for this!!
- Marie No problem Marie, I'm glad this was the best hour you've spent on youtube! Glad the video helped and I wish you all the best to you're continued recovery Marie :)
MariE De Jesus Hi have you managed to recover from your injury I've just started the steroid injections which have helped but still worried about how I can heal completely without surgery
Thank you so much. Youre the first person to mention depression/motivation, which made me realize you actually went through this injury and understand how destroying it can be. Again, thank you. You gave me hope.
I've changed my strategy to what I have been doing based on your advice and made some positive recovery. GREAT Video's Remi keep up all your good work brother
The first 40 minutes I could have skipped, allready adopted those, great advice btw, then it blew my mind about the cold therapy, it didn't make sence to me either and I was doing it but it made my back hurt like hell when I did it, so I'm glad i've got that covered now and the MOST MOTIVATING THING I GOT FROM THIS VIDEO was the last 30 sec of it... That's all I need.
- Nebojsa Thanks Nebosja, glad you enjoyed the video! and yes I scratch my head at time when I see or hear of clinicians prescribing cold therapy or ice for a disc related injury.. doesn't exactly make sense.
Dude!! Great presentation. You have a ton of knowledge and experience on this subject. I hate talking to doctors because I feel like they just want to prescribe pain meds than get you on your way. I'm glad to find out that I already do a lot of good things when it comes to treating my herniated L5. With this additional knowledge you have dropped, I am positive I can heal naturally and get back into the gym :) Thank you so very much for your time and concern. You are a very kind and empathetic person for creating this video. Not only will the information help me, but it will also help my father who suffers from back pain. I can't wait to check out your other videos. Keep up the good work, you are the man!!!!
Thank you so much for the advices you gave through this video. I am suffering from the back pain since 4 years and I am still struggling from the same. The diet thing is the best thing which you cleared in this video and will follow the same. Thank you 🙏🏻
Mate, your videos are all awesome. Thankyou so much for the time and effort you spent to help others. Im recovering from a slipped disc no one else I have paid or found online have been as helpful. Your videos have given me hope for recovery.
Hi, I was just diagnosed with a minor protrusion and bulge of the L4 and L5 discs as well as a 15% endplate wedging of the T6..pretty much messed my back up..i was told a few times over the last month that i had sore muscles but thankfully I had an emergency Dr who understood my history and ordered a CT scan..hence the diagnosis..in the last week since the CT scan, im now seeing a physiotherapist and chiropractor and been doing plenty of spine extension exercises and the pain has become a little more manageable by just knowing what I have to do to get better and this video has given me even more motivation to get better 💪
Every time I'm in abject debilitating pain, I learn and try something new to me in, search of better and safer ways that will get me back to normal again. This time I'm coming across your videos. So, thank you very much, bless your soul.
Hi Remy, thanks for the excellent video. I had problems with my back for a couple of months but kept cycling to work and playing tennis (which I now understand is also a bad move for my back) and picking up my little boy. The pain kept getting worse. 2 weeks ago started doing some yoga, which really flexed my hips and removed the totally stiff back, but the pain in back and hip was still there. After doing some work last weekend in the house on my knees the pain in my back and legs went really terrible and I could only lay down. After seeing some video on the McKenzie method, which is kind of the same way you laid down, I tried that. So laying flat down with some pillows under my chest for a quarter or so, which was kind of painful. But after this, I really felt the centralization effect, pain severely centralized in one point on my back and after half an hour it was gone as well as the pain in my legs. Amazing. That was yesterday and now it feels like I need to really keep my spine in an S-curve, else I feel like the disc is bulging (which feels like it will trigger the pain again). It, however, feels a bit unnatural to hold my spine like this, will my back get used to be in this position? Thanks for the excellent video, it gives me confirmation that I'm doing the right thing now. Everybody keeps saying, cycling and so can't hurt, while I now know my body needs to heal first. Good luck to everybody searching for answers for their backpain.
- Hendrik Hi Hendrik, thanks for sharing that and I can totally relate to you're case, especially in the early stages about you continued to cycle and play tennis and things got worse. When I first hurt my back, I continued to work out and play hockey (mind you I took it a bit a easy), but it made things completely worse to the point we're I was having severe muscle spasms and couldn't sleep. Not a fun thing, but I think we both have learned our lessons you could say lol. As for you're back pain, ya it's hard to say, since I don't know what you're personally dealing with? It sounds like it may be a disc related issue, but it could be a number of things and you'd only really know unless you got a good physical examination done, maybe an MRI or you did you're own research. If are trying to figure out you're back pain, Dr. Stuart McGill is a great resource in my opinion, if you ever get the chance to check out some of his stuff. As for the S-curve that you've mentioned, ya it is a bit unnatural to hold you're spine in that position for a long period of time, but it may be one of the only positions that is helpful or provides relief to you at the moment, which may be needed in order to heal. Anyways, ya just a general tip though, try to avoid any pain inducing activities as much as possible as this will prevent you from putting yourself in any further positions that may cause pain and you'll ultimately allow your'e body to heal. Hopefully this helps Hendrik and I wish you all the best to a speed recovery :)
Thanks so much for your reply Remi. Yeah, you go on because everyone says that pain in the back will be better when working out and the advice to lay down is old school... Amazing how you reply on each comment btw, really appreciate this! Also watching all your video's right now, soo helpfull. My fysiotherapist said it was a bulging disc, only this was before it got so much worse, felt like a herniated one when the pain was worst. Will have an MRI in two weeks, hopefully that will clear some things up, but for now I am positive that by giving it time to heal it can heal, as this is the first time in months I have less pain, when taking a lot of rest and laying on my belly, not ideal, but hey, I am a programmer, can also work from home, laying on my belly, lol. Thanks Remi.
- Hendrik No problem Hendrik! Yes, I try to take the time to respond to everyone as best as possible since it people like you guys who actually care about my video's and keep this channel going you can say. As for it be a bulging or herniated disc, ya you won't know for sure unless you get an MRI to really determine the details of you're disc injury (if you have one). And yes staying positive is one of the best things you can do, especially during a difficult time like this :)
