- Today we're exploring Northern Ireland for the first time! And to kick things off we're starting our N. Irish adventure in the small coastal town of Portrush - a gorgeous little town built on top of a mile-long peninsula.
Portrush is surrounded by sandy beaches on all sides, is equipped with a world-famous golf course and amusement park, and has enough cafes, antique stores, and entertainment centers to keep you busy all day long. BUT, does Portrush have good coffee? That's the question we're hoping to answer in this video!

Northern Ireland is grey, wet and boring. I live here, its a shit hole. There are some nice scenic places like the mountains of mourne but the weather sucks so bad that people are generally depressed looking and otherwise. On top of this Northern Ireland has some of the smallest minded people known to man. Stuck in their little sectarian bubbles with their pathetic little flags 🤦♂️ Lord take me out of this place. Its not even a country ffs It's, oh nevermind .. . Please
Johnny Green this rant is glorious 😂 true people here are defiantly small minded especially in n Belfast 👍 but calling Ireland grey and boring is subjective , if your sitting about all day just going to pubs on the weekend then of course it’s dull , go explore the country side as you know it’s beautiful, there lots to do in the north and it’s quite beautiful actually , I’ve lived in canada America Poland England Scotland wales Spain and no where compares to Ireland 👌 it only seems dull and miserable if your doing fa but that’s the same as any country
To be fair it’s probably because I travel a lot so the craic just isn’t the same as back home so that’s probably why I love this land so much 🇮🇪 🏴 ( I could find the NI flag so I just used the plain George’s cross 😂 I just clicked on that technically we don’t have a flag as the flag we have isn’t recognised as an official flag 👍 brilliant 😂 (added the tri colour because for me personally that is the flag I recognise as Ireland as a whole)

Suggestion: Perhaps compare a REAL Irish bar in Ireland to any "Irish-themed" bars that you may have been to anywhere else in the world!
I went to an "authentic Irish pub" once. It was literally just a regular bar but with neon green lights and clover/leprechaun imagery all over the walls

A common greeting in NI is “What’s the Craic? (Crack)” and it just means like how are you? I’m in belfast and we’ve got a lot of wonderful things in this country to see!

This is my home town! I have missed the beaches since quarantine. You should check out Portrush East Strand on the other side of the town, it has spectacular sand dunes.
You might have found most things were closed for non-quaratine reasons. Portrush is a tourist town and many places only open from Easter to September. Also if this was made on a Sunday, NI has different (more old fashioned) trading laws than the rest of the UK. Many places cannot trade on a Sunday until 1pm.
We loved the beaches! They were so lovely! We actually walked past East Strand too, so lovely 💕

55 degrees north is a good place for food too but I don’t think it would be open unfortunately
I haven’t lived there for 35 years so I’ve no idea how much it’s changed. Having said that I just saw my old house so clearly some things haven’t changed.

I must admit, being from Belfast I spent a lot of time in Kelly’s nightclub in Portrush during the 90s and all the people there were always very friendly, it was a really happy place 🙂
@peter goodman might depend on how old you are Peter 😂, was always known as Kelly’s to me but you are right of course the nightclub was called Lush, either way, plenty of good nights spent in it 🤪

What I love about you guys is that of all the 'Americans in the UK' videos that are out there, you two have completely immersed yourselves in the culture more than any others.
Seeing Eric here in what is just a transport café - eating basic, cash n carry bought food is brilliant.
You really have understood the north / south divide (almost) and not just through lip service.
And it's all done with good humour and enthusiasm.

First thought on etiquette would be what I would do when I'm in NI, and that is to steer clear of any religious or political talk or at least presumptions until you've established background. But again that's coming from growing up in the 90s in ROI with a southern accent. Anytime I've visited NI in the last ten years, I've only ever been met with the most helpful and friendliest people ever.
Yeah I’m southerner and 17. I’ve only ever experienced very friendly people up north but I do try to steer clear of policts. The people that put up the flags would be the same people that wave at you on the street.
where i am from, n-east england, walking bare foot in the sea is called " plodging" .... its one of my favorite words! . big love to all people :)

@@WanderingRavens Not a problem! There is no beach anywhere in Ireland that isn't freezing in my experience. Oh, and expect more of that lovely ironic sarcasm, such as the "sunny portrush".
There is a lovely little coffee shop just on the outskirts of Portrush called Dora's, if you're still in the area you should give it a try.
If you are Game of Thrones watchers, there are a few areas around Portrush that were used for filming. Portstewart Strand is one, and it's probably the nicest beach in Northern Ireland, so you should give it a try.
Don't worry about the people saying 'don't say this, don't say that'. It's very unlikely anything you say as a tourist will offend someone, the worst that is likely to happen is they laugh and tell you what they think you said wrong. And the next person may totally disagree. Few people expect tourists to conform to their views.
Enjoy your stay, you're in my favourite part of the entire world.

