I do think there should be a National Trust that provides at least SOME of the funding for the preservation, that helps out the people that take on these enormous and insane projects, seeing as the rules are so strict and the buildings are being preserved for future generations of Britons. Or at least organized groups of volunteers to go around to all the historic houses being preserved and help with the labour ... as part of an accreditation system/ apprenticeship program. That would be a win-win situation! (Create jobs, promote ancient skills and help everybody out).

@Mark R The laws regarding listed buildings are so strict and often so prohibitive cost-wise, that people cannot afford to do the renovations and the houses MEANT TO BENEFIT from restoration often fall apart/DON'T get renovated (BECAUSE the rules are so restrictive). The reasoning behind the strictness of the rules is that these buildings are historical and MUST BE PRESERVED AUTHENTICALLY (for 'future Britons'). Thus my suggestion that those attempting to do the work be afforded help by the very people who are setting restrictions.
(The comment wasn't about THIS specific build, but about ALL listed buildings. Not MY choice of house either).

In 2015 my motorcycle and I flew (Air Canada) to Paris and spent 70 days exploring western Europe. I included Great Britain and Ireland and made sure that I visited as many manors and castles as would fit into my schedule. I am still amazed at the number of historic building still standing and even more amazed at the documentation that still exists - treaties, wills, laws, agreements of all kinds - from centuries ago. I now appreciate the saying "While Canada has too much geography, Britain has too much history." Hang on to your history. It is so valuable in many ways.
By the way George - Nice touch with the books you present to the owners.

@@0nurbis Chances are that's how it looked when that addition was built. Considering the time and effort he's taken to maintaining all the original history and the fact that it's not painted but they used the original lime render it was probably required. He even went so far as to remove the remodel that covered that original fireplace because it wasn't original to the building.

the white wash is much better. all of that stone feels overwhelming and its so dark without the lime.

I also love old buildings. As a child we lived in a house near Braintree Essex built in 1432, the house we live in the US was built in 1793 and the building we’ll be living in in Italy was built in 800. 1200 years ago. It’s part of the town wall and was the lookout tower.

This came out awesome. With the amount of energy and history this place has seen, anyone else ever wonder if the new tenants are encountering any 'spectral' house guests?