Just a quick update, for if anyone experiencing some symptoms reads this. Yesterday went to another chiropractor which immediately checked my SI joint which was fixed on the right side. All my problems were on the left side, and according to him, the left side is going to compensate the fixation on the right side, which leads to trouble on this side. This fixation can happen because of for example a fall, which I did last year: the saddle pen of my bicycle broke and I fell over my handlebar. He did some work to open this right side of my SI-joint and today I walk so differently! It now feels like my right hip is weak, possibly because it was always fixed. I am soo happy, a plausible cause was found for all the pain on the left side. It makes sense. My disc can still be herniated, the MRI in a week will show. Let ya know.
- Hendrik Thanks for sharing that update buddy and to glad to hear you're walking better! That's to hear about that chiropractor and I look forward to hearing about you're MRI soon !
Remi Sovran's - 6 step approach in short starts at 26:08 **This approach may not work everyone as there are severe cases that may require surgery. 1. Stay motivated: Disc injuries are a roller coaster ride and take time to heal, 6-months. 2. Identify and remove the pain inducing actives or triggers 3. Identify pain-free positions and practice them as much as possible. 4. Sleep: Sleeping aids recovery. Focus on getting a good night sleep. Take pain killers if you need to. 5. Addressing Nutritional Deficiencies: Protein/Mineral/Vitamin/Water Deficiency. Avoid smoking and anemia (red bleed cell production) 6. Exercise Prescription: Consult an an expert ie Physical Therapist, Chiropractor, Strength/Performance Coach to address weaknesses, instability, muscular strength.Avoid exercising causing pain. - Walking/Mobility
This is an excellent video. The physical therapy caused more problems and after several months of strategy I have been work on strategy 2 and 3 . This reinforced how important those are.
Great presentation and video I've suffered a "Bulging Disc" for 13 yrs tried chiropractors, they work but it's always temporary I now am finally going to get injections plus follow your information because I'd like to get back to Deadifting and the front squat i'm 51 years old and stubborn I wont stop training unless It's 100% impossible.
I feel obligated to post a comment on channels like this. The things that will help improvement. If the injury is recent, take anti inflammatories and rest for a few days. Lots of water during that period. If it’s a bad disc injury the first 3-6 months will be hell. Extreme limitations and pain through your back and down one or both of your legs. The inflammation in your back will be crazy so you must eat as natural as possible. I went 95% plant based. Occasionally eat quality beef. Turmeric and ginger r my best friends. Completely stop bending if you can. It just further injures it and intensifies the pain and agony. It’s a long road. Start with walking. Lots and lots of walking. If you can tolerate therapy, start with Superman’s. Every herniation is different so you will continuously have to check your progress. Early on it will feel like you might be going backwards so dial it back any time that happens. Total respect is a must for this injury. Slowly progress and be your own judge. Have faith. One of the toughest battles of our life. Commit to it and learn. Spread your knowledge.
Thankyou so much for this detailed info. I have a herniated disc since 1-1/2 months. I was losing hope of recovering but it seems it takes time and these 6 steps make a lot of sense. What I really need to do is figure out what triggers the pain. And avoid that plus the nutrition and sleep bit 😊
This video is quite old but it points out a lot of ideas that doctors and chiropractors haven’t told me before especially hydration and nutrition. Thank you cery mich I will definitely try this, gives me hope.
Hello Remy, Thank you so much for the video! Something that I really needed at the moment. It's been a year, since I have the same disc injury like you had. The pain is incredible, and I was loosing motivation, but now I'm again motivated to fight it. I watched all your videos, and still not sure about exercises. Do you have like a plan of exercises that you can share? That would help a lot, since the plan that one physiotherapist gave me made my injury even worse... Thank you so much for the video and for inspiring me during this really difficult time both physically and psychologically... really I just want to get back to the gym as soon as possible...Thank you again and keep up the good work!
- Aurimas No problem Aurimas, glad you enjoyed the video :) As for exercises to share, it's really hard since everyone's case is going to be different like a mentioned. For instance, some exercises will work for some people, whereas other won't. However, from a general stand point, usually I may suggest and follow Dr. McGill's approach which involves starting with something like a McGill crunch, side plank regression, Bird-Dog regression and then may be add something like side lying hip abduction or clams into the mix as well if an individual can tolerate it. Here is a list of those exercises: McGill Crunch: ua-cam.com/video/aEBcFy4RQkY/v-deo.html Bird Dog: ua-cam.com/video/ZUt-sPWZw8s/v-deo.html v=ZHVVZgakBB0 Side Plank Regression: ua-cam.com/video/u3wGXvspE4c/v-deo.html Clams: ua-cam.com/video/EF0-n8DseSE/v-deo.html Side Lying Hip Abduction: ua-cam.com/video/Ypz8p1v6e6g/v-deo.html Note: If any of these exercises cause pain, then this is an indication you're not ready for this progression or exercise yet and you should discontinue the exercise until the pain comes down. Hopefully this helps :)
- SilverssThanks silvers! Interesting to hear that and I appreciate you sharing that. Just out of curiosity did you have any other underlying issues? Could of been other factors at play...
i pretty much had a major bulging disc. with pain so bad i wanted to kill myself. heat packs didn't work . for me the heat pack only worked when it was on as a calming effect . cant keep the heat on all day everyday for every single second . when i removed it pain came back instantly with a vengeance. even warm showers was so painfully mind blowing .
- SilverssInteresting silvers and I'm sorry to hear about that. I hope things have gotten better and improved for you now :)Also,I agree the heat can't be on for every single second of the day. So, essentially when you used the heat it helped as a calming effect, but as you removed it, the pain came back as super severe? That sounds very similar to what was going on with me. Heat was essentially just a temporary method of pain relief/calming effect and alternative to pain relieving medication and in 'theory' should help with recovery as well, but like you said you're can't be using it every single second of the day, which is a limitation.
I should have elaborated on the warm shower pain . I dont know why but when i entered the shower and that warm water hit my body the pain became 10x worse it was like that sprinkling hot water was making my already damaged nerves feel everything . My muscles would basically clench up like steel . Im doing much better today . Im actually still recovering. Ive been sleeping on the floor for 3 months now and i will continue to sleeping on the floor. Sleeping on the floor has also been a major improvement for correcting my spine . Im also wearing a dds 300 spinal belt and doing Mckenzie half push ups. Ct scan and mri identified that i had a s1 slipped disc . Some of my other discs had signs of disc degeneration . Since then ive been improving my diet and nutrition and drinking plenty of water
Thanks for this helpful video. I have been out of action from training and hockey for about 2 months. I can't imagine being away for over 2 years. Glad you covered the mental side because it is a long tedious process to try and get back. Looking forward to gaining more insight looking at your channel.