I think you should check out the giants causeway, while you're in Northern Ireland.
The difference between England and Northern Ireland?
I was going to say "taking the piss out of the English", but you can do that in England too.
Taking the piss out of the English seems to be a pastime no matter where in the world you are - but especially in England 😂

Differences between NI and England - from an English perspective:
- Much more religious in NI (perhaps more like the USA outside the big cities). A lot of both Catholics and Protestants go to church as a matter of course, which is a very minority habit in England.
- Socially conservative (again, like the US Midwest?). It's like England 40 years ago, in both good and bad ways.
- *Very* friendly, even more so than northern England. And hospitable: try getting out of a NI home without being fed within an inch of your life - it can't be done.
- White. No big BAME communities (very different from English and Scottish cities).
- Perhaps not quite as tolerant of having the mickey taken as the English, probably because of some historical sensitivity.
Have fun over there, you'll like the people a lot. I may be biased because I have family connections (my brother got married in Portrush), but you will be treated very well.
I have never been to Northern Ireland, but I have worked with people from there who came to England in the early 1970s to get away from the troubles. They were as you say, very friendly.

What a great video. A real gem. First of all, as someone who has been living in lockdown since March, there was a real sense of the excitement and freedom of being able to just go out and wander the streets. Second, Port Rush looked beautiful. I've never been there - and now I want to go!

Well, that was absolutely lovely. It's so good to see you out and about! A couple of things I noticed about the breakfast: N Ireland has soda bread as part of their traditional platter. The English one would usually have fried mushrooms, and black pudding, which yours was missing. Please do more of these - really liked it!

Also, just a suggestion, but considering where you are on the North Coast of the island I'm pretty sure it would be fairly easy for you to hop on a ferry and go across to Stranraer in Scotland, if you fancy a little bit of different British culture. If you look at your map it's fairly close, you can probably do it as a day trip. Larne would be your closest port.

Portrush In the height of summer is totally awesome. Packed full of holiday makers when weather is good. An Ulster Fry is hard to beat too. I live 3 miles from the area.sadly covid has decimated many small towns like this, we hope for better times ahead. Thanks for the video guys. 👍🏻
There is a small harbour up the coast called Dunseverick, quite possibly the most beautiful place in NI. Along with a coffee shop called Bothy, which is a great establishment that you'll be made more than welcome in! Kinbane Castle, Torr Head and Fair Head are also great sights on the North Coast around Ballycastle! Welcome to and enjoy NI!
There are slight differences between English breakfast, Scottish breakfast, Welsh breakfast and Irish breakfast

I live in Portrush and one of the main things about Portrush is the skateboarding scene. It's a shame there wasn't any skaters in the video but definitely come talk to us if you're in Portrush again we all love meeting new people and introducing our sport to them.

This video made me smile today! I like Portrush. It's small but has enough there to make a day or weekend at the seaside enjoyable. It's just a pity you missed the good weather. The beaches are great when the sun is out. Oh and yeah, not everywhere does good coffee. Sometimes you need to look around for that. Lol
I guess the only I'd say not to do in Northern Ireland specifically is to talk about the troubles unless someone brings it up or it's the right context. People can get really tribal over it, it's very annoying. Young people won't tend to care much or understand as we've been born post 1998, the end of The Troubles. Belfast museum has a section about The Troubles I believe if you're interested.
Reason why I say, is that once I saw an interview between an american and Liam Neeson and the interviewer brought up the Troubles as if it was some nostalgic thing and it made Liam Neeson super uncomfortable.
I will say it's rather flattering that you find Northern Irish people very friendly. But anyways sorry for making it political but have a good day and enjoy our lovely oh so sunny weather

Being from the South of Ireland I would say your fry is missing black pudding and white pudding. I would be very interested if you guys visited Belfast and did a tour of the political murals, it's part of the tourist trail in Belfast so easy to arrange.
You can get a 'Black Taxi' tour of Belfast, that will take you around the city and give you a historical a politcal guide to the troubled history of what is a great city.

if you go to portstewart strand which is a very short drive away from portrush you can go onto the beach and DRIVE on it
Welcome to NI. The Ulster Fry is famous for having soda and potato bread which no other fry up in these islands has. I could live on potato bread! Also know as 'tatty bread' it is pronounced like 'taydy' bread. Portrush is a great wee town, I spent a week in summer there as a child in the 80s. I hope you like it. In NI you need to very careful regarding politics and religion. We were killing each other over this until the late 90s and the hurt and pain is still very real. Most people over 30 will have had friends or relatives murdered, so go gently if you want to explore our recent past. If you go to Belfast take the coast road through Ballycastle, Cushendall etc and stop along the way. It is a beautiful coastline with the Giants Causeway and other great landmarks. Also visit the Castle in Carrickfergus, one of the best in the country. take care and have fun.

