154 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail (Episode 14)

- Episode 14 of my SOBO thru hike of the Pacific Crest Trail takes me across 154 miles of the high Sierra Nevada Mountains, along the John Muir Trail. There are truly no words that can do this section justice, I just hope I was able to capture some of it's beauty with my camera.
I start this episode in the Yosemite valley and take my first official steps on the John Muir trail. As I climb up into the mountains I am stunned by the beauty. I spend 9 days on this section climbing pass and after incredible pass. I also ford some rivers when I'm down in the valleys.
I am so grateful my parents decided to meet me throughout this section. It was a huge relief to see them in town after these epic days out on trail completely alone!
It is a real gift to get to share these places and memories with you! I really hope you enjoy this video as much as I do :)

Thank you for taking the time to do the “walk past” footage in particular even though it must slow you down when you know you have so many miles to get done before sunset. I hiked the JMT back in 2019 and it was the hardest and most amazing experience I've ever had. Thousand Island Lake and Mt. Banner is one of my favorite camp spots. I loved seeing your reactions to the landscape views! happy trails!

I’ve done the JMT before, and plan to do it again in August. I can’t get enough of it. I’d love to do the whole PCT, but life gets in the way, lol. Kudos on your hike, a tremendous accomplishment!

The only views I've seen that might compare to these were in the Wind River Range of the Rockies in Wyoming. I was backpacking though the same kind of high alpine terrain with scattered tarns between the passes. You just get this unique, ethereal feeling of being in a rare, special environment. And there are the marmots, which are kind of fun, too.

Great video. I always use crocs when crossing currents so my hiking shoes don’t get wet (they are also goretex, so, it would take forever to dry). Even light shoes must take some time to dry and I can’t imagine they’re confortable, so, why would you not have crossing shoes?
Impressive mileage in the Sierra! I was wondering what your thoughts were on such a late season hike. Were you worried about weather? It must have been cold at night with limited daylight hours. I will be following your footsteps SOBO 2024. I second the comment about Marie lake- a magical place.
Yay! So excited for you this season!! Worrying about how the weather would be in the Sierra was definitely on my mind a lot, but I had spoken with a few people who were really familiar with the area who told me that there usually isn't a big snow fall in October, even if it does snow. When going SOBO by the time you hit them you are just in really great shape and I was honestly very amazed at how fast I got through them. I actually LOVED hiking them in October. The snow pack from the previous season had melted even more, the trail was quiet so I had most camp spots to myself, and the fall colours were stunning! I just woke up really early to maximize my hiking daylight hours. And yes it was cold at night, you'll definitely want a warmer sleeping bag or quilt. But, it also stays that cold at night for most of the rest of the trail in the desert, so you'd probably want a warmer set up anyway! I switched out my sleeping bag in September. Happy Trails!

I enjoy your videos, however, I was looking forward to the Sierras episode in particular since I did the JMT in 2022. I felt somehow you missed to show the beauty of it. For example, you barely showed Thousand Island Lake and didn’t describe too much the land you were crossing. You only referred to the passes as such, just passes. You never mentioned them by name such as Mather, Glenn Pass or any other. I noticed, understandably though, that you were more focused in completing a lot of daily miles but that always comes at a price in terms of registering the beauty of it. I do appreciate the fact that you post dates, nobody else does that. And I think is crucial because even though every year the snowpack is different, the weather is not so I was able to tell how cold was the JMT in October or how much daylight you had. Oh and good for you that you had your parents support and didn’t have to hitch or walk roads. With that being said, this luxury could have afforded you more time on the trail. Still, very enjoyable.

Another great video, love watching every week❤. When you pass through the water, do you wear sandals or keep your hiking shoes on? If your shoes and feet are wet, how to you prevent blisters?
So glad you're enjoying them!! I wear my hiking shoes when I pass through water. If it's really shallow and gentle looking I might switch to sandals, but if there's any risk I keep my hiking shoes on because they have better grip on the rocks. This is one of the main reasons I use shoes instead of boots, because as soon as I start hiking again they start drying out. It usually takes a half day of hiking in the sun for them to dry out. I'll usually switch my socks every break and then hang the other pair on the outside of my pack to dry. I don't develop any blisters!