Yay I just found this...I'm a LVN of 33 years whom was just notified this is what's going on with my back now...whew....I have been using my 2 yoga balls to sit on both sides of my home and it helped me so much!!!!!!! It's been 4 months with pain up to 9.5 and now I'm at 1. Every nite heal yourself Meditations with painless acupuncture.
.....Thank you (side note / make your own gelatine guys and drink kefir, Thank God I'm healed now but I cannot stress enough apart from the advice in this video nutrition and a position that allows your disc to reabsorb , for me I found by accident was a 45 degree backrest on my bed , a hard horizontal bed made my condition worse , I wish I could share my whole story and maybe I will if anyone would like to hear then let me know / God bless you all 😊💕
Hi, i'm doing some research on how to treat a herniated disc because i'm suffering with a lot of pain, mi problem is with the L4, L5, i have consulted with many doctors and they say that i need surgery but i don't want that because i heard that the pain gets worse after a surgery, i had read your comment and i would like to know how are you doing and what are you doing to treat your problem , please let me know your answer and share your history
Very informative and encouraging! I have a ruptured disc between L2-L3 that's pinching or touching the nerve causing weakness in mainly my right leg quadricep and numbness on the calf too. I hope to be able to fully recover strength and feeling thru therapy and avoid surgery. Thank you for giving me hope.
Kenneth- How are you doing now? Were you able to avoid surgery? I am experiencing the pain weakness and numbness too, and it's very concerning. I hope you are doing well! :) Please let me know what helped you if you are now doing good- appreciate it.
informative as usual :) thx Remi for such amazing efforts! glad to hear u made ur way through it ... I've been following u since the very 1st video... tried to contact u before but failed... just need ur advice about my injury
- Basma Thank you Basma and I'm glad to hear you've been following me since day 1! That's very cool to hear! As for contracting me, I sincerely apologize Basma as I may have just missed you're message. Feel free to reach out anytime again and I'll be on notice for you're message and I'll be happy to chat with you :)
this is very helpful video! thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. i'm gonna go ahead try to watch your other videos since i got a herniated disc recently L4-L5 while lifting weight... well i'm already getting better but your video seems its full of knowledge!!
Hi, it is Great to see a video made by a person suffered from disk injury and recovered ; I am a marathon runner for 20 years , now suffering from disk bulge . Your video gave me lot of hopes to recover from the damage. Can I know how much time it took for you to recover.
- SivaHi Siva, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I'm sorry to hear you're disc injury, as it's never an easy injury to overcome. As for my recovery, it took nearly a year and half to 2 years to be pain free and really get my life back. However, do keep in mind, my first 6-7 months were a waste as result of all the failed treatments I received from dotor's, chiro's, physical therapists, etc., and it wasn't until after that mark that I did my own research and rehab that I started getting back. However, I believe that if I had to go through the same injury again with same severity, I could overcome it potentially in six months with what I know now (at least I like to think that way). Hope that answers you're question, but the key thing is that everyone's recovery is going to be different in terms of length :)
Good info! l just started physical therapy last week ,I am starting a new healthy diet, and moving from ice to heat. I iced this morning for pain but thanks to your video I am going to stop this today. I , like you have become very discouraged with doctors and chiropractors because I am learning more for UA-cam. My physical therapy so far has been very minimal. They basically sent me out the door with a sheet of paper with for super minimal stretches. What do I tell them to get them to get them to help me properly? Thank you for sharing your very useful information. When I get better I want to help people too. Maybe even help educate the doctors and chiropractors. Alot of them are just making things worse for people.
- Stevopanoplois Thanks Stevopanoplois and no problem :) Ya, in my opinion, that's never good practice whenever some sort of health care practitioner sends you out the doctor with a just a piece of paper with a handful of stretches to do... especially when you may be paying them 50-100 dollar for 30-50 minute sessions. I know this happened to me once when I saw some sort of rehab specialist that my family doctor referred me too. Mind ya I didn't have to pay, but it was a quite a piss off when it took me roughly a month or two to see him and then only for him to give me a sheet with stretches to do and suggest that i don't have a spinal disc injury and rather it's muscle related. I don't know, but it seems as some health care practitioner's are just not keeping with their educating nowadays and it can be very frustrating. However, that's not the case for all, as I will say their are some excellent health care practitioner's out there, but they are just very hard to find sometimes. Anyways, glad to hear you're starting a new healthy diet and moving to heat, as that should make a big difference in the long run! I wish you all the best Stevo and I hope that when you do get better, you can start educating other people out, as it seems we need more people like that today :)
Hi Steve, many healthcare personnel are over-burdened with administrative work that gets in the way of interacting with patients. Many people, including myself, share your frustration. A single-payer healthcare system would immensely reduce the administrative burden on our healthcare system, increasing the amount of time spent with patients.
Also try some yoga asanas. Really depends the person condition, but slow backbends such as cobra pose, is really helpful. And of course, in yoga, the postures leads to listen the body, so nutrition is the next step. First time I did it, I was very cautious, and for the first weeks, I was getting frustrated, but after that, I've recovered real fast. sometimes I don't even remember the pain. Final note: All this allows me to have a normal free pain day, and do some bending work, but if I do a lot, the pain comes back. So it's a balance.
- DanielWhen it comes to yoga, ya it really is going to depend on the person's condition (like you mentioned) as some poses may be good, whereas other may make things worse. Also, glad to hear that you've made a recovery, as that is always nice to hear! And lastly, as for things done in balance, ya that's normally how things should be when it comes to a lot of things in life, whether that's working out, training for something or developing a proper recovery strategy, etc. :)
Have you ever heard of osteopathic medicine? Here are the tenets of osteopathy: 1 - The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit. 2 - The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance. 3 - Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated. 4 - Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function. Your approach to your own healing was osteopathy! You sound like you would be very interested in osteopathy if you do not already know much about it.
- Brett Yes I have and I'm a bit familiar with osteopathy, but must admit haven't looked into too much. However, my approach to healing is holistic. Everything needs to be taken into consideration, because they all play an important in not just recovery, but even performance :)
