An SDPD Police vehicle License Plate Reader (LPR) picked up a car's license plate reported stolen yesterday in the Mission Gorge area. The vehicle was heading south on Fairmount Ave with two male suspects inside.
When they saw the officer following behind, drove into the business area of Mission Gorge and turning onto several streets. Once they returned to Mission Gorge Rd, they attempted to flee at high speed, running stop signs and traffic lights.
They were heading south on Mission Gorge Rd and attempted to make a left-hand turn. The driver lost control and crashed in front of a used car sales lot. Both males got out of the vehicle and started to run.
An officer chased the driver on foot and caught him, but not before injuring his leg. Other officers caught the passenger a short distance away. Both were injured in the crash and transported to a local hospital. Both appeared to be under the influence of a narcotic. Both have extensive criminal records and were on Probation.
License Plate Readers are a nice new tool for law enforcement.
