Thanks, Tom, the DC sheet metal building was Meiklem Furniture co . from 1974 to 2004. We built all custom furniture and specialty wood fabrication. I sold the property to Don in 2004 and he has done a great job keeping the place up. The round structures on either side of the bridge were as local elders explained to me, way back, guard houses. The man who built the mill and basically the whole village lived in a mansion up on Sunnyside. He built all the duplexes for his forman and their families. It was explained to me that he was religiously prejudice and didn't want Catholics coming across the bridge but when one of his most important employees married a catholic girl he decided to do away with the restriction The mansion burned down before I came to the village. The trolly used to come right to the mill and turn around to head back to Norwich, and the mill was still running in 1973 when I bought the building. Most of its time it ran off water power
, supplied by the Yantic River. The old sluiceway exits under the old post office building. I have many fond memories of my time in Yantic. Feel free to reach out for more info.

@@davemeiklem Thank you very much for all the information Dave. Very interesting. I really hope the Mill gets the restoration it deserves. It’s an incredible work of architecture.

Wow Tom, 1908 for the construction of that bridge and those 2 round towers. I would love to see photos of the workers doing the rock wall masonry, and Wow, those shone benches. It must have been very hard and demanding work and I bet it took some time to complete the project. The manpower required in those days must have been tripled as compared of what is required today.....and think of the equipment used in those turn of the century days. You posted a photo of the bridge and those circular towers today, and I wondered where this location was.....this vide answered my question☺. Yousure are keeping yourself in great shape Tom with all the SAFE walking you are doing to produce these discovery You Tubes!☺The rock walls round town are most impressive and the effort to build them must have been something to watch. Not much of that is done nowadays!.☺Great video Tom, Sincerely, Bill M., Uncasville, CT(I gotta get out and do some walking to get back into good shape!)

@@discgolfbilly Bill……you’re right……I was thinking about how they built that bridge. It must have been incredibly difficult without the modern tools we have today. It’s really beautiful down in that little village.

@@TomKaszuba I must compliment you on how steady you are with that camera as you walk and film. There must be a feature with the camera that limits bouncing around results. Another thing, I never knew about that Fireman's Field that runs parallel with the Yantic River. Wow, it has lighting as well. I am always looking for great public places to create a disc golf course. I have the baskets to do it, I just need the permission and go ahead to put it in. It is a location easy to get to, just off Rte. 32 & 2. I used to work in Windsor, CT in the late 70s and road past that Yantic area with all those histoiric mills, and they will always have a special fondness to me!☺

There has been, and hopefully, a future annual reunion of “Bid’s Tavern” in the parking lot of the firehouse. It’s usually in May. Hundreds of people attend it for the great sandwiches Tom LaFreniere used to make in his small tavern.

They're basically called bridge towers - a Gothic throw back to the days of guarding bridge access and charging tolls to cross bridges.
