Extremely excited for this series. I’m a Graphic Designer by trade and education but have always had ID in the back of my mind. I’m in enough debt from school and already moving forward in my career so starting another degree is a hard ask. This content is exactly what I’m hoping for from your channel. Thanks Jimmy, keep it up!

My Minor is in Architecture, so i have a basic understanding of photoshop, rhino, 3d modeling and have always been an industrial designer at heart I am considering learning it. I started off majoring in Architecture but i struggled a lot and switched to Advertising which is my degree. But I am great at art, drawing, poportions, and I have a knack at finding ways to improve products i myself find great interest in. I've always made models and dioramas as a kid and I figured Architecture was my only option, I wish i knew about industrial design before I majored in Architecture.

I'd like to add process in industrial design, like user psychology, is something to note under the umbrella of "natural industrial designer" behavior. That facet of the process, although greatly developed in my early 20s rather than my adolescence, is what made industrial design make sense for me

Actually the skill required to become an Industrial Designer is inborn. Sign of an designer is curiosity, a very hands on person (don’t mind getting hands dirty) & most importantly is Creative & imagination. I had these since 8 years old. So don’t let school con u $130,000 for a 5 year course. To me is a wasting of time, wasting your parent $! If u don’t have these traits than don’t get con by the University, ending up working as a Property Agent or insurance salesman after graduation.

I just want to learn industrial design so I can build out my ideas. I don't want a career out of it. I would think that there would be certificates or some sort of online training that takes you from A to Z.

This is what I want too. I think it will be a very good idea to have a part-time course on industrial design, that runs in the evening or weekends. In my country, there is a diploma in industrial design that offers weekend course for two years for those who want to build their own product. They take out the complicated part e.g. car design but maintain enough basics that you can build your product e.g. bags, furniture, shoes. Of course its not enough to build a career out of it but you get all the basics and have enough knowledge to create your own product.

I've wanted to study industrial design for a while, but I'm on a good path into my marketing career and have a lot of freedom. Is it possible to be self employed with industrial design?

Yes, it is possible but the question is would you succeed and would you be doing justice to your client.

Hey Jimmy Huynh, if one does go to ID school, can you talk about accreditation and IDSA (Industrial Design Society of America)? I want more information about the importance of accreditation and that society.

Hi, checking this series more than 2 years after you start making it. I realize after the video on the year 3 skills, the next video is deleted. There are no more videos on year 4 and 5. The content probably ran into some issue, which I understand. Anyone knows what kind of content that industrial design schools typically teach in the advanced years? Is it more on presenting the idea and models to clients? internship? knowledge on protecting your design? Just want to get a direction here so I can research more. I'm 30 now and decide to chase what I want for a long time (previous career was really suffocating for me). But I'm gonna have a baby soon, so going to school full time will be out of question for awhile. Great thanks if anyone can help :)

Let me give you guys a hand from a former employer’s perspective. I allowed an hour for each interview and it was impossible to invite all candidates because there were too many so I excluded those without an ID degree from a good college. I had my favorites. I did not want engineers or marketing/sales candidates. Psychology? I didn’t waste my time (or theirs). A master’s degree also did not cause me to interview. This is just my view point and there will be interviewers who are moved by other abilities. I looked for innovative thinking because it is not easy to teach this aspect of ID. You either have great ideas or you don’t so if do, show it. Your senior year is the most important so work like your future depends on it because it does. If you are “forced” into a group project, take control as we don’t know who the “key” designer is. If it’s possible, talk the teacher out of group projects. I know they want to educate you to be able to work in a group but you have to get that job first. Frankly, group projects are a crime unless you are not qualified to be an industrial designer and must hang onto the coat tails of others. Keep in mind that this is my personal opinion and from a consulting office. Good luck to you.

Hi, I am also facing the situation in my mind, Sometimes the automotive surface designing gets my attention, also product designing is also my area of interest Because I love to solve the problems that common people face & complaint , Being a mechanical engineer I am aware of CATIA as well where BIW caught my eye, sometimes it is UI/UX for which I have conceptualized few features for few famous apps which are quite useful & I have started to learn about Industrial designing. I am very confused ,Please make a video or suggest me some key information regarding different fields & help me with getting the exact Industry knowledge.
