      It wouldn't matter anyway since the USB 3.0(aka USB 3.1 gen1) speed of 5Gb/s is equal to 625MB/s, so 2.5 times the max speed of the faster card (250MB/s). Also the USB C port on the back of his PC may actually be USB 3.2 which supports up to 20Gb/s (2.5GB/s, 2500MB/s).

    What cracks me up... being in the computer field area, many of us know this and know how to read memory cards, however it is a BIG MISS even for us to translate what we now think of as common knowledge to another industry that must rely on memory cards. So glad you cleared it up for THIS industry and in a very authentic way using a 'real world' test. Great Job! Love the fact that you also CALL out the haters :) Even as my marketing coach has said... any form of advertising is STILL advertising and in this day in age, controversial comments can do a lot to build awareness and you gain a lot of CRED when you show growth in front of the masses at that point. Having worked in a high-end camera store for over 6 years, I can say one of the most frustrating things to sell is memory cards.
    We dealt mainly in C.Fast and SDXC cards, and about 70% of the time the customer would choose the wrong card.
    Keep in mind, our customer base was primarily small-to-medium business owners, often with more money than sense, having had their finger off the pulse for many years, focusing on building their business instead of actually shooting and keeping up to speed. Trying to carefully explain to this kind of person that they're wrong, the number on the box doesn't matter and they'll have to spend about 4x that price to suit their needs was a perpetual nightmare.
    I'd say about half of those customers thought we were trying to finesse them into buying a higher priced item which they didn't really need, so they would buy 30 or so of the cheaper cards only to come back in a couple of days with a head full of steam, ranting and raving about false advertising, accusing us of selling counterfeit cards, demanding refunds, etc etc.

    There is always more than one way to look at things. Several times , I have purchased CF or SD cards that were adequate for the device of the moment , only to find that they did not deliver the performance in the next gen device that I acquired...sort of like buying a fast car and putting a governor on the engine. I now buy excess performance capability in memory cards so that I can use them longer in future devices without compromising the performance I paid for in the next gen device. That does entail paying a small premium today but saves tomorrow. Smart shopping and reading performance reviews can get the lowest price .

    11:20 - This info isn't true for modern cameras. You do not need an sdcard with fast write speed to record at high rates because anything that is yet to be written will be buffered to memory (commonly called an "image buffer" or "smart buffer"). The recommended write speed of your sdcard will depend on the memory capacity of the device you're using to record.
    Your info is only true for old cameras that did not use onboard ram and relied entirely on the write speed of the storage device. Most cameras (or smartphones) these days have at least 4gb+ ram so even the slowest sdcards can be used for recording high quality video.

    • @JesusinYouTV
      @JesusinYouTV 5 років тому

      I came here to say this. I doubt they will see this comment, but this is true. You don't need two dongles. Those are logitech unifying receivers. You can connect your keyboard and mouse to the same receiver, not having to use two, and waste two USB slots. Just download the unifying software, unplug a dongle, and sync the device to the remaining dongle. Then, you have an extra dongle to use on, say, a laptop. This also means you can buy a unifying mouse sans dongle from ebay and save the money from buying a full package, since you already have the dongle.

    Extra info: They are stating maximum possible through output. The Transcend card reader can achieve up to 260MB Read and 190 Mb Write while dealing with all cards at the same time. The ProGrade however, can deal with 2 of the absolute fastest SD cards on the market (up to 600mb/s simultaneously on each card) at the same time and will need a USB 3.1 Gen 2 connection that will allow for that maximum 1.2GB/s. This is essentially necessary/good only for people who consistently write more than 1 card at a time. For example somebody who needs footage constantly.

    you should clear the cache of your computer before getting data for each read and write because it temporary stores previously used data, if the file name were found on the cache and check the validity that it is just the same file, it will just call out the file in your memory cache, not from your SD Card, this will make it faster to read or write the files.

  • @conradbrown5881
    @conradbrown5881 5 років тому

    Cool video, but a slightly better way of testing the transfer speeds etc is a program called H2testw (free). It will do a read and write test with it's own test data, so no need for a test file and it's more accuarate and consistant. It will then give you an exact readout of the transfer speeds. It can also write to card until it fills up testing it so see if the capacity is as quoted, therefore catching out fake sd cards.

  • @TheRealLink
    @TheRealLink 5 років тому

    I was originally going to say hey, you confused your reads and writes but you did append that after doing the first copy and paste set of tests ;). Yes the nomenclature is a little confusing for sure, but if you're owning an expensive enough camera (or card) to warrant looking at minimum speeds, I argue it's important to do a quick glance and know before you're buying anyway. I wonder if the better card reader simply has more cache in it, but it's also nice to see those gen 2 cards push data so fast. I guess I tend to not care about SD card write speed as much since I'm only pulling data off of mine since I'm still shooting on CF. But if you're doing 4K+ work, then that's a different matter since the card's write speed will fall below the minimum requirements for higher bandwidth footage.
    But still a neat test with an expensive card for sure!

