  • Initiate BRANCH BOOM and SMALLER LEAVES in Delonix regia #gulmohar #गुलमोहर #bonsaiinmaking Bonsai Tips & Hacks #GCG
Hey plant lover, how you doing??
Today I plan to share a year update on my Gulmohar tree and how to get more branches and smaller leaves on your bonsai specimen. Now let us discuss a few things in brief so that your interest stays right where it should be. So yes, in this video we will discuss 1. pruning- what should be the age of the plant, how to do it right and what can go wrong, et cetera. 2. Watering- Before, during, and after pruning 3. If the plant should be exposed to the sun during this transition. And 4. The way forward for the plant after it comes out of pruning exercise.
So sit tight and watch the whole video and don’t miss a thing. Also, hit that subscribe button, great, let us unfurl the magic now……
    About the Bonsai Specimen
Let me first introduce this bonsai specimen to you- its Delonix regia aka Gulmohar tree and there are so many other names I am sure you are aware of them. This particular tree was grown from seed and its almost a year old. And as you see we have a trunk going straight up without any branches and that’s what we will do, get more branches and smaller leaves. If you wish you can check out the seed to a young Gulmohar tree video later, I will leave a link in the description.
    Pruning
Your plant needs to satisfy 2 conditions- should be more than 8 months old and should have at least 4 pairs of leaves. Now there is something quite fascinating about the leaves of a Gulmohar tree, as you see these are compound (doubly pinnate) leaves and have a feathery appearance. Each leaf is 30-50 cm long with 20 to 40 pairs of primary leaflets or pinnae, each divided into 10-20 pairs of secondary leaflets or pinnules. So next time you see one, have a closer look, and be amazed.
    Cutting Part I
Well, if the plant already has a couple of branches, no need to go and cut it further however if it's like the one you see here, then do it. Find a place on the trunk which is green and lies somewhere in between the leaves. A clean-cut will do and don’t worry about the wound as young plants don't even pay attention to it so you can also leave it like that
    Watering
Make sure that you give the plant a dry period of 3 days before the prune and then water it as soon as the pruning is complete and then continue to water it once a week. And if you haven't fertilized the plant in months, make sure you do it within a couple of days of pruning
    Sun
The plant should be in shade right after pruning and as soon as you see the wound has calloused, the part you had cut is all dried then transfer the plant back in the sun
    Cutting Part II
Now all you have to do is remove the leaves below the original cut somewhere in the middle, don't have these cuts too close to the trunk. The new leaves will take care of the food from here on and these old leaves will dry out eventually.
    The way forward
There have to be at least 6 months before you can prune a particular plant again
I loved every minute of processing and making this video, hope you too had a good time. Thank you for being here, appreciate it. If there is anything, questions, feedback or suggestions, please reach out and we can exchange information. I wish you all the energy and luck to grow more plants and trees. If you haven't already subscribed, please make sure you do. I will see you again soon, take care. Goodbye!!

You're welcome. I am delighted that you enjoyed the video. Always a pleasure to hear feedback 😊👍
Let us clarify a few things to start with-
      - All the leaves are yellow or a few on the lower stem are turning yellow and then falling off?
      - Is it getting full sun (6-8 hours) every day
      - Overwatered or underwatered? Delonix regia needs great soil that quickly drains off the excess water. The best is to water once a week
      - How is the climate in your area? These trees love a hot and dry climate
      - Another thing I need to understand, what are the chances that the tree is rootbound, been in a pot for more than 2 years (even if it was started from seed in this pot, 2 years and they will grow roots aggressively)
Once I have more information, I might be able to pinpoint the problems more accurately.
In the meantime, if there is anything else, please let me know and we can have a discussion.

I planted these in September kept them alive all winter. I live in zone 8b and they spent most of the winter in the sun but brought back in at night. Mine are still in the odd phase of rapid growth and leaf dropping. They are about the same size as the one in the video. Should I wait a bit longer to prune?

