@@JenOnTheMovethat is absolutely fabulous to hear! Let's hope to steer towards a growing surplus so that you may do all this in the best comfort and passion!
Great video, as ever. The film "The Railway Children Return" was partly inspired by Bamber Bridge - or specifically The Battle of Bamber Bridge that took place near the station in 1943 between a joint group of black US soldiers and locals against US military police who wanted to impose racial segregation.
Lostock Hall (house) was about 1/2 mile east of the station. The site is now occupied by St Catherine's Hospice. Looking at photos the Hospice includes some of the original hall building.
the steam loco was a Royal Scot class built in the late 20s for expresses on the WCML- basically it was the 1920s substitute for anything that a modern Pendolino would be doing
And rebuilt in the 1940's to fit with a taper boiler (good), to sort out the piston valves (mostly good), and to stop the frame cracks of the original engines (not so good - although frame cracks were reduced, it was always a problem with the Royal Scots).
Lostock Hall, pronounced Los-tock not Lo-stock. The current station opened in 1984, replacing the original that closed in the early 70s. This was sited the other side of the road bridge alongside a large steam shed. Bamber Bridge is my home station (well, parents local station as I'm currently a Londoner). The giant meccano set is there to hold the signal box up which leans inwards towards the line. It was erected in early 2019. The box itself controls four level crossings (the line is under Preston Power Box control) and isn't set to close till 2026. So that mess of metal is staying put for some time. Also, a subway under the line was located by the former station building, handy for when the crossing barriers are down, which can be up to 8 minutes at a time. All filled in now and you just have to wait it out.
i love the East Lancashire line theres lots of lovely stations along this line infact Lancashire has a lot of lovely stations and i love Preston station that station has so much charactor and that station brings back so many childhood memories & Blackburn is a great station too brilliant vlog
My prevailing memory of Lostock Hall is going to see a steam charter pass (it actually went via the other lines towards the WCML south of Preston and I didn't realise it would do that.. Devoed.) Also a lad aged 17ish walking all the way down the Preston platform, crossing the railway and then walking onto the Blackburn platform just in time to board a train towards Blackburn. Needless to say he got an earful from the conductor. Great video Jen!
I think there used to be a hall back in the day - But the railway historical fact is that there used to be a steam shed at Lostock Hall which was pretty large.... Mostly Steam too.
Hi Jen, great video as ever, re' the Signal Box being held up by scaffolding, Shippea Hill S/Box where my Railway career started was propped up from behind to stop it falling away from the line. It eventually had an extension built at the back and in recent years has since been closed with all signal operation transferred to Cambridge Power Box. Always enjoy seeing your canal walks too. Take care, Jon B.
@@toffeeapple82 yeah, about that… That one isn’t included, for reasons you’ll see in the next episode! You’ll have to wait until I do the Blackpool South line I’m afraid!
Next week you're going to get two videos in the same day! Watch this space next Tuesday to see what I'm up to! Always good to bump into Stu! Follow him on Twitter here - twitter.com/every_station
The steam locomotive featured in the video at Lostock Hall is an LMS Rebuilt Royal Scot number 46115 Scots Guardsman. Built in Oct 1927 by the North British Locomotive Company, in Glasgow for the London Midland and Scottish Railway. When originally built it was in a different shape to what you saw and it was rebuilt to it's present shape by the LMS in Aug 1947 and was withdrawn by British Railways in Jan 1966 with a working life of 39 years. As of 2023 she is now owned by David Smith and is based at Carnforth Motive Power Depot.
Brilliant video Jen, nice to se Stuart from Every Last Station in this one. Lol the announcements still interrupt you in the middle of nowhere it seems. You deffo don't want to be smelling lots of gas near a railway station. Also I'd love it if Northern would give my Class 156's back to EMR lol.
Another great video. When you were at Mill Hill I thought of good trips to do: Mill Hill to Mill Hill (London) Stratford to Stratford (London) Ashford to Ashford, etc.... :)
Sweet canal walk with a lot of bird song and a pretty little stone bridge and steps. Hard to believe that with all your traveling you have not "made your intention clear" until now! I'll drink to that!
0:39 Well, Blackburn Station's signage looks very legible and organized! 0:43 Nevermind The Cherry Tree station looks kinda cute indeed! I wonder if there's really some cherry trees now... Is there a hall in Lostock Hall, and if yes, is there really low stock in there? Very pleasant (pun not intended) video to watch! It makes my mind travel a bit...
Did you not see at Blackburn Station the railings that when passed show the faces of Lancashire celebs etc. There was a station at Hoghton, some buildings still remain. What happened to Lostock Hall, pronounced Lost -ock, its claim to fame is that it was closed and reopened many years later on the east side of the same road bridge rather than its original westside. You can still see the old platform access from the road bridge in the stone work, the old major Lostock Hall engine shed is now a park.
Very nice, especially with Scots Guardsman, a rebuilt Royal Scot class loco, with its support coach. I wanted to tick off all stops on the Borderlands line on Monday, but 230009 failed once I reached 7 stops, so I got kicked off on stop 8, and rode 150240 back to Wrexham. I'll have to do Howarden, Penyffordd, and the stops after Shotton up to Bidston another time.
That overhead steel structure at Bamber Bridge is there to protect the signalling tower building from collapsing onto the busy East Lancashire Line I think. But it does look very strange. Apologies for deleting my previous post I had some weird comment and I don’t know why I got that.
The UK had a very similar toy, called Meccano (designed by Hornby) I believe they bought the rights to Erector Sets about 30 years ago and renamed them.
You can never see too much canal action 🙂 Meanwhile, is the thumbnail the start of a new series? "Jen Holds Things Up": this week, Bamber Bridge Signal Box.
Very odd signal box indeed - it will probably be taken over to the ROC anyway - also I don't get Vitriol Works (also on Calder Valley lines), like it serves Moston and Mills Hill, but the rest of the line is not signal boxed, so what?
One of the best things is seeing how much longer the list of patreons and channel members is getting, so well-deserved 😊
So blessed to have you guys! It means that the costs of running the channel are now (generally) covered! ❤