  • @williaml1570
    @williaml1570 5 років тому

Looks like a great computer. I mean a well-balanced nice PC with high-performance and great compatibility. I don't know what was wrong with the initial video -- I haven't seen it. How fast a card card can be read is useful if only if it make a big difference in duration. 10 seconds faster is hardly here nor there. The real reason there are professionals that use hi end sd cards in there cameras is for sport photography. Where by they would (and with the use of a hi end camera) shoot multi-able shots per second. In order to capture the perfect timed image. So it is the writing to these that is more important. Also the reliability and longevity of the card.

  • @Kyanzes
    @Kyanzes 5 років тому +1

    Cheap doesn't necessarily mean slower and vise versa. It's hard to choose storage media or media readers based on advertised read/write speeds. I've bought pricey media storage devices with advertised read/write speeds that were not even close in sequential and random read/write benchmark testing. I actually have two cheaper SD cards with a lower advertised read/write speed that are actually faster than one of the more expensive SD cards with a higher advertised read/write, both are the same size and speed class. I buy local, then benchmark mark the device and if doesn't live up to its advertised specs, I return it. Same goes for just about everything else I purchase. There's nothing worse than companies bloating their products specs or intentionally not listing pertinent information to rip off consumers.

    You do mention it, but just to highlight - my GX85 for example has a max. internal write speed of about 33MB/s. Therefore, there is no performance enhancement while shooting with a faster card. The GH5 is much faster internally. Check your camera's specs before choosing a card.

    There is still mistake regarding the Transcend reader. The reader you are using is old model RDF8K which doesn't support UHS-II but the specs you are showing are for the newer model RDF9K and with that you should be getting about the same results as with the ProGrade reader. I own the same old model as you.

    fyi the card reader difference is the same as a dramless ssd drive vs one with it.

  • @PizzlesTechTime

    That actually might be your SSD slowing down because of the SLC cache.
    Anything over 20 GB will slow down. Unless of course you have a drive with no Cache

    Sony G series SD card better option (reliable) than ProGrade. I lost all my photos on two ProGrade cards!! I use Transcend Reader Card USB 3.0 (CF, SD, MicroSD) for 5 years without issue. Enough speed for me. I go to the kitchen take a Diet Coke and Hershey bar and return to the computer and everything (download) is in my computer ready to work. Forget ProGrade.!!

      Actually, the cable with the weird connectors is a pre-2000s Centronics printer cable. And, it is a *parallel* transmission device, not serial and is wicked slow compared to today's USB serial system. I'm not trolling,-I'm just old enough to remember all these older ways of doing things which were the best for their time.

    It always surprises me that a lot of "pro's", using expensive equipment and advising other people about buying expensive equipment, are themself cheapskates and don't listen to other people giving them advise about, lets say, better cardreaders.

  • @viera996multi

    But why not compare two cards with similar specs? Yes, if you compare the V90 and the V30 card, ofcourse the V90 is gonna perform better. What I'm interested in is how does a budget fast card (like ADATA Premier One V90 64gb ~50€) compare to a more expensive V90 card (like your Prograde) and a similarly priced slower card (like SanDisk Extreme).

    I've read that many V60 cards are not able to record at the GH5's max quality. We all know companies lie about their products, just look at the size advertisement that counts GB = 1000MB and not 1024MB. From your experience, which is the cheapest and best SD card for the 400mb/s speed of the GH5 ?

    Great job and the results do match what’s expected given the tech & price point . Would be a fun test to do adding in an XQD card or even the ultra-fast CFast cards - but you are going to have to use bigger files :)
    Keep doing these and LOVE the ending - that was so funny 😂

    NEWS FLASH: Faster cards are faster!!! Sorry to pile on, but, um, yeah. A much more interesting...and useful...test would be to compare two IDENTICALLY spec'd cards that are priced differently. In other words, is "ProGrade" or "Angelbird" any better than an el-cheapo brand card?

  • @MArgusChopinGyver
    @MArgusChopinGyver 5 років тому

    There's some bottleneck on a card reader, so you need reader that can do fast transfer if you want take the advantage from the more expensive card
    if you have a money to drop on those expensive things, you might wanted to read the manual so you didn't messed up in the first place
    Investing some time for read the manual because you have drop a serious money on that things and it's not that hard xD

    are you guys just too much wanted to find things that he told is wrong? the speed of the highest card reader here is 200MBps which is 1.6Gbps most of the time. even the USB 3.0 / USB 3.1 gen1 or the USB3.2 gen1 (the same thing) has 5Gbps is over 2 times greater than the max bandwidth it is needed to enable to max transfer speed of the SD card.

  • @narf0339
    @narf0339 5 років тому

    speed is 1 issue, life span of the card is another, all sd cards has limited write cycles, since the speed improved so much, i guess they use different technology or material for the card, so the life span might changed too.
