This type of projectile was particularly effective against the sails, masts, and rigging of a ship, shredding and tearing them apart.

I think you missed one of the main reasons to use Chain Shot. Often in naval combat of the day the goal was not to sink the opponents ship but to disable it and take the ship by boarding, chain shot was very good at tanging riggin and dismasting ships. The ships crew and officers were paid prize money for taking enemy ships and capturing them to use in their own navy's.

I've been getting tired of trimming my neighbor's tree branches that grow into my yard. A cannon with chain shot looks like a great solution... either it will clear out branches or decapitate the neighbors... or destroy their deck... or remove their chimney... doesn't seem very accurate.
I wouldn't recommend this method for pruning - it's too dangerous...
Thanks to flying wood splinters, the effects of the trusty old cannonball below decks weren’t necessarily limited to its direct flight path.

Phil Swift: "Holes from chain shot? FLEX TAPE seals all those massive holes; even underwater! To show how well it works, I blew this boat in half!"
In a Horatio Hornblower film starring Gregory Peck, chain shot is used to remove the masts of Dutch ships allied to the French.
Basically there were three main categories of ammunition. Standard round shot to damage the hull, canister or grapeshot to wipe out the crew on deck and chain shot to damage the rigging, mast and sails, making it unmaneuverable. Usually it was chosen depending on the target and objective. To capture the enemy ship it was better to board it and grape shot was used to gain an advantage in numbers so that the ship could be captured with minimum damage. Round shot was used when the enemy ship was to be destroyed/sunk. Chain shot was used to cripple the ship so that it could be a sitting duck while you shoot it to splinters.
I remember on an old game called Tradewinds, i would stock up on literally as many chain shots as i could on my ship.

Well, it is a Deadly Weapon...
Should be added, I think, that (according to the armoury at the Portsmouth Naval Museum) chain shots were not really used to take down the masts of ships, due to their inaccuracy, and the masts being quite small targets
They were, however, used against the sails and riggings, which were fairly large targets, comparatively, and destroying sails and riggings will make maneouver next to impossible for the vessel struck.
Oh, and they were also used on land, against tight formations of infantry (atleast, according to some sources)
This video looks interesting! Can’t wait to watch! Also, question for Simple History, is this a one person crew that makes the videos or a group of people?

Regular chain shot could take out sail canvas, shrouds and ropes, but it would rarely ever snap a mast pole in half. To snap a mast pole, you have to use solid shot, and it would take several direct hits to take the mast down.

The British always put the highest importance on having the fastest rate of fire. Also cannon balls were used against a ship's hull on the downward roll and everything else was used for anti-personnel or rigging on the upward roll. The Royal Navy tried to take a ship rather than sink it because the Admiralty would pay them for the ship.

Grapeshot and Canister shots = Giant naval Shotguns
The round shot was an anti hull shot, an noted in the battle discussed at the end. Some gunners could skip the shot on the surface like skipping a stone creating holes just above or at the water line, the would create splinters. canister was anti personnel would be used to clear thing like the fighting tops. There was also a star shot, bars attached by a ring, this was used to rip sails and light rigging. I had been told a stories about some land lobbers who tried to shot chain shot with the balls in two cannons the result was more damage to the gun crews.
They were so good in Sid Meier's pirates They had to make them real!
