It’s runs like these that affirm to me that speedrunning isn’t just a genre of gaming or a sport-like event. It’s an art form, cultivated through practice and skill.
Ikr?? Idk how many hours this guy puts into just planning the exact most efficient route to beat the game, and how many times did he fail precising his moves to not waste any seconds🤯
My playthrough of hollow knight took 69 hours because I want to go everywhere over prepared and I'm so freaking scared of bosses And also because after reaching the city of tears it took me a while to realize that now I can go wherever I want
I'm not a speedrunner myself but I knew just a little bit that might help to understand what's going on in the speed run. I'll notify what skips can't be done on the current patch and try to make it as open to everyone, so if there's anything that someone might not understand I'll try to include it. Note that I'm not the most trustworthy source and directly asking a speed runner is the best way to attain correct information. 1. Right at the start fireb0rn pauses the game and unpauses, and then opens the inventory, these tricks are used several times in the speedrun (Cannot be done after Lifeblood). When you pause and unpause you gain control to the Knight and can then move when you shouldn't be (While falling at the beginning and waking up beside the Seer). The inventory makes it so you drop much faster and you avoid the drop lag (The Knight crouches and you can't move for a while) allowing you to move much faster. The inventory is also used in other places, like after the Uumuu fight and about the same time he dies in Crossroads to perform the shade skip, so he can avoid knockback (I think not so clear on this one) and equip the SStone as early as possible. 2. In a lot of places the game forces the Knight to walk and move slower, by jumping you can avoid this movement penalty and move as fast as possible 3. Chinese is the fastest scrolling language, so runners just change their game language 4. He walks past the bench here, it saves automatically after the Shaman opens the door, you just need to rest on it for HP and to customize charms 5. When you go behind that block the hitbox for the vengeful spirit (fireball) messes up and pretty much kills the baldur really fast. This both saves soul and time (Cannot be done on the current patch) 6. The fireball keeps you in place in the air and has some knockback which moves you a little closer to the ledge 7. Nail does 5 dmg w/o upgrade and fireball does 15 base dmg. Moss Knight happens to have 50 health which is 3 fireballs and one nail hit. The nail hit is done as the Moss Knight comes out, and fireballs right afterwards 8. Zote is saved, this is very important for geo which is needed for a few stag stations and the Lumafly lantern. The lantern is needed because w/o it the Knight can't see the toll in the dark room needed to access Crystal Peak. 9. Explosion pogo, this skip is used to access the Mantis village as early as possible. You pogo on the projectile and then the explosion itself. (This skip can still be done on the current patch but is extremely difficult) 10. Gruz mother needs to be killed so you can buy the lantern from Sly and SStone from Salubra. This area is also so the runner can perform the shade skip into resting grounds to get the D. Nail and access to eastern City of Tears 11. Super slide, when you dash into a door as it closes the Knight moves much faster in the direction that you dashed in. (I don't know if you can do this on the current patch) 12. Activating levers from behind walls and platforms. What's happening is pretty clear in the video. (Cannot be done on current patch) 13. I still don't know why runners dash of the edge here, I think it's so the Seer appears earlier. (I don't know if you can do this on the current patch) 14. During the animation of the Knight getting up, you can bypass the fall speed limit. Basically the same thing as the inv drop (Cannot be done in the current patch) 15. A lot of what Fireb0rn does in the building above King station is just collecting geo 16. Leaving geo is just because it wastes some time to collect it all, you don't need it all anyway 17. Gonna be going through everything that happens in the Watcher's Tower. Opens the lever before going up the elevator so you don't have to wait for the door to open when you get back down. Opens lever underneath the platform, it's black here because he entered from the top, and not from the bottom door. Where you're supposed to enter. 18. In order to beat the game you either need Isma's Tear or Crystal heart is used in speedruns because it's a lot faster. It's used to enter Fog Canyon from Crossroads and Queens Garden Acid Skip (QGA). QGA, in particular, is very difficult and it's pretty much pixel perfect. 19. No idea why a save-quit to get to King Station wasn't used here someone can clarify if they know 20. Here is a really "easy-to-see" shot of look down. When you look down some doors and stag bells will activate faster. (I don't know if you can do this on the current patch) 21. You don't see Myla because you used the toll gate to get into Crystal Peak. If you want to get into Crystal Peak through the route that you see Myla you need Desolate Dive, and that takes to much time 22. Some cool platforming with the fireball knockback and going under the last platform to save some time 23. Yes they're baiting Uumuu to the center and the D. Nail is used to get max soul, this is because if you don't kill Uumuu in 2 cycles you can lose upwards of 30 seconds, so Fireb0rn does as much damage as possible whenever they get the chance 24. By taking damage here you can access the lever instantly. (Cannot be done on the current patch) I think when Fireb0rn gets hit here it's accidental 25. Apparently, the bench here does heal you, also by going into a dreamer's dream you get healed so a runner can afford a few hits here. 26. This is just going to kill HK as fast as possible
Wow! Thank you for taking the time to write this out and clarify all the spots that I had questions. You are too kind. I did get answers for some of this already (like why zote was saved), but did not know what was patched out and what wasn’t. That was an interesting read for sure
The reason he does not save-quit to the Kings Station bench is because killing a dreamer results in an automatic save at that dreamer location. Also nice to mention is that fireb0rn uses the tiniest details to speed up his run, like dashing into the slope in the room before the Kings Station bench, because slopes make you descend faster, like you're pulled down.