Thanks for the great video! I have grown my Delonix Regina for about a year from seed and needed this information to work it into a bonsai. Question, do you ever need to remove any roots and do you have videos on how to move the plant to a bonsai style container?

Thank you so much, AskTheCarExperts, I am glad that you enjoyed the video. Feels awesome to know that, thank you.
Great question, and I am excited to reveal that there is a similar video in the making, within a month or two you will have it on the channel. And that video in fact would cover how to get a Delonix regia ready for a bonsai pot, with protruding roots and the likes, I have no doubts that it would be one of my best videos.
And about the second part of your questions, do we need to remove the roots, I would say, no, the roots of this tree would grow quite slow when in a container so you don't have to worry about that.
For now, I would suggest that you keep it in the same pot for about 6 more months and then trim it once, and then when it's about 2 years old, it can be put into a bonsai pot.
Until then, if you have any suggestions or more questions, please feel free and we can talk more. Thank you!!

However, please tell me about the foliage- are the leaves healthy and dense, if that's the case all you got to do is expose the plant to some more sunlight and water once a week not more. Fantastic video, thanks for sharing it!
I've recently been looking into bonsai as I'm growing some Anadenanthera from seed, and only have an apartment's worth of space for these trees that can grow up to 20m tall. This video was especially helpful, as both the species I have and the one you used are bipinnate.
My saplings are currently about 7months old, so too young to trim yet, but I'm starting to think ahead with them. I believe that they weren't receiving enough light earlier, so they're a bit leggy and as such I'm unsure of where to cut, as many of the leaves are towards the tip of them, further along than I'd prefer the branching to begin. Any advice on how to approach this?
Thanks again, excited to explore the rest of your channel and for our future interactions. Good health and best wishes to you

Thank you so much for the kind words! Always a pleasure 😊
Wow, that's fantastic!! So is it Anadenanthera peregrina!! Yes, they do grow quite tall. Bipinnate, yes 😊
A couple of observations I would like to share I managed with my Delonix regia-
      1) Kept it in the smallest of the pots (it's more than a year old). Once I see roots have grown thick enough I will transfer it into a bonsai pot
      2) I had made the cut right at the pinnacle, reason was simple, if I had cut any lower all the leaves would have gone and for such a young tree- sometimes they don't come out of that prune and start dying
      3) Now, I got a couple of branches alright however it would have been fine (or slightly better) if I had waited a year more. Because right now, at this age, our focus should be getting the trunk and roots stronger by any means available (so a smaller pot, sun, potassium-rich fertilizer and a bit of pruning- pinching to be exact)
And you mentioned these trees being leggy, they will be given ultimately they will have a naked stem so that's the natural way for them to grow.
      4) Branching- It would only begin if the stem size is at least 6X the size of the branch you are cutting otherwise it will again grow with one branch as the main branch and whatever growth you will get as lateral branches will drop off within a month or so, and you are back where you started. So for now let us focus on the roots and stem.
Hope I did answer your questions! If at all there is anything else, please let me know and we can have another discussion. By the way, that was a great question- the way it was formed, I felt like I am looking at these trees of yours and they are right in front of me. Thank you for being so explanatory. Simply amazing!! And it's always great to speak to someone who knows his plants that well.

Yes, one Anadenanthera peregrina, and 3 Anadenanthera colubrina.
So, if I understand you correctly, the intent for the first pruning (about 6mo from now) will be to cut back the roots and to focus on growing the width of the trunk and the general vigor of the plant, perhaps also moving it into a bonsai pot? Focus on branches will come later, once the trunk and roots are more developed?
I greatly appreciate your thorough reply and your enthusiastic positivity, I hope all is well for you. 😊

@@williamlemens5594 Wow, that's some project you have going on with 4 of them. Kudos!!
      - Roots should just be left alone for at least a year in a SMALL POT (too early to disturb them). Roots have their own way of telling that they need more space to grow, probably in your case, they would start to show on top of the pot
      - Bonsai Pot- Will come into the picture once roots have definite girth on them
So give them 6 more months and see how things are looking. if it's necessary you can prune the top part and then let the trunk and roots grow at their own pace.
Thank you, William!! I wish you great energy and luck with the your project and if it's not too much of trouble I would love to hear about the progress whenever possible. Thank you again. Cheers!!