I’ve been going here every summer since I was a little kid and so has most other northern Irish people since Portrush is so so popular! during summer you literally cannot move through the streets or beaches because it’s so packed! Thank you for showing the division between Ireland and Northern Ireland as many people over here are fussy about that lol. We were worried that portrush wouldn’t be the same after quarantine but really it hadn’t changed, it was still our little port. Glad you enjoyed our main wee holiday spot even through our weather! 🤍

We call it an Ulster fry, the bread you had is soda bread/farl. Take a trip down to Fermanagh.
There are a lot of walking sights to see along the north coast of NI! Musenden Temple, The Giant’s Causeway and Carrick-a-reede rope bridge are all must see’s!
While in Northern Ireland you should venture to some of the smaller, more rural towns also! Try some in the heart of the country around the big lake - Lough Neagh. Fun fact: It’s the largest lake (by area) in the UK!

NI is part of the UK but it's not "British" as that word comes from Great Britain which doesn't include NI.

Awww, Portrush! Many weekends of my youth were spent there (particularly sneaking in underage to various drinking establishments!). And I loved this video! Getting to see you out and about was refreshing.
As to to the etiquette, beyond what you already know about the politics, there's nothing to mention really that I can think of.

I visited Portrush 50+ years ago...my gods its changed...a lot! However, when I visited it was hot, sunny and...shock horror probe...in the middle of a drought! Something that doesn't happen very often in Ireland (North or South). Most of the stuff you saw simply didn't exist back in the day, there was certainly no 'fun fair' or coffee shops.
Yes things are cheaper in NI, but the wages are lower so to the locals its the same kinda price as on the mainland. Also people are very friendly even when they're throwing rocks and petrol bombs at you! Of course that sort of thing doesn't happen so often nowadays. I'd be interested to know if there's still the major Protestant-Loyalist/Catholic-Republican divide as there used to be. I think Portrush is mainly a Protestant/Loyalist area but I could be wrong.
Also its nice to see more than just the top halves of you both. I was beginning to think that you'd lost your legs due to the dreaded lurgy!

Portrush has had some major infrastructure improvements in the past 24 months to the Railway station and street architecture, mainly due to the Open Golf Championship which was staged in 2019. But all coastal towns in Ireland now appeal to the weekend market throughout Autumn/Winter much more so than the past due to cheap accommodation,aiR B&B and social media exposure
I've been visiting Portrush at least once a month since I was born and I just think there isn't a nicer place in the universe than the North Coast. White Park Bay is my fave beach. On a warm day the sun just hits it perfectly and the water is so blue. I recommend taking a day, packing a picnic and walking from Portballintrae to the Giant's Causeway via Runkerry. There is a little cheese toastie van called Mini Maegden just outside the Giant's Causeway. I recommend their campfire hot chocolates. Then walk Giant's Causeway to Dunseverick Castle. Then Dunseverick Castle to the Harbour and then onto Portbradden and White Park Bay. There is a lovely little coffee shop called the Bothy at whitepark Bay. They serve the best cinnamon rolls in the world and their pizza is fab too. It's a long walk but definitely worth spending a day or 2 doing and there are many bus stops along the way if you'd prefer to skip parts of the walk and take the bus instead. The Tides is great for food in Portrush. You get 3 courses for the price of your main and you can book it online. Hope you're enjoying your trip and coping OK with the weather! The only thing I can add about etiquette is that people generally like it if you say hello while walking past them in public and say thanks as you walk out of coffee shops to the waitresses etc. I'm so glad you find us a friendly place :) thanks for the video

Welcome to Ireland... hope you have a great time. Few tips:
1) While many people think the 'Troubles' were a religious conflict, they weren't, its just that Catholic and Protestant have become shorthand for Nationalist and Unionist and a rake of other cultural aspects. Has damn all to do with actual religion. Only place in the world where the question 'Are you a catholic or a protestant atheist?' would make sense. Having said that religion and politics generally are topics you should steer away from.
2) Be wary of terms like 'British Isles' or referring to Britain as 'The Mainland' as that will rub alot of people the wrong way. Generally here people would just say 'Britain and Ireland' or 'These Islands'. As well for convoluted historical and political reasons 'Southern Ireland' is also a term that could rub some the wrong way,, just call it the Republic of Ireland, or the Republic for short. (You won't get into any trouble if you break this advice, but you might find yourself getting corrected, or silently judged...haha)
As a Protestant agnostic republican it gets confusing lol

Wandering Ravens Unless you’re unlucky enough to run into a proper melter Northern Ireland will be fine. Ulster is a politically loaded term - Unionists and Loyalists will refer to NI as Ulster, but Nationalists and Republicans won’t as three counties of the province of Ulster are in the Republic.
Wandering Ravens saying “ulster” is close enough and acceptable. It’s the one of the 4 provinces of Ireland that has the 6 counties in Northern Ireland as well as three from the republic.
Not a British place, but just over the Ireland border is a town called Carlingford. Great place!

