I greatly admire you, Mam, for instilling in me a love for reading epic poetry, even those not included in my UG academic curriculum. Your talent for finding the best in everything is truly remarkable. I wanted to express my appreciation in the comments section but felt I lacked the words to catch your attention. Nevertheless, I feel fortunate to have found your channel. If i everhave the opportunity to become a teacher, I aspire to become a teacher like you, capable of leaving a lasting impact on students. The first time I encountered the Clear Light meditation from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, I connected it back to the stripping away of externals and experiences that Phlebas went through, but it wasn't until many more read-throughs that I realized that when Eliot is connecting the readers back to Phlebas, who was once as handsome and tall as me, that what Eliot might be saying is "Tat Tvam Asi," that once you remove the intrinsic experiences of the cry of gulls and the deep sea swells, the learned skills of the profit and loss, and the individual circumstances of our ages and youth, at the ground of being there is but one singular consciousness, and that while as a literary figure Tiresias may be a Homeric Samuel, (or the Prophet Samuel may be a Biblical Tiresias), within the context of the Waste Land he is .
Much more recently, I realized "drowning" is so metaphorical (e.g. "I'm drowning in paperwork/dishes/laundry/debt"), that the best way to hide the metaphor is to use something that the brain has to really struggle with to understand the clear meaning, in this case "death by water." What makes Phlebas like Prometheus is that while the Titan stole fire from Olympus, the Phoenician sailors stole the alphabet from out of Hieroglyphics. Now, even more so than 102 years earlier when the Waste Land was first published, the "flood" that their stripping the pictorial language of Egypt into two dozen or so sounds that can be used to represent literally any thought ever spoken means that even a short poem like the Waste Land can take years to fully track down and read all of the referenced texts, let alone all of the works that texts might be referencing.
The last line of Prufrock, "Till human voices wake us and we drown" hit me when I read your comment.
Thank you "Dearest Mam". I am an english literature student. Mam , I bought a little gift for you on Sarswati Pujo. How can I send it to you. Thank you Di❤