You may really enjoy A.T. Still's autobiography, or any of his other books. There is also a great biography called "From the Dry Bone to the Living Man" by John Lewis. You can get the biography cheaper directly from the author last I checked.
amazing video and info- you should become a medical doctor. Thank you. I have multiple lumbar bulging disc( and now 3 cervical c3-4-5 herniations- 53 yrsold- still workout 5 days a week
- Jimmie Thanks Jimmie! Ya, definitely thought about it, but I don't know if it's for me, or at least going through the process that it takes. My interest is and has been always around mainly sports training and nutrition/physiology :) Glad to hear you're still able to workout with all those herniated discs though as that sounds pretty encouraging :)
J J , I have Adhesive Arachnoiditis which is basically clumped, swollen nerve roots. It’s very painful 24/7. I can only do mild stretching exercises and walking, biking on stationary bike and swimming, In 2015, I was diagnosed after going through physical therapy, epidural steroid injections, and finally surgery on L5S1 herniated disc that was squishing the nerve roots. A week ago today I believe that same disc reherniated! Any more surgery or injections will cause more scar tissue! Any advice
Your story video and this video is outstanding! I'm suffering through the same exact injury. I purchased a massage table and the book McKenzie Method Treat Your Own Back and walk daily along with doing the stretches in the book. Like you mentioned in your video you must commit mentally to get better and do the "work". I am going to get an epidural steroid injection which hopefully will "speed" up my recovery. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for the video Remi, I feel this is the most informative video I’ve seen. I believe I developed a disc problem while having too significant of an arch while bench pressing. This video gives me hope that I can speed up the recovery process. Also are there any foods you believe that support the healing process?
- Condor No problem Condor! And unfortunately, I don't know about enough about nutrition and if there is support for certain foods that support disc healing.
@@RemiSovran thats okay, I imagine fruits and vegetables of different colors and a fish oil/multivitamin is a safe place to start. Also, I've been using a heating pad recently. I've noticed the pain subsiding from my back but remains in my calf when trying to get out of bed. Was this the same case for you?
Well done Remi. I’ve been also suffering from chronic sciatica caused by a herniated disc on both sides. Been everywhere and still can’t fix that. It’s very depressing.
I am ,19 and at home while lifting something I got sharp pain near my buttocks and from then like almost a month has passed i had pain but it becomes very less I started doing back stretches and hanging on bar literally helps me in starting I am not able to stand for long periods of time but in less than a month I feel very good. I also sometimes put ice on that area is it good 👍 but when I walk I feel pain on right side of my spine
I appropriated what you have to say, but you could have said it in a much shorter amount of time. Granted not everyone starts out articulate and to the point, but the information in this video, which is very well informed, could have been covered in less then 20 minutes. It is good to relate to the information as it can provide a different perspective making it easier to assimilate, however when not direct it can foreshadow the message and have an opposite effect. A good indicator of this is "um." Count how may time you said "um" in this video. It is not a bad word but it is an indicator that you are pausing to collect your thoughts prior to addressing a point. It also makes it easy to become distracted on future points rather than the current topic points. Most studies have shown that repetitively saying "Um" also lowers the confidence of the listener in the speaker's reliability and understanding of the topic. You have a good message with well informed explanations, however the nearly 100 negative reviews suggest that the length and presentation of that message could use some work. Talking to a group of people or lecturing should feel as fluid as talking with an old friend. It should provide them with the information, tips, and safety of the subject along with a short person perspective so that the message becomes the primary take away. Keep trying as your efforts are appreciated, but try associating the camera as if it were one of your old friends or a family member. Don't be afraid of making multiple takes of a video until it feels comfortable and sound natural. Much like lifting weights it simply takes practice.
- Joshua Appreciate the feedback. I have worked on my presentation skills a lot since. And I'll admit, after watching this video, there could be much room for improvement. Live and learn. Thanks, for the constructive feedback. Not often do I get a comment like this without someone saying super nasty things, so for that I thank you. :)
My MRI report says- 1. Lumbarspondylosis. 2. Diffuse disc bulge at L4-L5 level 3. Posterocentral disc protrusion with posterior annular tear at L5-S1 level. One Dr told me that i have fucked up my back doing all the crazy stuff at the gym and another told me that it's nothing to worry about, MRI is an intensive test and it may find minute details/findings from ur body that has nothing to do with ur pain. So he basically said, no one can expect to have perfect lumbar disc as all our lives we put so much pressure on our spine. But guys, i have been feeling pain only in my lower back region, it doesn't go to my hips, not even to my legs. I can run for 5kms and I don't feel anything. But when it comes to sitting, or doing things while sitting, it bothers me a lot. I mean this is a pain that don't stop me from doing anything, i can still lift weights but i just don't feel comfortable enough. I mean that mindset of feeling 100% fine is not there with me anymore. I feel tight, a strange kind of stiffness, hell i can't even express in words. The focal point is something near sacrum/tailbone area. Can someone help or even relate?
Thanks so much for sharing this. I have L4, L5/S1 bulges. I agree with everything you say. Heat not ice, avoid/minimise what irritates it. Exercises that are suitable, and HOPE, you have given many that, and God bless you for that.
Hi Remy, Great video and content, by far the best I have seen and I have seen alot. I suffer from a small posterior and right paracentral L5/S1 disc protrusion which causes excruciating nerve pain down my right leg and I have been suffering from this for almost 1 year now. Your 6 six steps is exactly what im doing as well as I visit the physio once a week and do regular exercises that decompress my spine as well as the Mackenzie technique which has helped tremendously but i feel like i have reached a plateau where im still feeling pain but not as excruciating as before, Its been like this for a couple of months. Is there anything else you can recommend?
- Francis Great to hear! I'd recommend reading through the book Back Mechanic by Dr. Stuart McGill. You'll find a lot of good information in that book if you haven't already read it. It's one of my top recommended resources :)
Most informative video regarding healing a disc injury imo. Three questions remi :D 1.) does a disc bulge gristle and thus heal over time, or do only fully herniated discs (where the nucleus comes out) gristle??? 2.) once pain free, what's the harm in rushing back to your sport if the pain is gone.... surely the disc has gristled/healed right? Or would it be correct to let it heal for a few more months after becoming pain free? 3.) what's better/worse -wearing a backpack(weighing 3kg roughly) or carrying it like a briefcase and alternating sides to avoid any imbalances? Thanks!!!!!