Absolutely, in fact it loves hot weather. I am based in Dubai and we have almost the same number of Royal poinciana trees if not more than Date Palm trees.
About NPK, it is not necessary however during winters if you can add some every month (small amounts and in the evenings) that would be better for the tree to grow at a faster pace.

Hi, I grew about 15 from seed this past summer and all of mine continue to lose leaves and branches. They’re down to about 1 - 3 branches each, all at the top near the green growth. If I use this prune in the spring when growing season starts will it start growing more lower branches or are they going to be semi-permanent at their current height and branch structure?

    • @Logan-of4bv
      @Logan-of4bv 4 роки тому +1

Follow up, are these trees safe to do harder prunes? To really cut back the height and growth from last year?

    • @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai
      @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai  4 роки тому

15, that's a crazy number however I am sure you got all the space for them or maybe you will keep them confined to a smaller space, well done!! 😊
      - That's their normal growth pattern, 2-6 leaves (bipinnate, of course) at the top and the rest of the branches gradually turn yellow and go away
      - Once pruned, it will start or let us say continue with the same pattern- 2 to 6 leaves at the top, and only if the stem is strong enough, it will divide into a couple of branches, that's that
      - So all in all, the height would increase considerably each month, but the branch (leaves) structure would stay similar
If there is anything else, please let me know and we can have another discussion, anytime!

@@Logan-of4bv Sure! It would too early to go for hard prune. I always maintain and suggest that hard pruning should be done on plants once they are more than 3 years old. More often than not, plants don't grow too well after a hard prune if done within the first 2 years or so.
Of course, you can hold on until spring and then just prune the top 1- 2 leaves and that should be enough for the next 2 years.
      Thank you.

Simply avoid harsh winters and extreme summers, the rest of the year is perfect for pruning. If you do it well during the initial growing years, you can have a great shape for this tree. Once it's 3-4 years old, then pruning won't be that hard, what I mean is it won't be needed 😊 👍

@@GauravChhikaraGardenDubai that is very helpful! What if I’m growing inside, as my area’s outside climate isn’t correct for this tree? Does it still matter what time of year I prune? So that's a controlled environment, then it won't matter what time of the year you prune. Also, one important thing- don't hard prune the plant (it's too young to come out of that). There is a chance that you remove all the leaves and the tree never sprouts again. So make sure you remove maximum branches and leaves but keep some at the top (this is a tree so it will invariably have a naked stem- if you try and keep the branches at the bottom intact, it will lose them as it grows).

I would like to share that it may take anywhere between 5 and 12 years before the Gulmohar tree would set flowers. Your tree is a long way from maturity. Also, please note we are looking at 5 years to bloom, when the tree is started from a mature tree's cutting otherwise a seed propagated tree would take close to a decade to set flowers 😊👍
Until then, I would suggest that you keep feeding it well and when the time is right you will have all the flowers every after year.

I pruned it just after Spring because i didn't want to stress it more since it was repot in Spring as it wasn't the happiest in the mesh pot i had it but it kept it small, wanted it to recover before and develop enough leave/branches to sustain itself to do the trim then i found this video. It's summer here now so it's in the growing season and doing well presently. It's really a lot happier since being repot in early Spring and has recovered from its first Pruning exercise. I understand your dilemma 😊 I have been through this a few times.
The Delonix regia trees grow quite slow under the soil in a pot, hence the first repot can wait for at least 2 years. Also, if you wish to keep it small, then make sure you delay the repotting process as long as possible.
👉The best pot size is half the size (or bigger) of the tree's height. So if you keep the pot size and plant's height in harmony and repot when they mismatch (1:2) the tree would grow perfectly 👍

