When you get nervous you easily lose 90% of your skills which makes you even more nervous. Take the terror out of performing. Watch the video.
So good I had to watch twice! Claus is my guitar teacher and therapist.
I'm the exact opposite in that I have no nerves at all on stage, and yet in every day life amongst people at work and in social situations I am anxious and nervous as hell.
I can relate to this.. extremely self conscious among people but cool in front of them
Sometimes I'll be in the guitar store, and inevitably there will be two guys having a shred war. That's when I avoid picking up a guitar, because the mindset they have is that you're a loser and failure if you cannot shred. I don't shred, and never will, because it's not my goal. For this reason, I will suck in the eyes of people like them.
Then again, I saw Steve Vai on a video on his channel, where he was exploring some pedals, and a pedal inspired a melody. Of course, he got a negative comment. "Look at this so-called genius, when he's really just a loser who can't make a melody without cheating with pedals."
There are jerks everywhere. I just do my best to avoid them. The guitar is an Infinite Instrument, and it seems that there is a rather narrow focus on what makes a guitar player great or bad.
Playing to impress others goes against why I'm learning guitar in the first place.
Just found these videos and cannot speak more highly of them. Being somewhere around intermediate and making many of the errors he talks about and also now finally trying to focus on truly getting better these (and other of his) videos are brilliant. They just seem to work for me making so many things clear which were not.
Thank you claus !!!! for your fast as lightening response 100% a+ job as usual I am so addicted to your site I cant stay off for more than a few minutes truly great thank u again!!!
Thank god that I have an interest in guitar, Otherwise, I have missed a great teacher like you, Your videos not just inspire me to do better in guitar but in every aspect of my life. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Very true all you say, I saw a good guitarist in my audience one time and I freaked out cause I knew or believed in my own mind he would nt be impressed, then bumped into him some time after and he told me he loved the show! I also identify with nerves, it really is hell on earth shaking prior to performing, I have huge admiration for top performers, especially soloist s
everything....everything begins in the mind ...and is controlled by the mind try and chill ..life is short ...youll play better...hes right about this
Love this! I have called massive thing about playing and singing in public, and now and again get invited to play at an open mic. This gives great tips.... hopefully it will do the trick. Cheers :)
I acted once in a play, for only two nights. I had three rules 1) know your lines 2) dont be flat 3) go on autopilot. Never acted before in my life. The woman's (who played my wife) husband who sees every play said I was the best one up there. I never had stage fright. Im sure playing a band as a drummer and bass player helped, but you cant really mess up your lines.
100% right, as always. And - Inner Game of Music - worth read it.
God, even thinking about it makes me nervous. Yet I am center stage with my job every day. 27 years playing and I just about play in front of 3 people, but not at the same time. Maybe one day...
Solid performance advise and solid life advise.
I would rather play in front of 100 strangers than 10 co-workers
101% helps! thanks so much claus!
This is genius!!! I'm going to do this.
Awesome and useful,Claus,thanks!!!!!!
O my Gee, you really put the finger on my wound with this video, Claus. So offen when I jam with friends I seem to fail on all the things I'm doing perfectly when I'm practising on my own and by moments amazing myself on skills I've managed to build so far. Maybe I should let them hear some recordings of myself and then start jamming just to make them aware of what I càn do.
No offense, but I think you just need more practice. Once you have stuff worked into you muscle memory, things become so much easier. So whenever you play wrong, you can focus on getting back on track instead of dwelling on how you should have played. Always practice like you'd do when performing. If you perform standing up, practice standing up. This is my best advice to anybody and I wish I had been aware of that 25 years ago...
Claus i have a question, can you maybe show some ways, to mix alternate picking with sweep picking? I don't know why, but for me it's really hard.
when you're standing in front of an audience, imagine you're wearing only underwear
it works great
Ficojepet THATS A SCARY FUCKING THOUGHT!
This is a common misconception... Instead you should imagine that you're naked, holding a asparagus!
If you're having difficulties with a certain song or technique, while practicing alone, you can forget it in front of a live audience.
Platinum lesson
Easier said than done 😡
Man, is that ever true. I simply can't win the battle between my ears.
That monkey brain made me giving up the guitar so many times... Now i don’t suffer anymore cause i know i will never be able to be good in front of people. I enjoy playing alone cause i have no choice.
Wow, this is me also.
That intro was absolutely beautiful! Is that a song anyone can direct me to, or is it merely just Claus’ god-level noodling haha