- Nore Glad you enjoyed the video Nore! As per your questions: 1) For the most part from my understanding is that disc extrusions or sequestration's tend respond the quickest to healing since the nucleus material is exposed outside of the disc. Not saying that they 'heal' quicker per se, but from my understanding their is a greater initial response. However, once the scar tissue as been layed down, they seem to level off. I believe all discs tend to gristle as we age, and it's this gristling effect (caused by physiological changes) reduces people's ability to bear load or move, but they don't experience pain anymore since the discs have under gone so much degeneration (or hardening). 2) Depends.... The disc may not have healed or gristled.. rather the nerves around the discs that were once maybe trapped have adjusted or become free. I think as long as your pain free, cautious about your activity, and maintaining good spine hygiene, you should be fine :) 3) Not sure if one is better then the other. Switching side to side would address any lateral imbalances or at least minimize them (excluding the downward depression which would be not be countered). As far as carrying a backpack.. this may create more imbalances forward/back or vertically. Not really sure if their is a way to ever fully reduce imbalances completely in a daily routine. Hope this helps :)
- Bhushan It was a slow grad and process. Once I got things under control, I started working with strict limitations, and then slowly continued to do more as I got better.
Remi i have degenerative disc disease and disc dessication and also disc buldge and herniated disc my age is 22 I used to do a lot of crunches and bike riding, and this is how i hv developed the pain. I wear a LS belt and do bike riding as of now and be much comfortable while doing it. I m also doing all the core strengthening and extensions exercises. I am able to centralise the pain with it. But the problem is i am not recovering completely. At some point or the other the pain starts suddenly and on some day the pain is fine. I am getting badly demotivated because i love doing workout and because of this my psychology is getting effected. I am just not recovering completely At some point the pain is so intense that the only this which feels better is lying or heating my back. And yes i am confuses about heating or icing the back. My injury is continuing for last 3 months
- Rishi Sorry to hear that man. That' doesn't sound fun. I"d suggest finding a good clinician and/or trainer who specializes in low back pain and can help you with your rehab and training :)
Hey Remi, Thanks for all of this info! I have a question. What if it's impossible to avoid the activities that irritate the injury? The reason being I have to work and there isn't a job on the planet that I know of that won't irritate my back injury. Most jobs require sitting, my biggest irritant. 1/2 hour a day would make me miserable. My current job requires forward and lateral flexion with twisting as well as lots of standing - all irritants. Leaving a job with an injury like this is terrifying to be completely honest. I don't want to end up making less money and still irritating my injury and like I mentioned, I have no idea what I could do that wouldn't irritate my injury. With all that in mind, is it just a matter of limiting irritants to irritate it as little as possible? Will the injury still heal while it's being irritated or do all irritants have to be removed? Thanks!
- YNation "is it just a matter of limiting irritants to irritate it as little as possible? " Yup. That be my answer to anyone with mechanical low back issues. Also, with a proper exercise program that involves core endurance and spine stabilization, you can improve your tolerance to activities like sitting, twisting and bending. "Will the injury still heal while it's being irritated or do all irritants have to be removed?" If you irritate a tissue, it's only going to worse. That's normal and similar to how if you picked at a scab all day, it would never heal.
Hello, I just got my MRI and it says that I have a 3 mm l5-s1 circumstantial disc bulge with mild lower neural foraminal narrowing, central canal is normal. I am having pretty severe discomfort on my central lower back when sitting down or driving.can u explain my situation?any help would be appreciated, since I have stopped working because of it. Thank you.
- Mike I can't specifically explain without a formal movement assessment. However, from the sounds of things and based on the imaging, this would be a case of flexion intolerance. I'd suggest booking an appointment with a McGill Certified Clinician or Practitioner.
Which blood test are the most important to check for Protein / Mineral deficiency? I saw my ferritin is low, but my HB is normal. But maybe something else is causing the slow healing.. Thank you for your help
There is a treatment that I am currently doing that has been helping me very well. It is called non-surgical decompression therapy and it is a computerized table that acts like a traction table, but is way more accurate. Figured I would share this bit of info.
it is a table that angles your back a certain angle to where the herniated disc is, then it pulls your back creating a negative vacuum in your disc to suck back in the disc stuff. Doing this with, TENS threatment, heat treatment, back adjustments and just improving my posture has helped also. I also have done a lot of research on supplements to help the back and to help the pinched nerves. My herniated disc is a little bit more concerning then most since mine is in the center, not on the side. It scares the crap out of me if I have gradual cauda equina crap... so far nothing my doctor says I need surgery for. The supplements I take are l-caritine, alpha-lipoic acid, lions mane mushroom, magnesium, fish oil, b-complex, passion flower, MSM, turmeric, glucosamine sulfate, boswellia extract, scillia, evening premise oil, american scullcap, Bromelain, Quercetin, and creatine. I have had back problems on and off for years, but the past month it has gotten really bad. I have shown great improvement with just 10 treatments, some of the symptoms fluctuate meaning will have good days and bad days. Usually after 15-20 visits the symptoms are all gone and it can take up to 25 to fully heal everything. It also seems like I am a few that knows about this! I want to spread the word about as much as possible, if it were not for this treatment I would for sure be in surgery!
- MrSovrInteresting. I'll have to look into that as I haven't seen a device personally like that. Also, glad to hear though that you're taking a strong imitative to heal you're back. Seems like you're doing a lot of the right things including nutrition, which is great! Keep it up and I hope you can heal you're herniated disc soon :)
you would have to find one at a spinal doctor, chiropractor, or any other spine specialist that has one. The problem tends to be that insurance does not cover the procedure... making the cost go from roughly $1500-$6000. Most are roughly in the $2000 range. You just have to look them up online and find the closest specialist that has one. I was lucky to stumble across mine.
I was involved in a car accident 5 1/2 months ago. I have had back pain every day since but only on the left side. I get spasms often. I almost feel like I have a rubberband in my back. Do these things typical heal themselves after a while?
Many thanks...great video.as said previously. .you are giving hope.I am suffering right now.have mild discs protusion..L2/3,L3/4andL4/5...suffering like hell sometimes..
To all you suffering, don’t give up, you can heal completely.

