    I think "pirated music" has largely fallen out of fashion already. Artists are so desperate that they willingly settle for the fraction of the penny streaming platforms pay you, or the laughable ad revenue from UA-cam. We are in an age of legalised piracy. I haven't heard an artist complaining about illegal downloads in a decade... but they all complain about streaming platforms not paying!!

    • @JamesHargreavesGuitar
      @JamesHargreavesGuitar  5 місяців тому +6

      Yeah, streaming is now far bigger than torrenting definitely. But I guess my point is, if streaming stopped people would go back to torrents. Streaming only happened as a concession to torrenting, but if BOTH were stopped… no streaming AND no torrenting… then bands could get paid for their music again. Realistically however, I reckon we will realistically end up with an “all of the above” scenario, in which bands that can WILL charge for their work, and ones that can’t will use streaming. But hey, I could be wrong on all counts, only time will tell

    • @bosco7837
      @bosco7837 5 місяців тому

      @@JamesHargreavesGuitar I agree that BOTH must be stopped. Streaming is the biggest threat for me, as it persuaded people that if they are paying a subscription they are not stealing (honestly, if you're paying 10 quid a month for all the music in the world, you ARE kinda stealing!). Piracy I don't see as a big issue anymore, as most people use their mobile phone to listen to music and it's mostly Spotify or UA-cam now. What I think we need is a "music education" programme for the new generations. When we were young, we had radio shows, music magazines, entire TV channels that were designed for us and guided us through a path of discovery of the music we liked. Young people nowadays have to navigate a much more fragmented music industry on their own. There's no way young kids can get anything meaningful from endless computer-generated playlists on Spotify.

    This is an amazing videos James. I'm only 16 but absolutely love music. I adore Oasis, The Smiths, Queen, Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles, Rolling Stones and hundreds more i cant name right now.
    However, I always have thought the idea of going out and having to buy your music is much more interesting than loading up spotify and listening to anything you like.
    I play in a band with a few mates but I can't lie when I say it seems near impossible to get anywhere in the music industry due to the nature of streaming. Having seeing other small bands have VERY mild success is upsetting when in fact those bands have a small but furiously passionate audience that convinves you you're witnessing the greatest thing ever.
    I've been subscribed for a while, but you never fail to amaze me James, brilliant video as always!

    Sorry James, this is NOT going to happen. You seem to be operating on the assumption that the major labels are only tolerating streaming reluctantly, but that's not true at all. It saves them immense sums on overhead and drastically reduced how much of their earnings they had to turn over to artists, since nothing is being "purchased" and the old royalty structures are no longer in play. Label earnings are now nearly at the level of their late-90s peak. They also wield immense leverage over the streaming services since they own all the music, and could always simply set up their own competing services (or threaten to). So Spotify is haemorrhaging money, but the labels and their parent companies are bringing in billions. If anything, the labels have a strong incentive to END "purchasing" of recordings, because of the attendant contracts that would cause them to have to pay out much more to artists.

It would be nice for musicians to be be able to get signed and be paid well again. I'm 42 and have been in bands since I was 16, and it's almost impossible to get discovered these days because it feels like everyone is putting out music that they produce themselves. I don't see a whole lot of relief coming down the pipe for shows. Touring is expensive right now and venues often charge hall fees for a band to sell merchandise at the venue. These hall fees can be in excess of 25% on occasion. What would bring down prices for shows (especially the larger, higher demand shows) would be better regulation on ticketing agencies and/or anti-trust laws being passed to encourage competition in the ticketing segment of the entertainment industry. Regulation would be a daunting, complicated task that would have to protect consumers while still ensuring that the ticketing agencies could make a decent profit.

    I've always maintained that pirating killed the music industry. You get what you pay for. If you make it near impossible for artists to earn a living, then they'll end up doing something else. There's virtue in paying for something, as it compensates the creator. So I think it would be very good for everyone if we started having to pay for music again. Having said that, the ever-increasing surveillance of the Internet is terrifying and a harbinger of encroaching totalitarianism. So this is very much a mixed bag.

    Interesting thought. I would agree that having an infinite choice is actually worse. I also used to buy albums back in the day and would love looking at the album artwork and liner notes etc. I knew every cymbal hit and guitar note on every album i owned. Music has become devalued these days because its free. There aren't any big music movements anymore. People have too many distractions like phones and social media etc. This generation also has a real lack of great songwriters. As a craft its hard to master and requires serious dedication. Most people just want to be "influencers" now and get free shit for making duck faces😂

    • @TapeCollageForEloise

      how do you know this generation lacks great songwriters? isn't it much more likely that the good songwriters out there just aren't getting any exposure because streaming favours untalented trust-fund kids who are already rich and can afford to game the payola system that has been foisted upon us all?

