Just found your channel. Great video. Quick question. Do you think Face Detect will work with the older Nikon "D" series lenses. They don't have an auto focus setting on the lens? Many thanks.
Thank you for taking the time to explain! Is this THE best technique for shooting portraits with my D810? I mean, some sites advocate "not letting the focusing to the camera"? I confess I have yet to experiment using this technique but it seems "logical" to leave it to the camera sensor to find the subject within one of the 51 focus points instead of, me, having to manually use AF-S, Single Area, aim the central Focus point onto the subject, recompose and shoot?
I was looking for something exactly like that for a D3300 in order to do self-portraits, but it doesn't seem like this feature is included. Only tracking focus and that is not much help for self-portraits on a timer.
Hi There, Yes no camera has an auto focus feature for still images that track AND focus without a human half shutter press to keep the focus maintained. Interesting that camera manufacturers to this for video but not still images! Thanks for watching.
@@ThePhantomPhotographer Thanks for the reply! The tracking is useful for stills, but it only works if the subject is in the same focal plane. @@ThePhantomPhotographer I tested it today and face detection works on my D7500. It is not the same as Eye-AF on the mirror less cameras, but detects face. I have to try whether it will continue focusing on the people face when they are moving fast.
Another tool in my tool box! Thank you for doing a great job of explaining how to set it up. Do you know if there are any fine-tuning options? I noticed it momentarily chose your chin during your demonstration.
Hi Tim, Yeah, with only 51 autofocus points on this DSLR it's not awesome on trying to stick to an eye. Other than having better firmware for eye / face detect, having increased AF points on mirrorless camera also helps!
Yeah, with the SLRs you have to keep the face sort of toward the middle of the sensor. The extreme edges won't AF at all. The mirrorless ones will, though.
Hi Joy, both aren't particularly great. The Nikon D750 would need to be moved to AF-F with face detect to get your face movement within the frame while vlogging. The Nikons generally tend to continually "hunt" focus in this mode which is not great. the 6Dm1 I don't think has autofocus once you start recording either, so you won't be able to change focus points while recording. I would go a cheap mirrorless from Canon or Sony for vlogging as your best option.
@@ThePhantomPhotographer thanks.actually have these old cameras in my contact...thus trying get information whether vlogging can be started flawlessly with one among these two .!!

@@ThePhantomPhotographer I ask because I have been asked to do a wedding in October. I dont do weddings anymore. Hello! On the D7500 set up from the video, face detect only works in live mode, not through the viewfinder. Is this correct or am I doing something wrong?
Hi There, there is a separate face detect mode for video. Just look for the little face icon when you are in video mode and going though the autofocus types.
Hey there Carlee, thanks for commenting. It won't have a box around the face, as it is a DSLR, not a mirrorless. It will still be the smaller black box that should pick up somewhere on the face when you first autofocus in this mode. I found for me that the black box tended to try and go for the eye area. Let me know how you go!
Hi There, it is similar. The difference is that with 3D tracking your initial focus you still manually have to select the area of the face you wish to focus on. With face detect on and in Auto, you do not have to do this for your initial focus, the camera will identify the face automatically and track as well.
@@ThePhantomPhotographer I thought this was just face tracking but since it seems to track the eye, how are the reviewed shots? Is the focus actually on the pupil or eyebrow/lashes? Good video I'm thinking of buying this camera but I wasn't very impressed by the way it was tracking you. I guessing it would work better if you just walked straight on instead of crisscrossing back and forth it probably would work better that way but at least it has something for face detection.

Now i set a shoot timer and press the shutter release button as soon as i am in focus. 5. The focus light starts blinking so ready to take a photo in 10 seconds. 6. Now as soon as i start stepping back while in front of canera to take a good picture, i see myself out of focus in camera display despite the green square around my face. No matter how well i move around to get myself in focus but it doesn't get me in focus. But If I ask somebody to do a favor to half press shutter release button before timer expires, i come in focus. But i would not be able to do that alone. Any suggestions? 🙂
I’m not sure but is the 5200 compatible with the Nikon Wireless Mobile Utility App? You can try that to focus. If not, either get a tether to trigger it, a remote-or if you want to do it like me, I place a tripod where I’ll be sitting, focus on that and put a timer on😅

