  • Welcome to JustTenMoreMinutes aka JTMM aka The Freakin 10! This history is just another amazing lesson in history and understanding where battles were won and lost and inspiration and feelings these songs give people in these countries. I would of been a mess in Belgrade from the emotion and pride that everyone was feeling.

Maybe it's a mentality thing, or historical circumstances, Serbian history is full of last standings, hopeless battles, and those are the ones that are most glorified. From the battle of Kosovo in 1389 when Serbia faced overwhelming Ottoman force various uprisings against the Ottomans, most notable of which was the one in which Serbian rebels fought against several times more numerous Ottomans and when Serbian commander Stevan Sindjelic blew up powder storage when the battle was dying down killing himself and his men and hundreds of Ottoman soldiers, when battle was finished there was 4000 dead Serbs and 16 000 dead Ottomans, Ottomans decided to make an example of the rebels and they built a tower from their skulls, that tower still stands and is one of the most revered Serbian monuments. During WW2 Serbian government had a pact with the Nazis to let their pass through Serbia to invade Greece and Serbian people rebelled with famous "better war then pact, better grave then a slave" slogan, overthrew the government, got Hitler pissed, he invaded and killed over 1,5 million people, that's around the same number as France, UK and the US combined. Or we have more modern examples, in 1999 Serbia was bombed by NATO, Serbia at the time had 3 working fighter planes, those planes and their pilots all flew up to the sky to fight against much more modern and much more numerous NATO air force, they all were offered not to do it but they all accepted the futile task not to allow the enemy to bomb their country without any fight.

Oduzmi čoveku sve i on nema šta da izgubi.

You are correct, Serbs are really proud people. And that's why that speech fit perfect before their almost suicidal charge. Belgrade is not only another city, it's the capital of Serbia and one of their most historic cities. Imagine if a city of such importance in the US was about to fall after years of fighting and you were among the ones ordered to hold it. Your adrenaline and pride would be through the roof.
Still I love both the song and history behind it. Great reaction!

Concerning speech, actually Mentality of people from different countries are different so as American, you probably will have that doubt, but for Serbians this speech is perfect for such situation. Don't be offended, it is just different mentally and different historical inputs into the subconscious

I would say That is true, While I may be half Serbian I have tried explaining some things to friends who are prominently Anglo and they just do not get it or why it's a big deal.

Sabaton has played in Serbia after this episode was made, so they have played the song again, but seems like they really only ever play it there!
Here is a link to that 2021 performance, with the speech. It was (one of, if not THE first) the first show they did after live shows were allowed again:
Sabaton - Last dying breath - Exit Festival 9.7.2021 ua-cam.com/video/DI5040c_vqE/v-deo.html
Also a little 23min documentary of that specific show/festival & how the guys dealt with the shut down and getting to play live again.

It's difficult to fathom how one would feel as a soldier in that situation. Most of us have never and will never experience having their capital city being under threat by an enemy army in war.
It's a different time and situation, which we have a hard time imagining ourselves in, while living in peacetime.

I think it would be unfair to say to the Central power that their desicion on attacking the capital was idiotic. Capitulation the Serbian capital, like Indy said it, could end a frontline and focus their forces somewhere else. Italy just joined the war like 4 months ago against the Central Power and open a new frontline for the Austria Hungary empire and they have to deal with that. If they were to wait , how long would it take to begin another offensive. It could take months like 4 or 5 for weather to benifit them. Beside that, the Serb would begin to rebuild their defense system, or they could be reniforce with new troops from their allies. Then what ? Prolong the fighting and lost tons more man powers and supplies. So the idea isn't that impossible to believe like you have suggested. You can say and prove that the Central Powers was incompotent in many area and i would agree wholeheartedly. I also totally open on listening new viewpoints on this battle.

Централне силе су биле агресор, окупатор и починиоци геноцида. Срби су бранили своју отаџбину и то витешки, Христова војска, на крају донијели побједу Антанти 1918.🏴‍☠️🇷🇸

@7:00 Both Austria and Germany thought they were almighty, they'd just needed to come there and win because they thought of themselves superior. Nowadays, NATO repeats same mistakes, for a parallel.
On another point, Belgrade has been destroyed over 40 times, the fortress above confluence of Danube and Sava is on a high hill and you'd have to have major advantage to take it. And then you would be king of Danube-Black-Sea route. For example, previous in history, Atilla the Hun failed and Mongols went back.
You should come to Belgrade just to see 4k old fortress (Kalemegdan), to grasp defence and offense capabilities. Celts called it SingiDunum, Slavs call it BeoGrad, Tolkien calls it MinasTirith...
And lastly @16:00 - means a hero, in essence. They didn't have home or goods or things to return to, some had families, a girlfriend, who knows where, but understanding mind of that time meant glory and respect for your closest forever and respect in society, as they made history. Unselfish sacrifice for what you love.

As for the timing, the germans were well aware of the weather and climate cycles, the rains may have come earlier or be heavier than expected, but they wanted to get this done as quickly as possible before the winter. Serbia was the smallest enemy and looked weak on paper, they would have gotten direct link to their ottoman empire allies as well as free at least those 2 armies for coming spring offensives against much greater threats like british and russia. Basically they knew winter was coming and hoped serbia will just roll over so they can deny the allies positions in baltics and free up resources for other fronts in the spring.

They needed to holding that position as long as possible so the rest of the army can retreat safely

I can understand why you dont get the speech , but in balkans believe me we have so many wars and different empires and dictators and kings and empires etc etc etc fought each other through our existance , that this specific speech make total sence to us as balkan people cause we have very different mentality about wars...

In order to understand what Serbia faced, it is best to look at the number of inhabitants, the Danube Monarchy had 50 million inhabitants, of which an army of 4 million, while the whole of Serbia had a total of 4 million inhabitants ,Austrian officers even promised their soldiers an easy victory against an opponent who had never fought with a modern European army, but only with the armies of the outdated Ottoman Empire. They proudly declared that it would be a easy summer walk to Nis, a city in the south of Serbia. Despite that, Srbia managed to repulse several offensives of the huge army of Austria-Hungary, until she was attacked from the back by Bulgaria .The Danube Monarchy suffered so many losses that at one point it offered huge territorial concessions to get Serbia out of the war . Serbia did not want to do that to its allies, which was disastrous for the population, which in some parts of the country was left with almost no male population.
The Austrian officers were amazed by the courage of the Serbs, so for the first time in history, the victorious generals erected a monument to the defeated.