The only time to repot is when their is a definite problem with the roots or its really not happy in its pot. I had to repot mine because the pot it was in stunted it too much and couldn't really sustain a lot of leaves at a time because of it. Didn't place it in a huge disproportionate pot but slightly smaller than it's original because its root mass was air pruned and struggled during the winter. It's in a terracotta pot now so still breathable. But has bounced back and getting healthy since i changed the pot grows a lot faster then previous season

      5 Delonix regia, awesome 😊👍
Prune the roots only if they outgrow the pot and you are planning to keep them small. And only go for root pruning once the stem is at least matches the girth of a normal finger, that would be about when the plant is 2-3 years old.
The idea is to prune the shoot a couple of times before pruning the root.

@@GauravChhikaraGardenDubai Thank you for your reply on such an old video, I appreciate it. I do plan on keeping them smaller rather than larger. Do you have any recommendations for pot size? It will be their first repot this spring, so I want to make sure I'm not going too big or small. I look forward to your future videos!

      @@markwaldron5397 You're welcome 😊👍
Size won't be a problem at all, whatever the size of the plant- go half its height for this one-time repot.
Now, the idea is to keep it in this same pot for years, so every 1.5 or 2 years you will have to prune the roots and change the soil.

When I cut my gulmohor bonsai..... Only one branch develops .... All other dies off.... How to create more and more branch??? Please reply

    • @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai
      @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai  4 роки тому +1

This is an interesting questions, congratulations and thank you for bringing it up!!
That's something quite common and I will tell you exactly how and why that happens. If you prune the Gulmohar tree, it would grow back just one branch (this becomes a new main branch), if the stem is not thick enough to support 2 or more branches. So you got to strengthen and thicken the stem first and then it would easy for 2-3 branches to grow on their own.
Give it 6 months between prunes and 2-3 prunes should do it. This particular video I had got 3 branches- one main and two lateral, probably in 3-4 months I will prune it again. It's process and you got to keep at it. If there is anything else, please let me know and we can have another discussion.

How does your year old delonix have so few branches? My 5 mo tree has 12 and more growing. This is my first bonsai. I've grown it from seed

I wish I could answer that question 😊 Sometimes you revise the growth patterns to suit your plans, that's what I did and it worked.
Well done with the Gulmohar Tree you raised, great job 👍
I am sure you would factor in climate as one of the reasons. So where are you based?? Nevertheless, this is one great result for a tree grown from seed, should be proud and I am happy for you. Congratulations!!

With mine I kept mine in a small mesh pot for most of the year it's grown. This basically air pruned the roots and kept it small as i am growing it for bonsai so was the desired result but i have changed it in Spring into a terracotta and has responded with much more growth. It's overall happier. The new pot wasn't much smaller but i chose an root appropriate pot as its root system was air pruned and small. The mesh pot didn't seem to allow it to have a big enough root system to sustain a lot of branches like yours for its age mine is just over a year old, so i do think the type of container or pot size it's kept in will affect how many branches your plant can support. I repot mine to allow it to start becoming healthier as it didn't seem happy it survived but i did want to start allowing it to do its thing and become thicker. Its already filled the pot with lots of roots some came out the bottom already and i will repot it into a slightly bigger pot if it does require it. But my plan is to allow it to just grow

You didn't explain how to keep the leaf size smaller?

    • @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai
      @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai  3 роки тому

I must have missed saying it clearly, however what I did in the video, takes care of the leaf size as well.
If you prune this tree once every year or so, the leaves wouldn't grow any bigger. All in all, if you are not letting the tree gain any height each year, the leaves would also keep shrinking. The idea is to control the stem height, and that would be it. Roots and the number of branches can grow all they want, just the height, if kept in check, leaves would not grow in size.
If there is anything else, please let me know and we can have another discussion.
