Maureen

Maureen talks about her experiences with type 1 diabetes in the days when there were no glucose meters. She had a blood test for glucose once a year. Maureen also tells about keeping care of a glass syringe, having to boil it herself and keeping it in methylated spirits. She describes her experience of learning that she needed 1st one amputation and then a 2nd amputation and how she coped with that. She also describes the improvements in technology, especially with the development of home blood glucose meters and self-monitoring of blood glucose levels, with a dramatic improvement in ability to undertake self-care. She encourages young people to take advantage of these improvements, to help care for themselves.