My northern Irish friends are a big fan of bake trays. I’m not sure if they’re in the rest of the UK but they’re certainly not in ireland. You might wanna try one if you spot them.
Oh and Mauds café is a popular cafe in Northern Ireland. I’ve been there a couple of times and have personally been a bit disappointed but you should definitely check it out as you might enjoy it a lot more. I actually remember being disappointed with the mauds in Portrush but loved the mauds in Belfast. Oh and they have chicken tikka crepes which also aren’t common down south but they might be common in the UK I’m not sure.
Culturally, I’m sure you know about the history and the tensions that exist. But honestly the same people that were in the IRA/UVF in their youth will be so sooo welcoming and nice. An orange parade once randomly started marching through town while I was in Belfast. I decided to stay and watch which is a little boring but if you wanna get a taste of the culture I’d recommend to stay and watch.
Portstewart is nearby and has one of the best beaches I’ve ever seen. I tried surfing there and the sand was perfect for building a Donald trump statue.

@@WanderingRavens If you're lucky enough to see a launch it's quite spectacular! Also when there is a callout volunteers have to stop what they are doing and drive to the station so if you see lots of cars "hauling ass" all of a sudden you'll know why.
@@chanchito4401 The boathouse is just left of shot in the video. Unfortunately, back in the seventies, the lifeboat got much too big to actually fit in it, so now remains moored in the harbour. Launches aren't quite so spectacular nowadays.
@@marshalldonaghy4542 Damn! At least you get to see it afloat at all times rather than hidden away I suppose! I used to go and visit the lifeboat station in St. Davids Pembrokeshire (in Wales) which had a fairly big vessel inside.
Spent many holidays in "The Port" as we called it in my youth, before foreign holidays became affordable.
Loved the place (and still do, was there last weekend), it had gone badly downhill with people going overseas for holiday and of course through the last recession.
Then the Golf Open came and all of a sudden in it is in rebuild mode 😁
Sadly Barry's was to be sold or closed this year but a buy out was on the cards, hopefully Covid hasn't knocked that on the head.

You're going to get used to the weather don't' worry ahaha. it's typical Irish weather. While you're staying in Northern Ireland, I recommend learning about history first. The reason being is because it's so recent and I think you would find it interesting. I also think it would be great because Northern Ireland is probably one of the most divided places in Europe. You get a completely different feel, different culture going from one British Protestant town to an Irish Catholic town. And these towns could only be 15 minutes apart. For example, for me, I live in an Irish catholic town so there are Irish flags everywhere, the Irish language is on shops, Irish schools, Irish sports, people, names, everything. But if you went to a protestant town everything is completely different. Enjoy your stay in Northern Ireland!

Sorry, forgot to mention, these exploration vids are great...they also bring back childhood memories for me coz I usually find I've been to a lot of the same places. Some one mentioned York, which I highly recommend. In NI I's suggest visiting Derry (Londonderry) and take a walk along the city walls.

If you are looking at costs of meals, head north of England. Lower prices, better potions. I'm in Yorkshire and having been south, everything shrinks and increases in price as you go south😉 If you have been based in the south east or midlands, you will notice a larger price for smaller portions
I would suggest getting a proper Guinness while in Northern Ireland. They are different when you travel away from ireland

And you need to be swimming in that water to earn your breakfast. I love a good Ulster fry and some wheaten bread. We can't get wheaten bread here but it's my favourite bread.
Try the Harbour Bar on Kerr St, when they're open, down by the harbour. Great food, great drink, great hosts, great craic.

I am have an american accent now and I come from Portrush (approximately) and lived in portrush for 4 years ... what I think you missed is finding out about the North West 200 and the Open golf championship at Royal Portrush. Glad you did not find a Starbucks.
There are still some problems between sections of the population in Northern Ireland but the Irish have never really included others in their "family" squabbles (with exception of English). They are some of the friendliest people around.
Great video, apart from the cold - frys are great for a hangover. Worth checking out Port Stewart and Dunluce Castle nearby. If you're a fan of ice cream find a mauds or morelli's they also tend to do good coffee. The Derry city, titanic centre and Carrickfergus Castle also tend to be hits with American tourists. Although not common people are used to US accents with a lot of tourists and university students (Portrush & Portstewart are both university towns with nearby Coleraine campus). And of course have a Guinness.. enjoy your stay !