Thanks for the upload! I really get irritated when chiropractors or doctors lack the understanding/severity of a disc herniation. I would not wish it upon anyone to endure. Thanks for spreading the word!

No problem Nicholas and I couldn't agree more! Glad you enjoyed the upload :)
I’m wondering if chiro is making it worse. Also seeing a rolfer, not impressed yet

Hi it's been three years since you commented this. How are you feeling now?
Thank you!!
Thanks for sharing your story Marla. I wish you all the best :)

How you feeling now pal?
Great video and thanks for sharing! I am suffering from a hernia in the L5/S1 that is pushing against the S1, S2, and S3 root nerves. One of the biggest factors in going from walking in a bent over position has been the diet change for me. As I dug deeper into anti-inflammation diets I found that to be a critical first step to beginning to heal! Keep up the great work!
- Senior
Thanks, Senior! And glad to hear the diet change has helped :)
Did you eliminate fruit? I don’t eat sugar but enjoy pineapple, berries, kombucha etc
@@VAJBerg How are you now?? Did you had surgery??
@@Preeti-lw9jc Yes, I had surgery a couple years ago. I've been doing fantastic since then. They just did laser removal of the disc portion protruding into the spinal cord.

How are you doing now with regards to your back?
The first 40 minutes I could have skipped, allready adopted those, great advice btw, then it blew my mind about the cold therapy, it didn't make sence to me either and I was doing it but it made my back hurt like hell when I did it, so I'm glad i've got that covered now and the MOST MOTIVATING THING I GOT FROM THIS VIDEO was the last 30 sec of it... That's all I need.

