The lawsuit was in regards to a financial claim Levin had about a play he wrote about Ann's diary and life. That he was promised by Otto Frank to have his version of the play done in the U.S., but instead Levin's play wasn't used. The verdict was later set aside, and an outside agreement on compensation for Levin and rights to his play were agreed on. NOTHING in that civil case had anything to do with someone else writing the diary, other than Ann Frank herself.

Her indignant response (because of the outrage of effacing the place like that) was that she didn’t need to because it was all over the place. Her name was also Ann Frank - just no “e” on the Ann.

Below are some of the questions and thoughts I had after watching the original 60 Minutes special featuring Vince Pankoke--questions and thoughts that I sent to Mr. Pankoke in an email. Mr. Pankoke responded at length and generously. Moreover, in our correspondence, I have found Mr. Pankoke to be open and respectful to disagreement and additional hypotheses regarding the identity of the one that might have betrayed the occupants of the Secret Annex.
Again, here are those thoughts and questions I wrote to Mr. Pankoke:
Perhaps like anyone who reads Anne Frank's diary, I, too, have spent time wondering who informed the Gestapo about the hidden occupants at 263 Prinsengracht. In my wondering, I have relied upon clues and possibilities found in the diary's contents. Therefore, prior to watching the 60 Minutes story, I had never heard of Arnold van den Bergh. One question I have is the following: If Van den Bergh did alert the Gestapo to the Jewish occupants at 263 Prinsengracht, who informed him? The 60 Minutes piece suggests that Van den Bergh had lists of addresses where Jews were hiding; but how would he have known this information? I can't imagine that the Franks, the Van Pels, Fritz Pfeffer and their helpers shared their hiding place with many people, regardless if some of those people were Jewish. My understanding is that a few family members of the helpers knew Jews were hiding at 263 Prinsengracht, including Bep Voskuijl's father. But your investigation suggests Van den Bergh knew--my question is, how would he have come to know?
I wonder if the latter question--the question of how--is connected to the helpers. Watching the story, I was struck by Otto Frank's apparent sudden silence over who betrayed his family and his fellow occupants. The story suggests Frank's silence was related to Van den Bergh's own position as a Jewish man, and if Frank were to reveal Van den Bergh as the betrayer, this information could fan the flames of anti-Semitism. But might Frank's silence be connected to a slip up by one of the helpers? If one accepts Van den Bergh as knowing Jews were hiding at 263 Prinsengracht, isn't it conceivable that one of the helpers, briefly and mistakenly and unfortunately, let slip a word, a hint, a hesitation that betrayed the Franks', the Van Pels' and Pfeffer's secret residence? Might it have been a momentary but costly error by one of the helpers that informed Van den Bergh? And if that helper admitted their slip up to Otto Frank, perhaps he chose to drop the subject, devastated but knowing he couldn't hold one of his helpers responsible.
(I know--that last paragraph comes with a lot of what ifs and hypotheticals.)
I do not think Wilhelm van Maaren can be dismissed as the possible betrayer. I recall that, in the 60 Minutes story, you say Van Maaren was not anti-Semitic; but does that really matter? Did Van Maaren suspect Jews were hiding at 263 Prinsengracht, or did he simply suspect people were hiding there? Perhaps he reported this to the Gestapo, not necessarily knowing there were Jews and hoping he might receive a reward.
Finally, what did your investigation make of the burglars that broke into 263 Prinsengracht? In the diary, Anne mentions at least several break-ins to the site's warehouse and offices. In one instance, those burglars may have come to the Secret Annex's concealed door, and in another, Pfeffer might actually have interrupted a burglar, might have been working in the office when the burglar was still present! (I'll have to return to the diary and re-read the wording used to describe the latter instance involving Pfeffer.) I can't help but wonder if one or any of these burglars might have turned in the Jews hiding at 263 Prinsengracht.

I'm glad to know even that much more about who betrayed them from this segment. But I'm wondering who the Jewish man that turned their hiding address in to the Nazi's got that address from. It's probably just too unkown. He could've got it from anyone that happened to somehow notice they were there. I believe that we'll be able to find that and answers to all things out in the afterlife though. So I believe all the details will someday be known to everyone.

There are stories like this in the thousands, not only jews betraying jews. Betrayal for survival was common everywhere during world war 2. My family members escaped a communist country, they shared stories how neighbors they've lived with side by side would report their neighbors for anyone suspicious or a threat to the communist party. One day ,our uncle was sitting at home when he had a loud knock at the door. He opened the door, there they were, four communist authorities arrested him. He did 4 year's of torture in prison. He realized his neighbor, his childhood friend he grew up with was his betrayer. My uncle was against the communist regime, he was now an enemy to those who supported the communist party. To make matters worse for my uncle, his family member's escaped the country, considered traders of their country. My aunts husband was escaping the country when he was shot and killed by the communist party. His wife he left behind was taken away, never to be heard or seen again. We believe someone reported my uncle's plan to escape. They knew the exact route he would be taking for his escape. Someone he trusted reported him to the authorties. The sad part of it all ,is his body wasn't given to the family for buriel. The government took his body and most likely threw him over a cliff. His wife was arrested, leaving 5 children behind. She's never been seen since. Anne Frank stories are in the millions during world wars, far more tragic than the Frank's family. How about their stories? Do they not matter?

We all like to think that, were we in a situation like living in Amsterdam when the Nazis who had invaded the Netherlands, we wouldn't rat anybody out.
Arnold van den Bergh, a member of the Jewish council, apparently was the person who ratted Anne Frank's family out. What would we do, given the choice of ratting someone out, or going to a concentration camp ourselves? A few of us would choose not to rat the people out, but most of us aren't "saints".
Not excusing or exonerating Arnold ven den Bergh, but he was faced with a terrible, really untenable choice that NOBODY would want to have to make.

I visited The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam many years ago and I remember learning that it was a cat who betrayed the hiding place in the annex to the nazis. There was a cat that the children, Anne and her sister and Peter found wandering around outside the annex door and the children adopted it. Though nearly starving themselves, they fed the cat, much to the dismay of the adults in the annex. One day the nazis came through doing an area sweep to find Jews. They came into the building and looked around but decided there was no one hiding until suddenly, the cat showed up and walked over to the annex door. This alerted the nazis, who then entered the annex and captured the Frank's along with the others hiding in the annex.

Oh wow. I've never heard that. But it's sad to say that the cat betrayed them. Poor kitty, he was just hungry and knew that Anne was a lover of animals. Tragedy all the way around.

Thijs Bayens, the man responsible for assembling a research team to look into the matter of who betrayed the Frank family and the others hiding in the annex, said that "we don't have 100 percent certainty" on who was the informer and that "there is no smoking gun because betrayal is circumstantial."
Personally, I believe it was the Dutch guy who knew the Franks and others were hiding in the building.
