Lets hope they lighten it with a kickstarter. Modernising in these backwards times means castrating with euro 5 or worse. Lets end the f-ing EU and let men rule once more!
One thing I just don't understand is how in this era of space age materials and technology and engineering advancement, motorcycles still manage to keep getting heavier.
Exactly, some will blame it on regulations, but I still don't think it adds up, the new bike weighs about 7kg more, ABS might add 2kg at most, so that would mean the new euro 5 full exhaust would weigh 5kg more than the full exhaust on the old model, which already weighed 5kg, and I don't buy it that a full euro 5 exhaust for the drz would weigh 10kg, plus the new model has a slightly smaller tank, so where's the extra weight coming from?
@@benjy288yes unfortunately it's because the European regulations, they cannot have a certain power to weight ratio because bureaucrats decided what you need and what you don't.
Sounds like those motor so called updates for to deal with extra heat from running extra lean therefore all emissions updates not really for our benefit.
they haven't done much. it's a 30 year old bike with new plastics, fuel injection and a screen. the 38hp of power is underwhelming coming out of a 400 these days. the triumph 400 makes 40hp lol. the ktm which is more comparable to the drz makes 45hp. weight is low which is good but the bike has a really high seat height, i doubt many people will want such a tall bike when there will be other options that are almost as capable off road, faster and more refined on the road and have reasonable seat height.
if yall want more power and gears go get a 450RL and F off. its the first year with the fuel injection, which EVERYONE has been complaining about. take it for what it is and keep your eye out for the next couple years once they improve. true drz riders like the bike for what it is! perfect power and weight ratio while being a tank. im glad they didnt lose sight of their original body/engine designs.
I half agree with you and I guess it's okay if the price stays the same, and we can get a little extra power out of the new FI system without new issues... I did like it for being a simple/ cheap/ reliable bike (10 years ago) and I will keep my eye on it, but I just can't F off and act excited for little more than new emissions management. I definitely won't be buying or recommending the new DRZ any time soon. Go ahead and roast me but I moved on from a '04 DRZ to a '04 450-EXC and that's what I would recommend for a cheap bike (I paid about half of what I bought and sold the DRZ for and it had about half the miles and hours). 450RL is noticeably heavier and pricier... Sure old EXCs might not have the stellar reliability track record or the huge parts availability, but mine hasn't yet skipped a beat and it performs better in every way hands down and I already feel like I got my $$$ out of it if it blows up tomorrow (not too shabby for the price of a few common mods). I guess that's my long way of saying (as a long time DRZ fan) "now that the DRZ finally has some competition I can't help wanting to see Suzuki go toe to toe, or outright crushing it."
When I saw the warning at the beginning about professional riders, I expected a little bit more action. Take a page out of yamaha's book with the t7 and hire a world class rider. It seemed to work well for them.
Bad timing! Now KTM also announced the 390 smc r and the 390 adventure r. Also other manufacturers like Aprillia announced a 400 range tuono and the 400 cc market is filled with competition. They should have done this 5 years ago.
My '04 450exc was almost exactly half the price and half the miles & hours of my '04 DRZ when I upgraded 2 years ago... Double the maintenance is true, but I keep it preventative and I've had ZERO problems. Lighter, quicker, better suspension, and a 6th gear is more than worth the trade-off in my book, but I'm a 2-stroke guy so take that whichever way you want... I know Suzuki is capable of leading the dual sport sceen again and I would love to see that happen (DRZ-450🤞)
Well it seam actually heavier not lighter. Only slightly more power where mine is modded and has 45hp to the ground on a dyno. Should have listened to us all. Not one, not even some guy who knows nothing has always said we want a 6 speed transmission. That should have been a no brainer. Or at minimum should have been made into a wide ratio transmission versus its current close ratio. And not made it even taller. Now it has the tallest seat if any dual sport available today. Crazy who these guys missed all the marks. The only thing they did right was make it EFI and a Full ABS off botton. Crazy, the biggest motorcycle company of all companies would miss this by that much. Wel i will just buy a new or low mileage engine when my 2011 finally stops running. 55,000 miles and no issues yet.
This revamp was moreso to be allowed to sell it in europe via euro 5 emissions, and other countries that require abs to be standard. Id assume keeping the 5 speed was to keep the case the same reducing costs, drzs are still manufactured in japan as opposed to competition in thailand/india (crf300/klx300/ktm390)
@@benjy288I remember the exhaust (rear Muffler) of the CRF250L which had the catalytic converter inside the muffler weighted about 6kg, I know because I had one and replaced it with an FMF which weighted exactly 3kg, yes these catalytic converters can be very heavy.
I’m betting a price over 10k. If they weren’t going to redo the gearbox they should have just added EFI and called it good for similar price. The traction control and ABS are just not needed on this bike.
Gotta say I disagree about not having a tft dash. DRZs have always been simple bikes and I think having an actual screen on it would really clash with the character of the bike
If only they would have just taken the RMZ 450 and stuck in a wide ratio gearbox with lighting😁🤔😮💨 I can still dream I guess, I might need to move somewhere I can plate and Insure a Yamaha WR450 🤔🤗
@@OnlyDamp How do you know you need a sixth gear, when you don't know the character of the engine nor the transmission gear ratios, nor the final drive gear ratio?
I like the look, but as long as they keep putting on all the electronic junk (ABS, various traction control, phone screen for a dash), I'll just keep my trusty DRZ 400.
for those who feel that 6 speed is superior to 5 speed, unless if you are planning to go 140km+ it’s rather unnecessary. Bikes like this is better suited with 5 speed - with thick sprocket and larger gear ratio to transfer the power better - you have wider range of powerband. Suzuki knows what they are doing.
Certainly if this were true, for the past 20 years DRZ riders wouldn't be begging for a 6th gear. I guess it fifth were truly high enough it might be all right so I suppose we should wait and see.
No 6th gear was the main reason I sold mine. I thought the first 5 gears were pretty much geared perfectly for the power (after the common airflow/ fuel mods) so I feel like stretching them enough to make a noticable difference over 60 mph (where a 6th gear is needed) would definitely be just as noticeable (not in a good way) under that speed.
Thanks for another good video. Looks promising, and I almost can't believe it happened finally lol. But it looks like they didn't mention anything about gearing, so that's a bit concerning. I'm guessing they kept the old five-speed
bikes take many years to develop - CF 450 was shown 12 months ago, nobody moves that fast - suzuki already had this planned, same as ktm with the 390r and enduro 390r - they are not a response, they are what they are - CF just came 1st

