NASA launch voyager 1 and 2 back in 1977, their initial missions were to photograph the gas giants of our solar system, which they completed decades ago. After completing their initial missions they were steered onto a trajectory to interstellar space, meaning space beyond our solar system. Onboard both of these spacecraft NASA included information and data about humans and our planet in the hope that intelligent alien life would one day intercept it and be able to understand it.
In this video we’re going to look at the data and photos nasa hopes will one day be seen by aliens. Please do subscribe if you haven’t already, it really helps this small channel grow.
Both voyager 1 and 2 are considered to be in interstellar space now with voyager leaving our solar system in 2012 and 2 leaving in 2018. Voyager 1 was the first man made object to leave our solar system. This is the golden record attached to the voyager space craft by NASA that contains the data NASA want aliens to see, it is protected by an outer case meaning without collision it could last for thousands or even millions of years. What were seeing on the front of the record are instructions to get the data from it which look confusing even to a human. The record comes with a stylus or needle to play it, here is detailed version from NASA on what each of the instructions mean. Pause the video here if you’d like to read all of it, but effectively it explains the position the needle should be in, the speed the record should rotate along with the elevation of the needle. It also details what video signals look like on the record so the user knows when an image should be generated. The picture is made from this signal, which traces the picture as a series of vertical lines, below is a replica of the first image a user should see if the record is being played in the correct order, the first image they’ll see is just a circle.
If the user is able to understand the instructions of the record they will find on it a greeting from earth in 55 different languages. You can see and listen to all the greetings on the NASA page I’ve linked in the description but here are just a few examples of those greetings. Also on the record is several sounds that nasa calls the “sounds of earth” ranging from animals to a train and tractor. Ive linked the page that allows you listen to them all yourself if you’d like to, you’ll probably agree there are some strange choices. Particularly if the target audience is someone with no knowledge of earth.
Perhaps the most interesting thing on the records are the images nasa included. These are some of them, ranging from human anatomy and planets in our solar system to animals and humans just doing everyday things. What I think is one of the most interesting images is the one of the continents and how they move over time. This was included because an alien may not stumble across the record until millions or even billions of years into the future. By this time earths continents will have moved and look significantly different to how they do today.
With voyager 1 and 2 expected to drift through space on a trajectory without collision for millions of years do you think aliens will ever find and understand the data on the record and what would you have liked to have included on the record.

Do you think aliens will ever see the data on the record and what would you like to have included on it?

I don't think the record will be understood for what it is.

Yes, it would be extremely hard for anyone to understand, even a human
