    This time we continue exploring the Delta, heading towards Georgiana Slough. We anchor close to Walnut Grove, where we learn a little about Sacramento Delta history, get to stretch our legs as part of our Sacramento Delta tour. We spend a night in the anchorage before heading to the Sacramento River to our next destination: Decker Island. We have an early morning when we start dragging anchor in the Sacramento River, and begin our upwind bash back to the bay. Fathom the boat cat gets her first taste of upwind sailing, and she does pretty great for a new boat kitty. This trip was not much sailing in the delta, but we did find the best anchorages in the Delta! Of course, all good things have to come to an end, but we had an absolutely amazing delta boating adventure, and cannot wait to return and repeat our river expedition next season!
    It's a good one jam packed with adventure!

    Great video! I've been a land lubber for ten years, but kept my last couple boats at Oxbow Marina that you went by. Have been up and down Georgiana Slough many many times. Loved jumping into the water on a hot summer day.

      Thanks! We did 3 summer trips to the delta, it’s such a magical place! We always got a kick out of the faces from passing cars and small fishing boats seeing us in our heavy cruising boat sailing up those windy sloughs! If you stay long enough, the free bottom cleaning is awesome too..

    Decker Island (Horseshoe Bend)... We had our very first anchor out there and it was the advanced class. Current held the boat 90 degrees to the wind and heeled the boat 10 degrees even with just the bare mast. So also the full force of the beam-to wind on the anchor! As if that weren't enough, the current reversed during the night because of tides. Good place for a new-generation anchor (reset much better) but our CQR held. We set an alarm and woke *every hour* throughout the night to check.

    I am a power boater, but my brother is a sailboater and he turned me onto your video. We keep our Sea Ray 400 at Willow Berm Marina (where you stopped to pump out). Having been on the delta for many years, we have been in every area you hit on your trip. Brave to go into Three River Reach. It used to be a much deeper channel with nice sand tidal beaches but like everything on the delta it is constantly changing due to river flows, winds, tides, and man. Next time you go to Locke, be sure to go to Al the Wops. Best burgers around and you have to try their famous appetizer of peepers and peanut butter. The Georgiana - Sac River loop is a great one. Glad you got to experience some of our typical “Delta Breeze” on the return leg. Always fun. Happy sailing and thanks for the video.

    Fun to see this perspective. I lived in Walnut Grove when I was first married. Spent tons of time paddling and fishing that slough. Also Mels Ice Cream is the best ice cream I’ve ever had!

      Thanks for sharing! We love walnut grove, such a little gem right off the river! We also love that there’s a public dock right there! I agree with the ice cream too, we got some in our insulated steel mug and took it back to the boat for dessert after pizza! Can’t wait to go back this year!
      Besides the pizza place, any restaurant you would recommend?

      Thanks so much for watching, and for creating some groovy tunes!! Love to think that it was produced on the hook, somewhere beautiful! It just adds to the sailing/adventure vibe 😎⚓️ We are doing our best to increase our video frequency to twice a month, so our next one will be out in about 2 weeks!!
      Hope to see y’all out on the deep blue one day 💕⛵️

    What a beautiful place. Didn't seem to be too many people around either. Is this in real time or was it last summer,?
    Great video guys, thanks ⛵😍

      Thanks for watching! This was last July. The delta is pretty big, so there are plenty of desolate anchorages to stay away from others. We can’t wait to go back this summer and continue exploring!

    LMAO !! The 'a little noisy road" at Georgian Slough is actually named :"Race Track Rd." !! Gotta laugh. IF you can see a road on the levy in the delta, most likely it's gonna be noisy with traffic.

    At 12:50, from Sacramento, for those watching, the San Francisco Bay gets a Direct Blast from the Pacific Ocean through the Golden Gate 1ten miles away. But Sacramento gets a gentle breeze and when it's 50 degrees and windy and foggy and COLD in Oakland, it's 90 degrees and light breezes in Sacramento, 60 miles east. And it sometimes doesn't cool off 'til midnight ! The Delta has 1,000 miles of waterway ! Great Video. You should plan a Friday Night in Old Town Sacramento including 10th and 'R' st area some time. Getting more fun all the time !

    Thanks for posting. I'm researching a possible trip to Sacramento. I'm on a 17' dinghy with no motor but I have oars. Do you think a small boat would be sailing where you were motoring? Or is it too narrow for that?

    • @TwotheHorizonSailing
      @TwotheHorizonSailing  3 роки тому +2

      Somehow my reply was never posted! We motored most of the time in our Delta trip, with only a little bit of downwind sailing when going from Benicia towards Pittsburg. It all depends on your luck with the wind angle, and which length of river you are trying to traverse. I know our friend Dan with @headwaters kayak does lots of paddling throughout the Delta, so it can be done! Good luck

      Hey Fossilfool! I know of you from freakbike building! Anyway, The entire way from Rio Vista thru Carquinez Strait and San Pablo Bay are rather notorious for being a difficult bash upwind back into the SF Bay. Slack tide is your friend, but it's far too long a distance to do all at slack, even motoring. Mornings before the wind are best and also best to plan your trip on a few of the days of the month where you won't hit strong ebb into the afternoon winds. A small sailboat would actually be better regarding tacking upwind in narrow channels with shoals, but it's probably just too much. It's basically like small craft advisory nearly every day in the summer--pretty serious stuff.

    As someone who grew up on the prairies, the idea of jumping into a slough makes me cringe a bit, but that looks a hell of a lot nicer than any slough I've seen! Also I'm jealous you had an escape from the cold! We can't wait for the temp to rise around here!

    • @TwotheHorizonSailing
      @TwotheHorizonSailing  3 роки тому +1

      Haha Yes, I try not to think about the possible grossness of the water, when its hot enough, nothing matters! San Francisco Bay is pretty much always cold, especially for swimming, so we were stoked to be in warmer waters! When do you guys start to see a little warmer weather?

    • @WaywardLifeSailing
      @WaywardLifeSailing 3 роки тому

      Two the Horizon Sailing it’s already warmed up a few degrees most days, but summer weather doesn’t usually show up until late June. Last year we only had a couple of weeks of above 30. I’m hoping this summer is nicer!

    • @TwotheHorizonSailing
      @TwotheHorizonSailing  3 роки тому +1

      Nice, well I guess it gives you some time to get to know your new boat before June when you can really enjoy her! We are hoping to be up in your neck of the woods by Summer of 2022, if you are still around we would love to buddy boat!
