I have no clue if this is gonna be a series or not... would I even call this a let's play???

This is really cool! I teach Mandarin, and watching the perspective of (what I imagine to be) other students is really interesting.
Something important that you bring up is Duolingo from what I see is very good as a supplement, and should not be used as a 'silver bullet' to learn to fluency.