    • @bugeyedmudafuka2
      @bugeyedmudafuka2 5 місяців тому

      @@TapeCollageForEloise Possibly yes. But at the same time, if a band had a batch of songs as good as say a morning glory or a Joshua tree etc (just picking random successful albums), would they remain in obscurity for very long? I mean with how easy it is to share stuff online these days, they would blow up pretty quick. Even middle of the road pop bands had better written tunes a few years back. This sounds a bit like old man yells at cloud ha. But I'd love to hear some new really great songwriters. I'm just not sure they are out there right now.

    • @TapeCollageForEloise
      @TapeCollageForEloise 5 місяців тому

      @@bugeyedmudafuka2 Honestly as someone whose just recently released an album (not that I'd consider myself a particularly good songwriter) I don't think the idea that it's "easy to share" stuff is accurate at all. it's easy to put stuff out there but actually convincing anyone to listen to it or getting the algorithm to pick it up is a completely different matter. Social media isn't what it once was. You link to your music from a site like twitter or Instagram and your post is going straight to the bottom of the algorithm unless you already have a big fanbase who will boost it. With the cost of living it's also harder than ever for working class people to have the free time/money/support needed to make any kind of an impact. Music fandom is more fragmented than ever and we no longer have anything like the John Peel show, or even music magazines to open peoples minds to new music and help establish specific music scenes.
      Can't say I'm the biggest fan of Oasis or U2 though and my own stuff is definitely not targeted at a mainstream audience. But just finding any kind of an audience in such a landslide of material, when everyone with more money can afford to pay for bot listeners on spotify to falsely boost their profile, it just feels like fighting a losing battle. Now spotify are planning to actually make smaller artists PAY to have their music up there. Poor people have been forced out of any kind of mainstream music industry that still exists. People just mindlessly consume whatever the algorithm shoves down their throats and don't seem to have the same drive to seek out less well known artists that music fans used to possess.

    Being new to this channel, I love the artwork. Whomever it is, much praise from me! I never thought I'd see the day Donald Fagan, at 75, would be touring at all - anywhere - Walter or not, just to pay the bills. Steely Dan NEVER toured until much, much later when they needed the money. Now, Don goes it alone and adds in some old friends who need the cash as well (not the Eagles, though). Covid killed a lot of those dates, but still, they tour all summer and fall. Point being, those who made whopping sums in the 70's and 80's on royalties, cannot live on the pittance paid to them in today's music biz. I say, bring back Rock Stars! I know thete are so many great bands out there that just can't get signed or get any play. Hell, even Payola sounds attractive. Bring the music back. Real musicians, once again. As a musician myself, I cry and crave for the old days, but if they ever do bring the music back, I hope the record labels are more fair to the bands - the people who actually write and perform the music. Were I a young musician right now, I'f be thinking about that. Never sign your music away; well, maybe if you're 80, but not just starting out. There has got to be a well-needed, but more balanced change. It cannot continue as it is. I think this video is correct. Wait for it.. it's coming. And thankfully, Hollywood and the dominance of it's reach and control, are cracking as well. Bring back great movies again, too. No more men in tights! Enough!

    I agree that too much choice became a bad thing; music joined the throwaway culture. However, that's how it's always been. Something becomes a hit and there's a rush to cash in on the trend, bleeding it for every penny that can be squeezed. "Investment in new artists" generally means "Get some spotty kid(s) to sing and cavort to a throwaway tune while paying them peanuts, and shovel the cash into your own bank account". This happened from the start, but perhaps became industrialised with Stock Aitken Waterman in the 80s and continued with Boy/Girl bands in the 90s and beyond. (I mean..."Girl Power". Yeah, right!!! 5 bimbos - a blond, a brunette, a ginger (who wasn't even a real bloody ginger), an ethnic minority and...I can't remember what the last one was supposed to be - put together by a group of MEN and marketed to young girls). The question is......WHO are the real pirates? The record companies who "maximised revenue" whilst too often delivering substandard crap, or the long-suffering consumers who decided to simply share everything for free???
    AI will never get rid of file-sharing. It's not simply a question of keeping an eye on what's being downloaded - record companies have been doing that for years, and prosecuting when possible. But there are easy ways of hiding your activities (incl. downloads) on the internet. Trivially easy. And even *IF* AI is able to analyse encrypted traffic, there are many, many hackers and crackers who will find a new way around; perhaps using AI themselves to defeat AI. A new business model is needed, not a new way to plug the holes in the old one. Any lamplighters waiting for gas to make a comeback, or typewriter factory owners, or Tory politicians (haha!!) might want to recognise that their time has passed and they've gone the way of the dinosaurs. Such is life.

