All these symptoms also fall within the autistic spectrum. I was first diagnosed with tricotillamania and OCD as a child. As an adult I was diagnosed with hoarding disorder and ADHD. These were seen as separate symptoms by endless professionals for decades until I finally found out I am on the autistic spectrum and have shown symptoms of this from age 4. Now my life makes so much sense and explains why I adopted these maladaptive behaviours all my life just to cope with the severe anxiety and trauma of not fitting into the accepted Neurotypical standard of society. I hope one day those on the autism spectrum will get recognised early in life and that our genetic differences are embraced instead of having to live our lives hiding our true selves. We all have so much to learn about human neuro diversity. Good luck to us all.
My boyfriend has ADHD and is dealing with a hoarding issue, and the things I've heard by Dr. Olivardia are so incredibly helpful, and so incredibly on target, that I can confidently say he must be one of the best resources on the subject. Thank you SO MUCH for this recording; it was fantastic! :)
I have a diagnosed Bi-polar disorder, I'm a hoarder (self-diagnosed), as do all my siblings to various degrees. I never thought about the ADHD angle, but I consider myself highly creative, and have a dozen hobbies, half pursued. This podcast was so helpful!
"A dozen hobbies half pursued" I am the same way. I have so many interests and activities I mean to focus on, but most of the stuff just sits around gathering dust. I mean well when I make a purchase, but I don't get around to using my things before I'm on to my next idea.
Just stumbled upon your page. This is really good and the doctor is very gracious and he made me chuckle with the story about the 50 year olds papers that disintegrated 😂😂😂 that would be me saving EVERY school paper of my little ones 🙋🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️. I am diagnosed with ADHD and I am “not like those people” on hoarders but I know there’s a problem. I was trying to research mantras to help me get motivated.
I do have some hoarding tendencies, but not have many OCD behavior, I have always have insomnia and I stress easily, been working with a coach, she mentioned that I seemed to have ADHD behaviors 🤔 and I do.
I live with someone with ADHD who hoards. It doesn't seem to both him at all. However, I am exhausted with constantly keeping the house clean, organized and uncluttered. I can't think with all the clutters. It's actually driving me into depression and anxiety.
.......oh my god Dr. Roberto just READ ME TO FILTH. "But then I have to go through the whole process of getting another book..." and the EXECUTIVE DRAIN..... Thank you so much for this.
Yes, I own a magical Pop-Tart which allows me to record podcast episodes. Thank you so much for putting both your time and energy in commenting on this episode. Both positive and negative comments are weighted the same by UA-cam and help more people access this episode.
I watch hoarding shows to find house cleaning motivation, LOL! I have ADHD and about 6 minutes into this podcast I felt so anxious about clutter that I folded a basket of laundry, made my bed and started another load of laundry before the video ended. I'm like Dr. Olivardia, I can't think in cluttered spaces. I call myself a minimalist, but it's because all the clutter just screams at me and I can't stand all the (visual) noise.

I have an adhd daytimer; I haven’t started using it yet. I’ve had it for awhile.
Great interview, I really enjoyed listening. Hoarding is something I've been trying really hard to tackle lately (for the first time in my life).

I completely related to this...thank you for this interview
It would be nice to be in an adhd, hoarding, ocd, autistic spectrum support group 🧐
I keep my cards. I don’t really have friends; so, when I’m feeling sentimental and wanting to feel those feelings of love and care, I have them.

My house is too little, and, I don’t have a proper place for everything.
I winder, do people use the things in their garage within a year?
Wonder
Clutter messes with my thinking too; it can be overwhelming, almost paralyzing.