Thanks Nebosja, glad you enjoyed the video! and yes I scratch my head at time when I see or hear of clinicians prescribing cold therapy or ice for a disc related injury.. doesn't exactly make sense.
Super inspirational. Broken down in an easy to understand, no nonsense way that makes perfect sense. Great video.
Thanks, buddy! :)
Dude!! Great presentation. You have a ton of knowledge and experience on this subject. I hate talking to doctors because I feel like they just want to prescribe pain meds than get you on your way.

No problem Argyle! :)
- Hendrik
Hi Hendrik, thanks for sharing that and I can totally relate to you're case, especially in the early stages about you continued to cycle and play tennis and things got worse.
- Hendrik
No problem Hendrik!
- Hendrik
Thanks for sharing that update buddy and to glad to hear you're walking better! That's to hear about that chiropractor and I look forward to hearing about you're MRI soon !

Remi Sovran's - 6 step approach in short starts at 26:08
**This approach may not work everyone as there are severe cases that may require surgery.
1. Stay motivated: Disc injuries are a roller coaster ride and take time to heal, 6-months.
2. Identify and remove the pain inducing actives or triggers
Avoid smoking and anemia (red bleed cell production)
6. Exercise Prescription: Consult an an expert ie Physical Therapist, Chiropractor, Strength/Performance Coach to address weaknesses, instability, muscular strength.Avoid exercising causing pain.
- Walking/Mobility

Thanks, for sharing Jason!
@@RemiSovran thank you Remi for offering insight, as well as building a community so we can educate and get stronger through these injuries.

Hello Remy,
Thank you so much for the video!
- Aurimas
No problem Aurimas, glad you enjoyed the video :) As for exercises to share, it's really hard since everyone's case is going to be different like a mentioned.
Here is a list of those exercises:
McGill Crunch: ua-cam.com/video/aEBcFy4RQkY/v-deo.html
Bird Dog: ua-cam.com/video/ZUt-sPWZw8s/v-deo.html
v=ZHVVZgakBB0
Side Plank Regression: ua-cam.com/video/u3wGXvspE4c/v-deo.html
Clams: ua-cam.com/video/EF0-n8DseSE/v-deo.html
Side Lying Hip Abduction: ua-cam.com/video/Ypz8p1v6e6g/v-deo.html
Note: If any of these exercises cause pain, then this is an indication you're not ready for this progression or exercise yet and you should discontinue the exercise until the pain comes down. Hopefully this helps :)
This is so valuable
Glad it's helpful Tom!
Thanks Remi for your valuable information.

good video for explaining everything. however for me heat didnt work at all made pain worse .
But yeah im almost pain free now . I should have another mri to see how its going .
Thanks for this helpful video.
I have been out of action from training and hockey for about 2 months. I can't imagine being away for over 2 years. Glad you covered the mental side because it is a long tedious process to try and get back. Looking forward to gaining more insight looking at your channel.
No problem crewzta! Hope you find the channel helpful and if you've got any questions - feel free to reach out :)

Hey thank for that! We love to hear how you handled your back and how it healed!

Awesome to hear Yuvi :)

Hi,
it is Great to see a video made by a person suffered from disk injury and recovered ; I am a marathon runner for 20 years , now suffering from disk bulge .
Thanks for all information you shared with us I hope you fully recover and become a normal
No problem Mo! :)
Thanks man. I appreciate what you did for me in this video. I have a similar injury.
- Jesse
No problem!
Good info! l just started physical therapy last week ,I am starting a new healthy diet, and moving from ice to heat.
- Stevopanoplois
Thanks Stevopanoplois and no problem :) Ya, in my opinion, that's never good practice whenever some sort of health care practitioner sends you out the doctor with a just a piece of paper with a handful of stretches to do... especially when you may be paying them 50-100 dollar for 30-50 minute sessions.
Remi Sovran , I appreciate your quick reply and look forward to more info.
Yes! I totally share your frustration with PT and Chiros.
How are you doing now with regards to your back?
Here are the tenets of osteopathy:
1 - The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.
- Brett
Yes I have and I'm a bit familiar with osteopathy, but must admit haven't looked into too much.
You can get the biography cheaper directly from the author last I checked.
highly recommend!
Thanks for the recommendation Brian! I'll definitely look into both A.T. and John Lewis :)
amazing video and info- you should become a medical doctor. Thank you. I have multiple lumbar bulging disc( and now 3 cervical c3-4-5 herniations- 53 yrsold- still workout 5 days a week

Thanks Jimmie! Ya, definitely thought about it, but I don't know if it's for me, or at least going through the process that it takes. My interest is and has been always around mainly sports training and nutrition/physiology :) Glad to hear you're still able to workout with all those herniated discs though as that sounds pretty encouraging :)
@JJ I’m where you were at 2 years ago. How are you today? What did you do?

No problem. Happy to help :)
Thanks for the video Remi, I feel this is the most informative video I’ve seen. I believe I developed a disc problem while having too significant of an arch while bench pressing. This video gives me hope that I can speed up the recovery process. Also are there any foods you believe that support the healing process?
- Condor
No problem Condor!
- Condor
Of course.
And no I never had pain going into the calf. Could be a different problem.
Really superb presentation and alws glad to watch yr vidios.. Inspiring me alws.