LMS Royal Scot Class 6115 Scots Guardsman or as much as The Flying Scotsman is original 😂😂😂😂

Great video, the interruption at Pleasington did make me laugh quite a bit 🤣

I did not expect to see a fellow RWBY fan in this part of UA-cam lol

My line! Smell of gas at Lostock Hall?!!! I must have left cooker on without lighting it!

Beautiful video, loving the lamp posts at Lostock Hall. Pity about the signage at 0:45 that looks horrible!

The is a Pleasant Retreat at Lostock Hall.
The mecano type structure at Bamber Bridge is part of the signal box restoration project by Lancashire CC.

Great video as always. Northern really does have a lot of Sprinters knocking about, why won't they die 😅

The signal box @ Bamber Bridge looks like it's part of an erector set. (I don't know if these toys are/were sold in the UK.)
The UK had a very similar toy, called Meccano (designed by Hornby) I believe they bought the rights to Erector Sets about 30 years ago and renamed them.
Also is that you playing with the back ground mask they added to Final Cut? Saves me using a green screen.
I don't use Final Cut I'm afraid, I'm a Premiere person! That effect was just a simple mask though, with some tweaking to allow for the clouds!
Nice one!
Cool signal box
Is Bamber Bridge any relation to Bamber Gascoigne? 🤣
You can never see too much canal action 🙂
Meanwhile, is the thumbnail the start of a new series? "Jen Holds Things Up": this week, Bamber Bridge Signal Box.
The last time I was at Lostock Hall I didn’t smell gas but saw some geographically challenged seagulls circling the main road near the station
ok, Jen putting you on the spot... all the train stations you have been to what is the best and worst?
09:39 it was a steam train

It’s not low-stock hall it’s loss-stock hall
U should do ever train station in North Wales
Funny you should say that - there is a plan brewing - but not sure if it's going to be this year or next yet!