When you go into Dirtmouth the knight starts walking instead of running. That is why he jumps instead of walks through Dirtmouth. Jumping is faster than walking in Dirtmouth so it would cut off some time.
Honestly, I didn’t even know false knight skip before watching this and now I feel dumb for not noticing. It’s little things like this that really make me love the game because there is always something that you don’t notice on your first play through!
It's not that he sat at the bench--when the Snail Shaman locks you up, your respawn point changes to just within the area (so that you're forced to kill the big Baldur and can't get out by dying or reloading). I'm guessing that once you complete that little section, it changes your respawn point back to that bench.
Dont sweat it man even if this is an old video all of your hollow knight guides for the masks and soul fragments and secrets. I just finished the game last week and you were a HUGE help thx alot man :)
A lot of these skips have been patched out so unless you play on an older version you won’t be able to do some of them. For example hitting switches through the walls has been patched out I’m pretty sure
24:27 I've come back to this video 3 times now and I always find it funny when ralyea says that firborn should be making tutorials. I wouldn't have even touched Hollow Knight or any other metroidvania if it wasn't for Ralyea.
One thing to note, you cannot do any extra damage while The Hollow Knight is stabbing itself, so htting it only gives you more soul, I'm guessing he just healed to be on the safe side, since he couldn't do anything to skip that short sequence ;)
Here's a list of things that surprised me: 0:55 Landing animation cancel 1:18 Menu landing cancel? Slower than the one that used the ledge I think. 1:52 Menu fastfall, I don't know how they open the menu midair. 4:56 Way harder than it looks, I've tried 5:55 Adjusting your spacing here lets you get double hits on the baldur, but I didn't think it would oneshot 6:05 I knew about the vengeful spirit jump later but I didn't realize it was a time save here as well. 7:53 Lmao fireb0rn is awesome! Wait, it's probably for the Geo 8:13 Hitting the bug up doesn't have recoil 9:18 He didn't rest here, but it autosaves him? 11:42 Blue lake/resting grounds? Idk how he could get up past Salubra. 12:53 WHAT THE HELL? It looks like he wallclimbed onto the door but also dashed through it, maintaining the wall grab state? Does that maintain his dash momentum? 13:30 Looks like he's going to do a Shade pogo to the Blue Lake. 13:35 He can carry the menu state through death? I had no idea. 15:47 Somehow he skips the waking up animation for the Seer first meeting. 15:53 Evidently that animation has the same falling property as opening the menu. 18:20 HE'S FIGHTING WATCHER KNIGHTS NOW? 22:08 He does the same door-grab momentum thing after Gruz Mother. I guess it's just a little faster. 35:54 I think that was a mistake? He mis-timed the menu opening. 38:43 Wow. He gets hit so that he's actionable during the hollow knight roar.
