I feel your pain. I've dug out many such stumps and even larger over my life time. Now that I am much older, I think I will use compound leverage to do the job when I need to remove a stump. My digging years are long pass me now... But thumbs up for your efforts.

I only think I'm young. While getting the stump out I relied on many breaks. And another odd thing, I don't remember sweating as much as when I was younger (20s, 30s, 40s, 50s). Something has changed.

I just finished removing a stump twice that size. I used the sawzall at first, then the chopping ax and shovel and post hole digger (looks like a large chisel 5 feet long with mushroomed end opposite the chisel). Then brute force (my legs and back against the wall of the hole till it fell over). Then I began using the post hole digger and splitting maul (heavier, cuts w/ more force) to trim it down. After that I used a come-along to haul it out, chopped more big pieces off. Moved rocks left over from another construction into the hole, then all the dirt and that was it. Three weeks of 2 to 5 hours a day.

I had a stump 3 times that size to remove. Started to dig around it then remembered how powerful water is. Pulled out the power washer and had all the dirt around the stump gone in about 45 minutes. It was a dirty job. Pulled out the chain saw and cut it into small pieces. Hole filled in and done in about 5 hours. Have since pulled three more stumps the same way. Pressure washer removes the dirt.

One thing I noticed that would have made it easier and maybe a little quicker was the winch on the lawn tractor. I thought when you pointed it out that you were going to use it. If you could have positioned your truck in front of the tractor and used the chain to tie them together, you could have used the winch to pull the stump.

What a tiring video. I too was crazy enough when I was 31 years old to dig around and cut many roots on a 3’ diameter oak stump. After 20 or more ours of sweating profusely and several bad back aches the stump finally cam out. I swore that very day to never in my remaining lifetime would I ever do that again, and I didn’t. I suggest it is always better to pay someone to grind these stumps down especially for only $80 or $100 bucks, my back and psyche is well worth this expenditure.......and your too I’m sure.

Hi Mike. I have been researching your comment for the last month. Talking to professional loggers and tree removal guys. They are all saying the same thing. That removing a stump with a chainsaw is dangerous and they would never attempt it. The main problem seems to be kickback. If the chain hits a rock or a hard piece of log, the saw will kick back and cause massive and devastating injuries. They all say they use a stump grinder.