@veljko866 it's not about cannibalism of their line up, it's spreading risk and diversifying income, their biggest ticket items are dying slowly - superbikes, income needs to be found thus the medium 450 sector gets a target, now imagine they drop their dr65o In 12 - 18 months.... Dimensionally its near identical to the current model, i think they kept the engine case the same to stay competitive on pricing. They likely changed gearing ratios as the website claims 80 mpg.
Its all good guys, looks like they put a wide ratio transmission in it. Secondary gear changes in the gearbox and also it gets a claimed 67mpg. No way it gets that fuel economy with the narrow gears. Only problem with this bike is it gained 10lbs when it should have lost 10. But cant win them all. Ill take it.
Still a 5 speed gearbox? No, this isn’t an answer to the prayers of DRZ400 riders. Also, LCD is better than color TFT, especially for the S. Visibility and durability matters more than flashiness on a dual sport.

Wait a minute. I sold these in '09 and want to like it but 16lbs heavier, probably not much more power and still a 5 speed box. They already had a decent chassis and suspension so WTF guys.
exactly what I was thinking. Heavier and no mention of an upgraded trans? Big fail IMHO
And tell me why you want 6 speed??? Find your own set up by playing with sprocket, you’ll forget the 6….25 years old bike deserves a little respect…
@@sylvainlaurence1554 Hey man I sold them in '09. I respect Suzuki I had a 550ES when they came out. Shot Suzuki video here in Seattle. -- ua-cam.com/video/vu9t9JmZh3Q/v-deo.html&t -- Why wouldn't I want 6 gears that is the question. Sure they could space out 4-5 for road work but in the end just redesign the damn gearbox. I'd take another gear instead of Titanium valves but that's just me.
@@sylvainlaurence1554 I have a converted to street legal “E” model. It desperately needs another gear. I know there are companies out there that make a wide ratio drop in gear set but it’s very expensive. Like said above, just redesign the damned gearbox! I’d happily pay a little more for it rather than having to bust it open and install aftermarket gears.
@@tomwolf125 It's just the silliest thing. What market research did they actually conduct here and what was their rationale to stay with 5?
I hope this is real for the USA. And I hope the DR650 gets a nice refresh.
Lets hope they lighten it with a kickstarter. Modernising in these backwards times means castrating with euro 5 or worse.
Lets end the f-ing EU and let men rule once more!
No price update?
The rumor about the price (almost 9000 euros), if becoming true, will kill the bike directly.
Modern exhaust systems can be shockingly heavy.

