The problem with this question is what defined a "2nd option".
I dont think people are saying scottie is better than kobe when they choose him over kobe... they're saying he's the greatest side kick of all time.
There is an argument that kobe wasn't truly a 2nd option to begin with.
Imo there is a difference between being the number 1 and number 2 and being a dynamic duo like kobe and Shaq, lebron and wade, or Magic and kareem.

Kobe played a big role and played at such a level where they could be considered equals, but kobe was the 2nd option during that 3 peat.

@@danielsims916 True, and we did se eventually that Kobe was a great first option during his 08-10 run where he led the USA team to the gold, got an mvp, led the lakers to 3 straight finals and won 2 out of those 3, while not having a top 75 teammate (which only a few players like duncan and Curry have done) and facing more 50+ win teams than players like magic Johnson faced in their whole careers. Him and pau worked well. I’d still go with Kobe due to him being the better player and showing that him as a second option can get you a 3 peat but if we’re going strictly off of who contributed to more championships as the second option, I see why people would choose pippen.

This isn't even a debate: Kobe is the better all-time player and number 1 option; Pip is the better second option.
He's not the better anything, be it as a 1st option, 2nd option, or 3rd option.
@Evan H you're not taking the human element into account. All this talk on the video of, "Well, if they hadn't split up..." - a huge reason why they split up was because Kobe wanted to be the guy. He always viewed himself as the number 1 option, even when he clearly wasn't. In his early years, he was constantly forcing it, which led to some great highlights because he was so talented, but also led to a lot of turnovers and bad shots that were sooooooo unnecessary because you COULD just dump the ball down into the most physically dominant player in the game. But instead, you force it because you want to show off your talent. Pippen always knew his role and was arguably the best 2nd banana of all time.

@Francisco Pizarro what you're saying makes sense on paper, but basketball isn't played on paper. If you want to say the playoffs version of '01 Kobe or the '02 Finals version of Kobe was a better #2 than any version of Scottie as a #2, I'd agree with that. But Scottie was a #2 for 6 championships; Kobe couldn't stomach being a #2 for that long. I'll take Pip being the ultimate #2 for 6 rings over Kobe begrudgingly being an inconsistent #2 in '00, but a great #2 in the playoffs in '01 & '02 for 2 more rings. However, we can't say it doesn't matter why they split up seeing as how it was because Kobe didn't want to be #2, and because of that it imploded for a humiliating loss in '04 to the heavily underdog Pistons.
Wade = Kobe or better at his best. He isn’t lesser than.

Also finals stats aren’t in Scottie favor as a second option. Kobe was injured 2000, but from then on he clears production.

Primary playmaker, primary foundation around which the offensive sets were constructed, and equal scoring prowess with KD, makes Steph the #1 option on offense, and with everything revolving around what he brought….hence why the Dubs were barely over .500 in games Steph didn’t play but KD did, vs .800+ record in games with Steph but no KD.
