My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a 2002 romantic comedy film directed by Joel Zwick and written by Nia Vardalos, who also stars in the film as Fotoula "Toula" Portokalos, a middle-class Greek American woman who falls in love with White Anglo-Saxon Protestant Ian Miller. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and, at the 75th Academy Awards, it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
A sleeper hit, the film became the highest-grossing romantic comedy domestically of all time, and grossed $241.4 million in North America, despite never reaching number one at the box office during its release. It was the highest-grossing film with that distinction for 14 years until the animated film Sing grossed $268 million in 2016.
The film spawned a franchise, which inspired the short-lived 2003 CBS TV series My Big Fat Greek Life, and a film sequel titled My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, which was released on March 25, 2016, by Universal Pictures. A third film, entitled My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, is currently in production at Universal Pictures' division Focus Features.

Greek Americans are like that, not Greeks born, educated and living in Greece. These people look like freaks to us, like from another planet. I was almost angry when I first watched it: it took me a very long time to accept it (actually when I met a Canadian Greek "ghetto" in Montreal). Greek women (in Greece) are very educated, they make strong careers, they do not get married easily. And Greek men LOVE the independence and the spirit of their women. Strong Greek women are ADMIRED by Greek men.

I am Armenian and all this is very relatable. Reminds me of the wonderful times when my grandparents were alive and of the family get together a and how happy and protected we children used to feel being surrounded growing up in a big family. It all has sadly changed. I have been showing this film to my son, who is about to travel to Armenia in a month and who is unfortunately growing up without his father (he passed away).

Loved this movie. My "family" couldn't be more different. An alcoholic father. A depressed, heavily medicated mother. No love. No closeness or involvement. No one there for me or my siblings. My Dad was in the military so we moved often. We were too poor to visit relatives in other states. My Dad didn't even go to either of his parents funerals. He didn't go to my highschool graduation or college graduation. Said he was too busy. Neither of my parents were ever involved with us. When I go to the 12 Steps Groups for Adult Children of Alcoholics I hear that millions of people who grew up in alcoholic families had a similar experience of no one being there for them. So we watch movies like this in wonder and amazement that people have this kind of experience.

@@megzeecreates9093 So sweet and kind of you to give a hug to the child I once was. I'm glad you felt love in your family. In my life, I became a teacher of children and now in my elder years I do a family daycare in my home. I'm surrounded with children, young moms, nursing babies, adopted dogs and cats. I live on 20 acres with 10 people who each have their own little home and we've created a multi-generational "village" of sorts. Both my parents are alive, in their 90's, divorced. My Dad remarried and became a good husband to his second wife. Both of my parent's grew up in poverty, deprivation and severe abuse. Especially my father. It's a miracle that they are both in relatively good health and financially secure. But no closeness, no togetherness. My Mom never visited me in over 40 years though she traveled the world in her retirement. I chalk it up to her early deprivation, trauma of being married to my father, and her innate personality wasn't into being a mother or wife. She was a career woman. No capacity for personal intimacy or nurturing. It is so interesting the way life unfolds.

I'm Mexican-American, and of course, this film is way too relatable. I grew up feeling weird, lonely, ugly....with no hope. When the love of my life found me, my parents made our union difficult. I tired to push this beautiful man out of my life to spare him from my family, and my low self esteem for being different---but he thought I was worth it. He never gave up on me, and now we're happy.
This film is a fun, touching reminder that I'm not alone. Blessed be all the wonderful men that love us weird, foreign women with strange, difficult families 💕

My favourite relationship in the film is Toula and her brother Nick. Louis Mandylor really displayed the love and protectiveness of a brother towards his sister and I really loved how he was always so supportive of her and Ian and encouraged her whenever she had doubts.
You can also see what a great uncle he is to Athena's boys and how he loves his father and wants his approval for his painting aspirations, but at no point does he show any bitterness towards him for being oblivious/indifferent, or envy that Toula is breaking with tradition and getting support from the family when he isn't.

Guys Toula was depressed in the beginning bc of her family. Demeaning her bc she was 30 and not married, not respecting her needs to do what she wanted with her life ( many families are like these and they Don t have a " smart " mother scheming plots to make the father turn around...demeaning her calling her old. Father disinterested in his children's interests ( Niko showing him the drawings) . It s all toxic and can lead to no good. They v only made it look funny but it s tragic how they r oblivious of their children s needs. And we all relate bc we most have been raised in such a toxic way.
My father would beat me and control me but ....he wanted very much to help me if he ever thought I had a problem . But I could never tell him my problems bc he never had a relationship with me, only yelled and I never trusted either of my parents with my problems.
My brother would defend me with an ex boyfriend but when parents gave him 3 times more inheritance than me, he very conveniently took it with no remorse believing he s entitled.
That kind of upbringing creates selfish beings with no empathy.
Love is to care for what ur child needs, spend time listening to your child, try to make them happy, care for what they want , not project your insecurities on them

I'm an only child and my husband from a family of 5. I met his family which are Italian at Easter 🐇 and it was almost like this movie except there were kids everywhere and card tables set up in the backyard everyone playing cards and others gathered around talking and having fun. Just like Ian said my life was boring and I came alive when we married. I'm a widow now. We were married 42 years it would be 61 this year and now its just me my oldest daughter and her sister my youngest and her husband. Everyone else has since passed away but I have my memories of all those good times. Thanks for sharing this movie. Bye from Ohio🌹

    • @shuoyang6748
      @shuoyang6748 2 місяці тому +2

Xeno, means either stranger, or foreigner, which implies that Ian is non-Greek (and Toula’s family now have become aware of the situation).
Pretty much like how laowai (or laomei), means foreigner, westerner, Yankee, or American, in Chinese, or how gaijin means foreigner in Japanese.
Their reaction to seeing someone with a partner (or spouse) who is a foreigner may likely go from shocking, to feeling embarrassed, or ashamed, especially in public, because it is unheard of in these cultures. Some might disown their children outright for simply having done so, due to cultural (or traditional) beliefs.
You would have to be fortunate enough to not let this happen.

Ah, you never know. There are a lot of stories on UA-cam of disabled people in happy marriages. What makes me feel saddest is that your mother gave you no hope. Her beliefs may have been much more disabling than ur physical disability. I hope u can get some hope somehow.

Everyone is meant for a special person in their life. I was born with a weaker arm and leg and my boyfriend accepts me for me. But I also believe in law of attraction. You keep believing in the thought you can’t have anyone because of your situation than that will stay true. You need to believe and change your beliefs. “Change your thoughts ; change your life” Famous book from Wayne Dyer

One of the reasons I love this movie so much is that it points out how self-involved modern weddings are. The wedding is for the families. The honeymoon is for the couple. Instead of just remembering a dress from her wedding day, she's going to remember all the care and kindness and love that was lavished upon her. And that is truly beautiful.

The reason it was not immediately a box office hit was because in 2002 America was still reeling from 9/11. But eventually the wonderful actors, script, and word of mouth opened people's eyes to this jewel.

Those bridesmaids dresses were horrible! 😂
Those parents might have been pushy but buying them a house is a great way to end a marriage that just started but man what a great gift if looked at it from a different perspective. Ian ciuld have been all masculine & insulted that this was his job for his new wife but it's a house!! They could live comfortably with no mortgage! What a blessing!
How awesome to have so many family members stick by each other. Nothing like mine. I know people out there might say having that big family like that is such a pain. I'm sure it is at times but for the times that it's good, it's really gotta be great!