4:56 is actually super easy once you practice a little bit. You do it so the edge of your nail hits it so you aren’t to close when it happens. I can do it consistently and my any% is an hour and 36 seconds lol
Pretty much. I’m not use to all the different skips and exploits. Granted most of these skips have been patched. There was no way for me to experience any of this before the video
29:08 whis is what i actually did when i was fighting uumuu i spammed shade soul and my nail level was 3 (17 dmg) also uumuu has 300 hp and shade soul does 40 dmg but i used shaman charm so my magic dmg was doubled (4 hits with shade soul + shaman charm to defeat it)
When he healed during the final boss it's because I'm pretty sure that all your damage during that stage of the fight is reduced to 1 when they are attacking themself
5:55 I actually found this really interesting when I first found it out. I don’t know what this move is called but I have done it before. Essentially for some strange reason if you hit a bug with the vengeful spirit with the left and or right edge of the camera next to an enemy hitting it with the vengeful spirit will do 2x damage. The enemy could also be off screen for it to work. If used correctly this could be very easily exploited to do much more damage than intended. I am also assuming this is a bug that will probably not be patched. I think it may have something to do with the vengeful spirit possibly disappearing off screen but I’m not an expert so I’m not sure.
So amazing how 1) Fireb0rn became such a legend after this and 2) how optimized this run has become even since this video. So much fun to watch. Man I wish I'd known about this game when it first came out... And thanks for the guides, Relyea. Helped a guy like me Embrace the Void!
It actually automatically saves you at certain benches when you walk by them; for example, it will save you at the Black Egg Temple even if you don't save at that bench
12:54 it looks like he dashes into the gate as its opening, the gate disappears a frame later and he is stuck in a wall cling state. for him to cling to the wall the game pushes him into it but since theres no wall he flies outwards. not sure but just a guess
13:47 funny thing is i actually did something similar in my second playthrough, in one of the challenge rooms in Crystal peaks (to get the pale ore at the top), you need a pogo or double jump to get up a certain spot and i ended up using my shade to get enough height to reach it...then i learned i needed the crystal heart to finish the room and i had to do the whole thing again 18:22 I also did something like that to sequence break getting into the top part of crystal peaks without the wings

I absolutely love watching these Hollow Knight speed runs. There's just so much skill involved
Daniel Staples i love the movement... so precise yet so simple
Such high level play is fun to watch
They are fast
And planning.
Got to 98% on this game in the last two days. 36 hours plus. Loved it. Seeing this was equally as impressive as it was insulting. The amount of times I died. The 1 mask anxiety. But incredible.
I once hit Hornet midair and defeated her.
Then she suddenly stood upside down lol.
Me too .
When i beat her for the 2nd time she sunk in the ground
Tapfever7 Gaming happened me too
Corné van der Spek did ya get kings brand?
the same happened to me! she then used her nail to leave also upside down
This guy defeated the whole game in the time it took me to kill false knight! I know that I sucked in my first playthrough but still, damn.
I know the feeling!
Normal people play the game for 100 hours. Guys like this play for 10,000+
I have about 120 so yeah pretty spot on
@@kulebananaman bruh I only played for 5 hours
So you didn’t finish the game?
It’s runs like these that affirm to me that speedrunning isn’t just a genre of gaming or a sport-like event.
It’s an art form, cultivated through practice and skill.
Isn't that all game genres
Ikr?? Idk how many hours this guy puts into just planning the exact most efficient route to beat the game, and how many times did he fail precising his moves to not waste any seconds🤯
And pinpoint precision
Art is creating something. I'd say it's a skill
Fireborn created a speedrun.
I once tried to get the speedrun achievement. I was a minute over the mark.
Ohh no!
I beat the game in 5 hours, 11 seconds after dying over and over to the hollow knight lol. I likely won't try again!
Ohhh no! That is sooo close
My playthrough of hollow knight took 69 hours because I want to go everywhere over prepared and I'm so freaking scared of bosses
And also because after reaching the city of tears it took me a while to realize that now I can go wherever I want
@@fiendfi7119 69 hours :)
"So I imagine he's going to go to Dirtmouth and out?"
