What an amazing woman and so sharp and spunky for her age. When she spoke of her husband’s injury and losing her mom at a young age you could hear the pain she still carried with her. I’m sure that was a huge burden that she had to carry growing up with no mom and then having a disabled husband. I remember my mom’s stories of the war and all the suffering they endured, especially in southern Italy.

He made me use the toaster oven to save energy, so like 4 hours later our potatoes were done. But he’s right. The Great Depression lasted 12 years. Now people can’t wear a few layers of cloth over their faces for a couple years or figure out how to survive on less. It’s a shame. Our grandparents were strong and resilient!

“Minestra” in south Italy doesn’t mean “soup”. It means boiled greenery. She keeps listing wild herbs and vegetables, in fact.
And when the man explains how to get that much old, with “piano piano” he doesn’t mean “slowly”, but something like “patiently”, “little by little”, something near to “with endurance and sacrifice”.

@@strangerthings88 “Soup” is a kind of broth, mostly liquid. “Minestra” as intended in South Italy is quite never liquid. Nothing to do with.
“Slowly” doesn’t mean “little by little, patiently”. It only means not too fast. The concept is totally different.
I’m from the South of Italy, less than one hundred kilometers from there. Maybe my English is not so good, but the differences between Italian and South Italy languages is quite clear to me.

He went to jail twice because he crossed the Italian-French border to be with my grandmother, got deported, and the third time they sent him to war. Right when the axis turned on the Russian, he was caught in between. He lost 80% of his lung capacity because of combat gases and saw things he would not tell. He went on to have a happy and relatively long life with my grandma in France afterward, even if his health was not the best. "Easy" compared to what? Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.
Concettina had a good father and good husband, loving children and grandchildren, and she has her health, mind, and functioning body. They might have been poor, but they had a home and a garden, enough to eat. Not everyone is blessed with that. My now 85 years old mother has Alzheimer's, and she lost the ability to use her hands to knit and sew, which was what she loved most, when she was 65.

That's what puzzled me. Usually people who grow to such an old age are always positive, despite many negative experiences in their lives. She seems to only remember the negative things, and yet she's still so strong at 101. Makes me doubt the connection between positive outlook and a long life. Or maybe she's just an outlier.

She reminds me of a 101 year old lady I used to visit at an aged care centre before covid. She had a hard life too. She was a holocaust survivor and lost 2 girls (i think both from stillbirth). Unfortunately I wouldn't be surprised if she has passed away. I know its sad but its a part of life. Making 101/102 is fantastic!! Also the man reminds me so much of my grandfather. October will be 7 years without him.

I love her so much. She reminds me so much of the Italian mamma who has meant so much to me and my life. Peppina was also Calabrian. The translations aren’t exact. They kind of soften the things she’s saying. She’s saying life has been very hard and giving stories about it. I want to say that honestly in a time when I’m going through so much it actually gives me hope that she has survived it all even when it has been so difficult and painful. When she spoke of the pain she meant internal. She also has a joyful face. The woman speaking to her speaks with a lot of love and care. I think this series is incredible, so valuable and precious. Italy is home in my heart, and I miss it every day.

What an amazing and beautiful woman. She reminded me of my mom. My mom used to save plastic wrap and reuse it. This episode was a bit sad and a real eye opener to appreciate all that we have, especially during these trying times. Their lives were hard lived, but they’re still appreciative of what they have. The best episode so far. I love hearing about their lives as well as seeing a bit of their region. Well done!
