- Had so much fun getting after it today. I beat 2 personal records already on my very first ride. The new bike handles amazing on down hill chunk!

Yes definitely very quiet. You do get some chain slap but no sound. You can just hear the chain whipping the chainstay rubber guard. If you throw loose items inside the glove box they will rattle but that’s to be expected. It’s designed for the wallet and tube bag. Yeah the desert sand color looks really good man. I wouldn’t really call it gray anymore. It looks brown in the sun but I love it. Reminds me of the 2018 nomad.
@@spicymountainbike Hey - thanks for the reply - thats great news, looks like its now totally full tube in tube with not a lot of room for the cables to wiggle so sound from rattling should be non existent, even on your videos it sounds really stealthy, bar like you say the chain slap, which really cant be helped although the new transmission gears look like they would help with that, great news! yeah i had a spesh with swat and unless i packed it up tight it rattled so kinda know you have to stuff things in and make sure its tight - looks totally rad really dont see many 5010 around these days
Anytime dude! Yeah the new cable housing slide really tight inside the frame. I actually had a little bit of trouble getting them through which is good. Wireless shifting and droppers will definitely reduce any further issues with cables but I’m happy with my dropper and shifters being cable. The wireless system actually adds weight over the cable setup. Yeah you rarely see 5010s anymore. People just want full 29 bikes these days. The tallboy, pivot bikes, and megatower are very popular around the west. Also trek is a huge seller here.
@@spicymountainbike thats good to hear its tight getting into the frame, just basically eliminates any cable rattles at all, think these very new versions are all really well made in that respect, should be really quiet as theres not much to rattle bar the chain if everythings tight....yeah its a shame some of my best riding was on exactly the same 5010 you have in your other videos, was a great fun bike! i do like 29ers now they have settled though with geo, and SC are hard to beat for quality! really glad the cable routing and bike is really quiet though!
The old 5010 is almost timeless. It does have bad chain slap with that metal chainstay cap and the external cable routing for the back brake looks a little dorky. You can still find those old 5010s used on the market all the time.
I would definitely recommend getting the new one.
The new one is definitely no comparison really. It’s much better all around. At first I was against it but since I just went ahead and bought it I’m more than pleased. This is their best lineup of quality I think in their history so far. The paint is far more durable to chips. I don’t have any chips yet for smashing some gnarly rocks already. The new bash plate underneath is nice and big and I took a chunk out of the plastic already.
The good thing about the new one it’s hard to explain but the back half of the bike feels exactly like the v2 with better shock absorption. The front half feels like a nomad even though it’s 140. That big wheel really increases the speed all around. So you’re getting a tight handling bike that brawls. That’s the reason I stuck with the 5010.
I agree some of my best rides were on the v2. I did 3 long distance xc races on that bike. One was a 12 hour last year where I got 4th place and one 50 mile endurance xc this January I got 31st place out of over 400 entries. 3rd place in my age category.
Looking back my results would have been much better on the V5 5010.
What build is it? Thinking seriously of getting one. Had the original Solo in 2013
I just ordered the frame, forks and stem bearings/stem from competitive cyclist because I don’t like the pre assembled build kits that are available.
They assembled the forks for me with stem bearings and stem on the bike as I don’t have fork cutting tools. Those guys are really nice!
I ordered the cc frame in medium last year around September and it came in in late January of this year. I ordered each part separately as I could save money. Just paid off the complete build.
This bike is a lot better than the original solo but it’s not really a solo or 5010 anymore in my opinion. They would’ve been better off changing the name to mini-tower because it’s more of a enduro bike now. Everyone that sees my bike thinks it’s an e bike or that it’s really heavy because of the stout frame.
If I were you I would not rush to buy one until you can test ride one. Where I live there are no rentals available so I was forced to order one online. But I will say it feels “different” and I’m still not 100% sold on the whole mix wheel idea. I highly recommend a test ride first because it will save you a lot of money if you don’t like the feeling. There are a lot of good bikes out there and I no longer think Santa Cruz is the best out there. I’m happy with my decision but it has not been easy getting used to the “feeling” haha.

How tall are you and how much do you weigh? I ride Arizona and Utah as well but I have not ridden them yet on the new 5010. I’m in El Paso Texas which is very rugged terrain much like Arizona if not worse.
That’s so cool wen your video first started it looked so familiar to west phoenox trails. I’m 5’7 160lbs with all my gear. For some reason all the UA-cam reviews mention that it gets outgunned in the rough, but I gotta try it in person to know for sure.
You’re about the same as me. I have a medium it’s absolutely perfect. Yes El Paso is very similar to phoenix man as far as rocks. Most reviews of the 5010 suck on UA-cam except the one by bikers edge. I have to agree with him that the bike is much much better than the old one. Yesterday I PR’d all my downhills on strava compared to my old nomad and 5010. It doesn’t really get out gunned at 160 pounds. I think after 170 pounds people need to get the Bronson for more suspension. The problem is I think most people don’t have the handlebars, tire pressure, cushcore, and suspension set up properly before they make their videos. I think a lot of people just rent a bike that’s been setup for someone else.

No can’t stand that junk on my frame. The new frames and paint are even more durable than the old one.
@@spicymountainbike Sweet ! Good to know. I picked mine up but still haven’t been able to ride it since it’s still too muddy so I just stare at it 😂
Good idea I try not to ride in the mud also. It just ruins the bearings instantly. I don’t even wash my bike. I just use a damp cloth because the water is so destructive to the bearings and linkages. On my 2015 nomad The bearings are all seized up from mud riding and bike washing. Learned my lesson for sure.
@@spicymountainbike Yeah I’m not a fan of mud either. It’s great that Santa Cruz offers lifetime replacements on the bearings
Yeah for sure especially with the smaller bearings of the v5 compared to the v4. You can really punish the bike without worry.