*nods*
Yep
2. In a lot of places the game forces the Knight to walk and move slower, by jumping you can avoid this movement penalty and move as fast as possible
3. Chinese is the fastest scrolling language, so runners just change their game language
4. He walks past the bench here, it saves automatically after the Shaman opens the door, you just need to rest on it for HP and to customize charms
5. When you go behind that block the hitbox for the vengeful spirit (fireball) messes up and pretty much kills the baldur really fast. This both saves soul and time (Cannot be done on the current patch)
6. The fireball keeps you in place in the air and has some knockback which moves you a little closer to the ledge
7. Nail does 5 dmg w/o upgrade and fireball does 15 base dmg. Moss Knight happens to have 50 health which is 3 fireballs and one nail hit. The nail hit is done as the Moss Knight comes out, and fireballs right afterwards
(This skip can still be done on the current patch but is extremely difficult)
10. Gruz mother needs to be killed so you can buy the lantern from Sly and SStone from Salubra. This area is also so the runner can perform the shade skip into resting grounds to get the D. Nail and access to eastern City of Tears
11. Super slide, when you dash into a door as it closes the Knight moves much faster in the direction that you dashed in. (I don't know if you can do this on the current patch)
12. Activating levers from behind walls and platforms. What's happening is pretty clear in the video. (Cannot be done on current patch)
13. I still don't know why runners dash of the edge here, I think it's so the Seer appears earlier. (I don't know if you can do this on the current patch)
14. During the animation of the Knight getting up, you can bypass the fall speed limit. Basically the same thing as the inv drop (Cannot be done in the current patch)
15. A lot of what Fireb0rn does in the building above King station is just collecting geo
16. Leaving geo is just because it wastes some time to collect it all, you don't need it all anyway
19. No idea why a save-quit to get to King Station wasn't used here someone can clarify if they know
20. Here is a really "easy-to-see" shot of look down. When you look down some doors and stag bells will activate faster. (I don't know if you can do this on the current patch)
21. You don't see Myla because you used the toll gate to get into Crystal Peak. If you want to get into Crystal Peak through the route that you see Myla you need Desolate Dive, and that takes to much time
22. Some cool platforming with the fireball knockback and going under the last platform to save some time
23. Yes they're baiting Uumuu to the center and the D. Nail is used to get max soul, this is because if you don't kill Uumuu in 2 cycles you can lose upwards of 30 seconds, so Fireb0rn does as much damage as possible whenever they get the chance
24. By taking damage here you can access the lever instantly. (Cannot be done on the current patch) I think when Fireb0rn gets hit here it's accidental
@@lunaArtemisOld Thanks I keep forgetting you get auto-saved outside of dreamers
Makes sense
This is perfect if someone could do timestamps for all the questions that’d be even better!
"And of course he's just gonna destroy Gru's mother"
Thats all there is to it

For a minute I thought he got the world record.....
No, that would be nuts. I’ll show you how hard these skips are in a future video

Books4ever Ever mantis claw is usually around 6h-7h on first playthrough... it doesn’t matter tho, play as fast, or in this case as slow, as you want!
Hervé Labrie-Durand yea
Thank you for the kind words. And Happy to help! Did you go for a full 112% completion?
A lot of these skips have been patched out so unless you play on an older version you won’t be able to do some of them. For example hitting switches through the walls has been patched out I’m pretty sure
I am going to test them as best as I can.
Relyea Good luck with those!
@@RelyeaGaming speedrunners use a specific patch for their runs
Oh that’s interesting.
Relyea did you test them out at all? How did it go, if so?
Most don’t work on switch. Would need to down patch on PC
Interesting. Good call
You sure? I remember speeding up the fight alot hitting him while he stabbed himself. Or maybe it was I did more damage, idk.
Hard to tell
From what I can see on the wiki, it only takes 1 damage every stab, and that damage can't be stacked, they could have changed it recently though
Wow, your reaction actually made it better and more enjoyable as compared as to watching the speedrun by itself. Nice dude
thank you :-)
Here's a list of things that surprised me:
0:55 Landing animation cancel
1:18 Menu landing cancel? Slower than the one that used the ledge I think.
1:52 Menu fastfall, I don't know how they open the menu midair.
4:56 Way harder than it looks, I've tried
5:55 Adjusting your spacing here lets you get double hits on the baldur, but I didn't think it would oneshot
6:05 I knew about the vengeful spirit jump later but I didn't realize it was a time save here as well.
7:53 Lmao fireb0rn is awesome! Wait, it's probably for the Geo
8:13 Hitting the bug up doesn't have recoil
9:18 He didn't rest here, but it autosaves him?

When he healed during the final boss it's because I'm pretty sure that all your damage during that stage of the fight is reduced to 1 when they are attacking themself

Someone else did say but that’s alright! Thank you for sharing
A lot of the stuff in this run has been patched out. This run is on an older version of the game
