The people working in Hollywood today couldn't sell their souls to acquire the talent required to make a movie of this quality. It is sad how far our culture has fallen. This is one of the best films of all time.
You are exactly right about the demise of Hollywood, and the film industry in general. These days we churn out technically brilliant but meaningless films. We have nothing to say any more.
Yes this movie to me is a pretty much perfect example of what a good movie should be. Great storytelling, great acting, great cinematography, great writing, great music, etc. but the storytelling is really the most prominent aspect of this film. It is hard to describe but it really feels like a movie that has some sort of substance or soul to it, which is totally lacking in Hollywood today.
I was just admiring the soundtrack in this. Having watched Braveheart many times and owning that soundtrack it is obviously James Horner. The sound during scene where Wallace gets revenge for Murron's murder has many similarities to this.
4:52 when a man exacts his revenge, there are no words needed to be spoken. Simply stare into the eyes while he takes his last breath knowing that his past finally caught up with him. Accurate for the times. Not many women on the frontier, and a way to consolidate family wealth was through the practice of bridal inheritance, whether casually or formally. Love feelings notwithstanding, it wouldn't have been uncommon for a woman to marry the brother of her dead husband.
This movie is a frickin masterpiece. Used to watch this film....all....the...time, when I was younger. I also had crushes on Gabrielle Anwar, Winona Ryder as well. 😂 I always felt so bad for Ormond's character though.
Jim Harrison's Legends of the Fall was a jewel of a story - but this is one of the few instances I find the film superior to the story. It fleshes out the story and renders it far, far greater.

I swear that woman did two things the whole movie of any account. She cried and she killed herself. If she had reversed the order that family would have been spared a lot of grief.
Very underrated movie. That being said, Brad Pitt needs to either learn how to fake cry better or stop doing it. In here and in SE7EN were both just a farce.
The gun that the brother’s wife used to commit suicide wasn’t made at that time. I wish they had gotten that detail correct. It was a great movie. I took my wife to see it when we were dating. We drove 30 miles to see it but it was worth it. It was an amazing movie.