These are dual sports and supermotos, completely different than what Triumph offers. 38 hp will be modded to around 42/43 which is perfect.
And CRF for 2025 is still low powered 300...Cmon, Honda...
6 gear ?
Had enough after 2nd ad before 3rd min. # boycott advertiser's
if yall want more power and gears go get a 450RL and F off. its the first year with the fuel injection, which EVERYONE has been complaining about. take it for what it is and keep your eye out for the next couple years once they improve. true drz riders like the bike for what it is! perfect power and weight ratio while being a tank. im glad they didnt lose sight of their original body/engine designs.
This is so exciting !! I really want one .
Bad timing! Now KTM also announced the 390 smc r and the 390 adventure r. Also other manufacturers like Aprillia announced a 400 range tuono and the 400 cc market is filled with competition. They should have done this 5 years ago.
Ktms are double the price and double the maintenance
But double the fun
My '04 450exc was almost exactly half the price and half the miles & hours of my '04 DRZ when I upgraded 2 years ago... Double the maintenance is true, but I keep it preventative and I've had ZERO problems. Lighter, quicker, better suspension, and a 6th gear is more than worth the trade-off in my book, but I'm a 2-stroke guy so take that whichever way you want...
I know Suzuki is capable of leading the dual sport sceen again and I would love to see that happen (DRZ-450🤞)

@@kaptainkyle70 It is not known yet??? Or has a 5-speed box already been confirmed?
Heavier because they have to put a massive cat on it 😂😂😂
This revamp was moreso to be allowed to sell it in europe via euro 5 emissions, and other countries that require abs to be standard. Id assume keeping the 5 speed was to keep the case the same reducing costs, drzs are still manufactured in japan as opposed to competition in thailand/india (crf300/klx300/ktm390)

I’m betting a price over 10k. If they weren’t going to redo the gearbox they should have just added EFI and called it good for similar price. The traction control and ABS are just not needed on this bike.
biggest question of all do we finally get 6 speed tranny?

Gotta say I disagree about not having a tft dash. DRZs have always been simple bikes and I think having an actual screen on it would really clash with the character of the bike
Still only a 5 speed transmission??☹☹

If only they would have just taken the RMZ 450 and stuck in a wide ratio gearbox with lighting😁🤔😮💨 I can still dream I guess, I might need to move somewhere I can plate and Insure a Yamaha WR450 🤔🤗
Thanks Jesus how fast can they increase displacemet to 650?
“Seat is like a real thong that pulls right in” 😂 Yeah……nah!
The only thing they really messed up is not putting a 6th gear...
What is your argument?
@@impalaSS65 what do you mean?
People (actual owners) have been complaining about the 5 speed for the whole 20+ years they've made the DR-Z. It's very buzzy at anything over 100km
5 speed is fine as long as they revised the ratios to be muuuuch wider, and retain shortish 1st and second for technical riding.
Tell me you know nothing about motorbikes without telling me you know nothing about motorbikes 😂🤡.

We have to thank CF Moto and Royal Enfield for this.
bikes take many years to develop - CF 450 was shown 12 months ago, nobody moves that fast - suzuki already had this planned, same as ktm with the 390r and enduro 390r - they are not a response, they are what they are - CF just came 1st
@@ogasi1798 you think they would intentionaly cannibalise their flagships (in this case Vstrom 800, and adv 390 was a street bike) before CF moto swooped in? I know that all the big companies had this kind of bike in the drawer, but nobody made them make a move, that is, up until now. Wonder if Honda will finally make the 450 Dual Sport (dialed down version of the crf 450), or Yamaha make some mini tenere.
@veljko866 it's not about cannibalism of their line up, it's spreading risk and diversifying income, their biggest ticket items are dying slowly - superbikes, income needs to be found thus the medium 450 sector gets a target, now imagine they drop their dr65o In 12 - 18 months.... They still build it for the states but in carb form, a modern update like for the rest of us this will sell tens of thousands globally, easy decision really

Definitely...5 speed is disappointing...what the heck were they thinking?
Dimensionally its near identical to the current model, i think they kept the engine case the same to stay competitive on pricing. They likely changed gearing ratios as the website claims 80 mpg.
What are you saying? 38 hp can you count?
So you keep your bike stock??? 😂😂😂
India strongly needs these bikes. Would blow up the motorcycling industry here.
Still a 5 speed gearbox? No, this isn’t an answer to the prayers of DRZ400 riders. Also, LCD is better than color TFT, especially for the S. Visibility and durability matters more than flashiness on a dual sport.

Suzuki missed the mark here. It got heavier. Same hp. Same frame. Swingarm and subframe were aluminum. Power modes when peak is 38hp at the crank? They really need to drop weight, add power, and address the 5speed. I tried a lot to drop weight on my bike.