Well done Remi. I’ve been also suffering from chronic sciatica caused by a herniated disc on both sides. Been everywhere and still can’t fix that. It’s very depressing.
Sorry to hear that Mick. I hope things turn around and get better for you soon :)
- Cyanex
I would suggest visiting a competent back pain specialist just to double check things and see what's going on :)
- Joshua
Appreciate the feedback. I have worked on my presentation skills a lot since. And I'll admit, after watching this video, there could be much room for improvement.
Live and learn. Thanks, for the constructive feedback. Not often do I get a comment like this without someone saying super nasty things, so for that I thank you. :)
My MRI report says-
1. Lumbarspondylosis.
2. Diffuse disc bulge at L4-L5 level
Bilateral L5 spondylolysis with grade 1 anterolisthesis ofL5 overS1 this is my problem please tell me healing process

Thanks so much for sharing this. I have L4, L5/S1 bulges. I agree with everything you say. Heat not ice, avoid/minimise what irritates it. Exercises that are suitable, and HOPE, you have given many that, and God bless you for that.

Hi Remy,
Great video and content, by far the best I have seen and I have seen alot.
- Francis
Great to hear! I'd recommend reading through the book Back Mechanic by Dr. Stuart McGill. You'll find a lot of good information in that book if you haven't already read it. It's one of my top recommended resources :)
Most informative video regarding healing a disc injury imo. Three questions remi :D
1.) does a disc bulge gristle and thus heal over time, or do only fully herniated discs (where the nucleus comes out) gristle???
2.) once pain free, what's the harm in rushing back to your sport if the pain is gone.... surely the disc has gristled/healed right? Or would it be correct to let it heal for a few more months after becoming pain free?
3.) what's better/worse -wearing a backpack(weighing 3kg roughly) or carrying it like a briefcase and alternating sides to avoid any imbalances?
Thanks!!!!!
- Nore
Glad you enjoyed the video Nore! As per your questions:
1) For the most part from my understanding is that disc extrusions or sequestration's tend respond the quickest to healing since the nucleus material is exposed outside of the disc.
I think as long as your pain free, cautious about your activity, and maintaining good spine hygiene, you should be fine :)
3) Not sure if one is better then the other.
So remi in a nutshell here,,, can a bulging disc return to completely normal as in before the injury?
- Mohamed
It will never be the "exact" same. But that doesn't mean you''ll be in pain even if your disc bulge still exists.
This video has changed my thought about going to surgery..! How much time you take to get back to workout.??
- Bhushan
It was a slow grad and process. Once I got things under control, I started working with strict limitations, and then slowly continued to do more as I got better.
Remi i have degenerative disc disease and disc dessication and also disc buldge and herniated disc my age is 22
I used to do a lot of crunches and bike riding, and this is how i hv developed the pain.
I am just not recovering completely
At some point the pain is so intense that the only this which feels better is lying or heating my back.
And yes i am confuses about heating or icing the back. My injury is continuing for last 3 months
Pls help me what should i do?
- Rishi
Sorry to hear that man. That' doesn't sound fun. I"d suggest finding a good clinician and/or trainer who specializes in low back pain and can help you with your rehab and training :)
nice detailed video remi keep up the good work :)
- Abhijit
Thanks Abhijit, much appreciated ! :)
Hey Remi,
Thanks for all of this info!
Thanks!
- YNation
"is it just a matter of limiting irritants to irritate it as little as possible? "
Yup. That be my answer to anyone with mechanical low back issues.
Also, with a proper exercise program that involves core endurance and spine stabilization, you can improve your tolerance to activities like sitting, twisting and bending.
"Will the injury still heal while it's being irritated or do all irritants have to be removed?"
If you irritate a tissue, it's only going to worse. That's normal and similar to how if you picked at a scab all day, it would never heal.
@@RemiSovran Makes sense.
Thanks very much for the reply! I really appreciate it!
No problem YNation!
You’re a legend
Hello, I just got my MRI and it says that I have a 3 mm l5-s1 circumstantial disc bulge with mild lower neural foraminal narrowing, central canal is normal. I am having pretty severe discomfort on my central lower back when sitting down or driving.can u explain my situation?any help would be appreciated, since I have stopped working because of it. Thank you.
- Mike
I can't specifically explain without a formal movement assessment.
- Dennis
I would discuss this with your doctor. Might get a better of what to specifically look for as they know you and your body.
There is a treatment that I am currently doing that has been helping me very well. It is called non-surgical decompression therapy and it is a computerized table that acts like a traction table, but is way more accurate. Figured I would share this bit of info.
MrSovr Thanks for sharing that :) Not really familiar, but could you explain how's it's more accurate than say a regular inversion table?
it is a table that angles your back a certain angle to where the herniated disc is, then it pulls your back creating a negative vacuum in your disc to suck back in the disc stuff.
Where can one get, such a non-surgical decompression table?
you would have to find one at a spinal doctor, chiropractor, or any other spine specialist that has one.
- Kat
It can quite a long time for people. Disc injuries are very tricky. But with the right recovery program, it's possible one can get better.
Many thanks...great video.as said previously. .you are giving hope.I am suffering right now.have mild discs protusion..L2/3,L3/4andL4/5...suffering like hell sometimes..
- Neko
No problem Neko! Hope you can get better soon :)