Thank you and Merry Christmas
You're welcome
HELLO FROM OAXACA, MEXICO... IS IT POSSIBLE FOR NIKON D800E? B5 HAS ANOTHER SETTINGS IN MY D800E... GREETHINGS!!!
Hi There Octavio. Thanks for watching my video! I am not sure on this sorry. I have not owned a D800E before. I wish I could help further but I am not sure on this one. Hope it is wonderful in Mexico!
I dont know why my D810 doesnt have the AUTO or GrP option
Extremely helpful
Thanks! Have a wonderful day
It work on Nikon D300s ?
Do you know by chance if this works with pets mainly dogs by chance as I do struggle to focus on my dogs face when hes running
Hi Ara, I have done limited testing on my dog and yes it works if they are being still. For running I would Highly recommend 3D focus while in AF-C. With 3D, you pick your initial focus point, and then the camera should follow that point if it stays within the optical viewfinder focus area. Hope this helps!
@@ThePhantomPhotographer thanks alot for this!! I'll give it a shot.
I have focusing problem in my d750
When i want take pictures in portraits mode, remember i always use AUTO FOCUSING..when i half press shutter for focusing purpose(as usual i want focus at subject face) but after many time half press button, points alway never focus FACE,they always focus subject body..pls guide that what i do when i want exact focus at subject face..plss guide
Hi Syed, I you are taking portraits of people who are not moving then you should use AF-S mode in single point auto focus. This would be the simplest way to ensure you can choose where to put your focus point (that is, on the eye). Hope this helps,
@@ThePhantomPhotographer hi
Thanks for kind reply, yeh i know single point s perfect for sharp results but when time were short n we want pics rapidly so as usual we all want use auto mode..i imagine that when we want humen pictures so cam should focus at face(in auto mode) but i noticed that focusing point targer faces hardly, they always target humen body...i m confused
Plsss guide that what i do for fast faces focusing in auto mode(s)
@@syedshehzad8149 Hi Syed. Maybe try AF-C in 3D mode. this is what I use for Weddings and events. You then only need to manually pick your focus point once and then after this, the focus point should continue to track wherever you initially focussed. Unfortunately there is no great Face Detect / Eye Detect in any DSLR's in any brand. If you are looking for instantaneous automatic face focus, you will have to move your equipment over to any of the new mirrorless cameras. They all have firmware and settings that are capable of doing this.
Do you know how to do this in Nikon D5200? I don't have "matrix metering" option.
Hi Hani, I don't think this option is available on the D5200 sorry.
@@ThePhantomPhotographer Ok. Thanx anyway
Could this work on a nikon d5200?
Hi There, no sorry the D5200 doesn't have this functionality
This is full frame only, so far i tried, no menu on d7100 and d7100, but d750 has it
This is awesome dude. Thanks so much. Does this work with live view
Hi Mate, This is just an Optical Viewfinder feature. However most Nikon DSLR's already have a face detect option built in (look for the little face icon once you are in AF-F) Hope this helps
thanks for the effort and sharing. using a d7500 with the 60/2.8D and with my model 6 feet away, i focused on her closest eye and was able to do have a pretty good success rate. i then when to af-c with a single spot on her eye, with her moving about as she did previously and also did okay. was one better than the other? i could not say there was much of a difference. i thought both did well. thumbs up.
smalltalk.productions thanks for sharing. It really comes down to individual preferences I think. Eye detect AF is such a key feature in the new generation mirrorless systems, that I thought I’d share this. All the best
The yellow color showing why when focusing around the nikon aD850 camera
I want to fast rply plz
This option did not exist under metering on my D610. I have to go into live mode, hold the AF/M switch and scroll through the auto focus options with the aperture wheel on the camera.
Thanks for letting us know Elise!
@@ThePhantomPhotographer No problem! :D
Does this work still when you switch back from LV, or only in that mode?
Is possible to save such settings?
Is this available with D7500
This was very helpful. Thanks!
Hi Michael, most welcome. Thanks for taking the time to comment as well!
does it exist on nikon d5000?
Very helpful. Thank you.
You are most welcome!
Thanks so much for this video.
You're most welcome!
Good video I'm thinking of buying this camera but I wasn't very impressed by the way it was tracking you. I guessing it would work better if you just walked straight on instead of crisscrossing back and forth it probably would work better that way but at least it has something for face detection.
Thanks for watching. The D810 is still a decent camera but these older DSLRs just can’t compete with the technology in the new mirrorless cameras . The D810 is Still a landscape photography beast though !
@@ThePhantomPhotographer ^ This.
Haha....Thanks! I did not even know this!
Most welcome 🙂
Does it work on nikon D7500
Can you help me with Nikon d7200 to enable face detection, cause I can't find that settings in my camera
Hey there Privan, I don't think the D7200 has face detect available. It is only on some full frame cameras like the D810, D850, D5 etc.
@@ThePhantomPhotographer Hi, D7100 has it always ON by default (in AF-C / AUTO) it hasn't an option to turn it OFF in menu as D500, D810, D850 :) D7200 should have it too, it is the same D7100 with upgrade. Just select AF-C / AUTO and enjoy. Higher end bodies got possibility to turn it off ;)
thank you very so much iuse d7100
You're welcome!
Nice video
Thanks for commenting. Greatly appreciated
Thanks for this helpful video
I'm facing an issue with focusing when I try to take a picture of my own in following way.
1. My lens physical switch is set to autofocus.
2. I put the dslr (Nikon D5200 with AF-S 18-140mm) on tripod.
3. In Live View I have set the AF-area mode to face priority to see a nice green square around my face and so do i see when i come to front of the camera and see through the display.
If not, either get a tether to trigger it, a remote-or if you want to do it like me, I place a tripod where I’ll be sitting, focus on that and put a timer on😅
did the same settings on my D750...but it's not working
Excellent!
Many thanks!
Nice video thanksbro
Don't have it on my d5600 😔
Who was pushing the focus button

Why can’t I find B5 for matrix metering on my d800?
Don't think the D 800 supports it Kenny.
Thank you so much!
Many thanks!
My Nikon D800 doesn't have face or eye detection focus
Hey there, thanks for letting us know. The 3D focus setting on the D800 is still pretty good though. Recommend using this if not already. Thanks for watching 🙂🙂
Nice