      I think it’s not that that kills music. After all, in the MySpace time there were bands making great music in their five or six slots. What really kills it is that when there’s exposure out in the wind to such a digree then the firework tactics and strategizing takes over. It’s important to maintain not having the audience in mind at the times and senses you should ignore it. That’s what the problem with comercialism in music is. I don’t even think it’s the money part so much as the kind of attention and bait for the money that the music is changed and adapted through.

All i see is a machine who stole millions of piece of art, vomiting it back out at you, in a sea of malformed faces and hands (eg 2:46 lobster hands --the longer you look the worse it gets). I know you're talking about AI so it fits, but please please don't make AI art a regular thing. Cheers! Again, love your stuff mate 💚

    Naive to say the least, especially in terms of where the money 'might' go - record companies will not use the money to develop new artists, that died off years ago - companies will cite how they 'can't take the risk right now, it's out of step with current taste'', ie they don't think it will sell...The problem is that record companies are owned by massive corporations, who don't care if they sell records or tins of beans - hence everything is marked & sold in 'units' - where do you think Nirvana got the title 'Radio Friendly Unit Shifter' from...? Musicians will continue to be ripped off contractually...

I discovered bands that dont really have a major promotional lift, but they are on streaming platforms. I discovered some local bands named SCAPEGRACE, The siennas. They are not signed and do well for themselves.

    No chance. First, UA-cam has replaced radio, and it's trivially easy to rip the soundtrack of a youtube video to a high quality MP3. Will bands not promote their music? Second, if AI is used to block torrents, which I agree is feasible, it can do nothing to stop point to point sharing that's encrypted. AI has the same limits on breaking encryption that anyone has. Assuming a new technology comes along that can break our current cryptographic cyphers, we will have bigger problems than music sharing as they are what currently protects online banking.

  • @inazumaajax9939

    I very much disagree with your positive take on this. For over a decade now we have all been complaining that "radio is rubbish, there's no genuine music in the charts", a return to the old way will only increase this. Record companies have learnt their lesson and are not going to take chances on bands when AI and fake manufactured musicians who will say whatever they want can exist. Our current way may be difficult but it is ultimately better for music and the individual listeners. Sure the general public may waste the entire music catalogues they've had but that's on them, they are not the people anyway that makes bands cool. The music industry becoming rich again will just put the control back into the hands of the few.

Bands like Florence and the machine were on the 6 playlist long before the likes of radio1 was playing their music. Right now English teacher are the band of the moment. 6 music plays loads of new bands. So totally disagree that radio is rubbish people's tastes are rubbish.

    You are forgetting that the AI tech that the big companies have is also in the hands of the public. And the public is always one step ahead of these slow companies. So we will probably have an open source, free music pirating AI that consistently outsmarts these big companies pathetic attempts at censorship.

    The business model of the music industry is now in reverse, there is now no filter on bad music. The old model worked, it could be slow but 99% of the best bands were eventually signed and got on totp. Streaming is a disaster because there is no filter. The only solution is to go back to the troubadour days, get out and play your music on the streets.

    There may be elements of this that may happen, but a mass migration back to physical copies isn’t going to happen, nor should it. The carbon footprint of making and shipping CDs, vinyl etc will never gain support. Also, most people haven’t got tech to play physical copies, and with people having less disposable income, I can’t see people shifting back. What I do see is streaming services getting more expensive as the pirating gets blocked. This won’t benefit new artists as people will still have access to the history of music.

I have premium 12.99 a month becuase I dont want adverts, ad block no longer works well on many streaming sites . You just got paid from me through youtube for watching this video . where's the free exactly ? This government surveillance of everything + CBDC is going to turn us into slaves like we've never seen . Hoping your going to get paid for the music you make is the biggest cope . If the songs are good enough they will make huge money it's tht simple.

    I think it’s a good thing that some bands have been able to upload their work onto YT with an add placed at the starts, whenever someone listens to their song(s) they get something for what they did. While when they were running their band they did so with the success of the fans they had, and few in number and unheard of under commercial music stuff and slugging it off in small and Jurassic park in real life like gigs in small venues. Which they made great none the less. Like the Parisians, they were and are my favourite band together with the Strokes and the Ramones, I started my band after seeing them at a supporting act for AS Dragon in 2005. All their 2010 album is sold out of new copies on amazone and only available now second hand. I started giggling againe after their 2004 EP dropped ontonYT this year, after a ten year hiatus. And in the end, they got some payment for their music.
    And if you don’t mind.
